Player Bio
2024: In his first season in Birmingham, McCartney found a way to affect the game positively whether that was in the starting XI or off the bench. In 25 appearances in USL Championship play, McCartney finished tied for the club-lead with six assists. Of his three goals that season, none were bigger than the equalizer in an eventual 2-1 win over eventual champions Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.
PRIOR TO LEGION FC: McCartney was a part of the Philadelphia Union Academy since the beginning of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy era, recording over 72 appearances over four seasons between the U16 and U18 teams and made his USL debut for Bethlehem Steel FC in 2017. He would then rack up several accolades during a stellar collegiate career at Dartmouth starting in 2017 when he was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Best XI First Team, and All-Ivy Honorable Mention. He followed that up a season later with a All-Ivy Second Team Selection. He finished his college career at Notre Dame where he led the Irish to their first ACC Championship and earned himself ACC Championship MVP honors in 2021. McCartney was selected by the Portland Timbers with the 43rd overall pick of the 2021 MLS Super Draft. In two seasons with Timbers 2 in MLS Next Pro, McCartney scored four goals with four assists in 38 matches.
