MATCH INFO:
Birmingham Legion FC at Charleston Battery
Saturday, July 9
7:00pm CT Kickoff
Patriots Point Soccer Stadium – Mt. Pleasant, SC
Watch – My68 & ESPN+
Legion FC travels to Charleston to take on the Charleston Battery for the second time this season on Saturday night. The last time these two teams faced off, in April, Birmingham came out on top thanks to a brace by Prosper Kasim that ended the game 2-1 for the home side. The Three Sparks are now 4-1-1 in their last six, even with Kasim recently coming back from injury, just in time to face the Battery again.
Saturday’s match will be Legion’s third run out in eight days, so the team will have to rely on energized players such as Marlon Santos and Kasim who each only played half of Birmingham’s match against Atlanta United 2 on Wednesday. While the three goals scored by Enzo Martinez, Bruno Lapa, and Zach Herivaux against United were the club’s high-water mark in a game this season, Legion conceded three goals for just the second time this season, as well. That was the most goals conceded by the Three Sparks since their loss at Tulsa in the second game of the season back in March. The team’s focus will surely be on resolidifying their backline in order to get a win on Saturday.
Charleston come into Saturday’s match on a 4-game winless streak and will be looking for a win at home to snap into better form. CHS has never beaten Legion FC and will hope to capitalize on the visitors’ lack of rest. The Battery will lean on Augustine Williams to drive them forward on the attacking side, as he leads the club with seven goals this season. On the defensive side, Charleston have been struggling. They have conceded the third most goals in the USLC, lost their last match 2-0, and are up against a Birmingham side that has recently been getting into better offensive form. Legion has scored six in its last three matches compared to Charleston’s four in its last three.
For this week’s UAB Medicine Injury Report, defender Jake Rufe is listed as out, and defender Freddy Kleemann is out due to a torn ACL. Midfielder Mikey Lopez and Head Coach Tommy Soehn will return after missing the Atlanta game due to picking up one game suspensions via red cards last weekend at Louisville.
