Birmingham Legion FC returns to Protective Stadium on July 29 to host the Charleston Battery for the first time of the 2023 season. Donning their new “3rd Ave.” white kits, the Legionnaires are set to kick off at 6:30pm CT.
Going on three games undefeated, including two back-to-back wins against Louisville City FC and the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Legion FC will look to continue its momentum with a win against Charleston.
“It is important to beat teams ahead of you in the standings,” said Head Coach Tommy Soehn after Legion’s victory over Louisville. “So, we’ve got one more with Charleston. Charleston’s a big game, and the guys will be up for it.”
Birmingham’s win against Louisville brought the Black & Gold up to fifth in the Eastern Conference standings, and a win against Charleston (second) — depending on results — could see Legion jump to fourth place.
Matthew Corcoran and Alex Crognale made the difference last week in Kentucky, with both Legion players earning a spot on the USL Championship’s Team of the Week for their performances. Crognale’s cheeky, back-heel goal in stoppage time won the Fans’ Choice USLC Goal of the Week.
Enzo Martinez currently leads the Legionnaires in goals scored this season with eight, followed by forwards Neco Brett, Tyler Pasher and Juan Agudelo who all have scored four.
Martinez and no. 10 Prosper Kasim both have recorded a team-high five assists, tied for the second most assists by a player in the USL Championship.
Opponent Info:
Charleston Battery: 10W – 5L – 6D / 31 Goals Scored – 30 Goals Allowed / 36 Points / 2nd in USLC Eastern Conference
Charleston come into this match on a four-game unbeaten streak dating back to June 30. A win or draw in Birmingham would allow them to go unbeaten for the month of July.
The Battery has a lethal attack. Its top goalscorer, Augustine Williams, has netted nine goals this season (=4 in USL Championship) and Nicholas Markanich has scored seven. Fidel Barajas is the South Carolina side’s tactician, recording a league-high seven assists.
Despite the difference in their spots on the Eastern Conference table, Charleston and Birmingham are fairly even on team stats. Charleston has scored 31 goals compared to Legion’s 28, and the defensive stats are not far apart either. The Battery has conceded 30 goals whereas Birmingham has conceded 31.
