The Lamar Hunt Open Cup is a knockout cup competition that includes all levels of soccer in the United States, giving semi-pro and lower division teams a chance to compete against MLS teams for a national trophy. It is the oldest ongoing national soccer tournament in U.S., dating back over a hundred years to 1913. Last year USLC side Sacramento Republic FC made it all the way to the final, defeating the LA Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City of MLS on its way there. The USL side lost 3-0 in the final to Orlando City SC.
Current Legion FC Head Coach Tommy Soehn has won five Open Cups in his career in MLS – three as a player and two as a coach.
The winner of the Open Cup wins a $300,000 prize and gets the chance to compete in the CONCACAF Champions League, an international tournament.
