Birmingham Legion FC at Louisville City FC
Wednesday, June 16 – 6:30PM CT Kickoff
Lynn Family Stadium – Louisville, KY
Watch – My 68, ESPN+
Birmingham heads to Kentucky for the second time this season to take on Louisville City FC, looking to ride the wave of four straight wins. The Legion FC attack is starting to find its stride as the team has scored two goals in a game twice so far this year – its last two games. Leading goal scorer Neco Brett’s six goals in eight games is tied for first in USL Championship, and his early goal in Saturday’s win over OKC was the 50th of his career.
Brett’s two goals two games ago earned him a spot on USLC Team of the Week in week seven, and forward JJ Williams goal and assist last time out earned himself a spot on the team for week eight. The assist from Williams to Brett was the pair’s second connection in as many games, as they settle into their roles in a new formation the last few matches.
Midfielder Bruno Lapa, who is t-sixth in the USLC in shots (17) and t-fifth in chances created (15) will also look to find Brett in front of goal, while still aiming for his first goal of the season. The team as a whole is also itching for more goals, with just nine in eight games, despite being fourth in USLC with 101 shots.
Goalkeeper Matt VanOekel, who was USLC Player of the Week in Week 4 and was up for USLC Player of the Month of April/May, will lead from the back, as he has only given up six goals in eight games and is currently second in the USL Championship with 26 saves and tied for first in clean sheets with three.
LouCity comes into the match six points behind BHM in the Central Division but with two games in hand as the team has played just six times so far this season. The second game of the year for both clubs was a 1-1 draw at Lynn Family Stadium on May 8, a game in which Brett scored a second half penalty for BHM and LOU jumped up early with a 3rd minute goal from Pat McMahon via a corner kick. That first meeting was also Interim Head Coach Danny Cruz’s first game in charge of the boys in purple.
“Danny has a lot on his plate,” said Legion FC Head Coach Tommy Soehn when asked about the LouCity team. “They’ve changed personnel and formations, but that team is always about winning, and they know how to execute. It’s always hard to get a result there on the road.”
Louisville’s last time out was its most prolific of the season, beating Memphis 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd, and the attack, led by Cameron Lancaster (two goals, 14 shots), Corben Bone (one assist, 19 chances created), and Paolo DelPiccolo (one assist, two goals) aim to continue the offensive hot streak on Wednesday night.
Midfielder Prosper Kasim is out for this game with a hamstring injury but is the only Legion player on this week’s VIVA Health Injury Report.
