The Black and Gold will look to rebound after the weekend’s loss at San Antonio FC, while OKC visits Birmingham in search of its first win of the season. BHM fought hard for all 90-plus minutes in San Antonio, but Neco Brett’s stoppage time goal was not enough to spur Birmingham to a draw. After giving up an early goal, Legion FC grew into the game to finish with 63% possession, while creating 19 shots and 17 chances created. Brett’s goal kept his scoring streak alive, now scoring three goals in his previous three matches.
Forward Junior Flemings has also been an important figure in the Birmingham attack, using his pace to provide three key passes and four successful dribbles in the two games since his return, while also leading the team in shots with eight. Expect forwards J.J. Williams and Jaden Servania to also look dangerous in wide positions using their speed to create chances from the wing.
The return of midfielder Zach Herivaux to the lineup last week bolsters the squad even further, as he will combine with fellow midfielders Bruno Lapa and Anderson Asiedu to dictate play throughout the season. Lapa is currently tied for 5th in the USL Championship with eight created chances, while Asiedu leads his side in tackles with 13.
Legion’s powerful attack will battle it out this week against Energy captain Conor Donovan and centerback partner Mitch Osmond at the heart of a solid OKC defense. The two will attempt to utilize their height advantage going forward, as both have already scored from set pieces this season.
Meanwhile, Birmingham defenders, lead by captain Phanuel Kavita, will have to keep an eye on Bulgarian forward Villyan Bijev, who in 2016 was named to the USL Championship All-League first team and has recorded one goal and two assists so far this season. Bijev paired with Canadian midfielder Aidan Daniels has proven to be a threat for the OKC attack, with the two combining for 14 created chances through four games.
In the first-ever match between Legion FC and Energy FC, both sides have something to prove and will surely provide an entertaining 90 minutes.
Defender Alex Crognale, midfielder Mikey Lopez, and midfielder Prosper Kasim are still recovering from injuries and are listed on this week’s VIVA Health Injury Report.
