Birmingham Legion FC continues U.S Open Cup run tomorrow as they take on USL League One side South Georgia Tormenta FC in the the third round of the tournament. The match will take place at 7:00PM CT at Preston Goldfarb Field on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College. BSC students and Legion FC season ticket holders can enjoy free access to the game.
Legion FC enters the match after losing on the road to USL Championship newcomers Detroit City FC. The one-nil result somewhat stifled the Three Sparks’ attempt to return to form, as it came off the back of an emphatic 2-1 win over Hartford Athletic the weekend before. That being said, tomorrow’s Open Cup tie presents Head Coach Tommy Soehn’s side with the opportunity to get back on the winning track.
The opportunities have been there for Birmingham, as the side currently averages 14 shots per game. With the Black & Gold beating down the door, and the likes of Juan Agudelo waiting in the wings, it is only a matter of time until it busts open.
Tormenta FC, despite their USL1 status, are not a side to be taken lightly. The Ibises progressed to the third round by beating USL Championship side Charleston Battery by a scoreline of one-nil. The victory came in Charleston, a testament to the grittiness of Head Coach Ian Cameron’s side.
Former Battery forward Arthur Bosua is the focal point of the Tormenta offense – Bosua leads his side in shots to start the USL1 season, tallying six in total. It was Bosua who found the winner for Tormenta FC in Charleston, ending his former side’s Open Cup run.
Expect a hard fought contest at Birmingham-Southern College tomorrow night at 7:00 PM CT, as both sides will battle to progress to the fourth round of the United States’ oldest cup competition for soccer. Tickets and parking passes for the match are available HERE.
Following Open Cup competition, Legion FC travels to take on Loudoun United on April 24 at 3:00 PM CT, airing locally on My68 and on ESPN+. The team will then return home to Protective Stadium on Wednesday, April 27 to face off against the Charleston Battery at 7:00 PM CT. Get your tickets for the match HERE!
