BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham Legion FC announced on Monday that goalkeeper Jayden Hibbert has joined the club on loan from MLS side Atlanta United FC. The move comes in the aftermath of a lower-body injury suffered by first-choice goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel in Legion FC’s last match against Indy Eleven.
Hibbert will be available for Birmingham’s match against San Antonio FC on Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, injuries are a part of our game,” said Legion FC President and General Manager Jay Heaps. “It’ll be tough with Matt out as he rehabs, but we are happy to be able to bring in someone of Jayden’s quality to play meaningful minutes.”
Hibbert, 19, was drafted by Atlanta United with the 19th overall pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft following a stellar two-years at the University of Connecticut. He signed a contract this past January with the club that will have him on the first team roster for the 2025 season.
This season with Atlanta United II in MLS Next Pro, the 6-foot-2 keeper from Teaneck, New Jersey has made five appearances with 11 goals allowed on 19 saves (63.3-percent save rate) and a 76.2-percent accurate pass rate. Hibbert made his international debut this year as well, getting capped for Jamaica in a pair of friendlies against Trinidad and Tobago back in March.
Legion FC also announced the signing of goalkeeper Owen Jack to a short-term contract, pending league and federation approval. It is the Cape Coral, Florida native’s first professional contract having started in every game in the 2023 season for the University of Vermont after a five-year career at Stetson.
