Charlotte (NC) — The Charlotte Independence professional soccer team has signed rookie defender Clay Dimick. The hard work put into a three-month trial with the Independence contributed to the 24-year-old earning his way to the 2019 roster.
“It feels like a dream come true,” said Dimick. “This team feels like a family and I'm really close with a lot of guys on the team. They’ve pushed me to get better since I came in. Charlotte has become a home to me since I went to college in the area, so it's pretty cool to sign my first professional contract here.”
Most recently, Dimick was a standout for USL League 2 sides Charlotte Eagles and West Virginia Alliance FC. In 2018, the Atlanta native registered one goal in 14 games started for the Eagles. A two-sport athlete out of high school, Dimick played four seasons at Belmont Abbey College where he led the Crusaders in goals scored for three consecutive seasons.
“Clay has been training with us through preseason and the start of the season,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He's a very dedicated player and his persistence and willingness to work hard in training has landed him the opportunity the Independence. He can cover a number of different spots for us and he's a guy who hopes to make himself those around him, better players.”
The Independence continue in USL Championship action this Saturday, June 22nd against Louisville City FC at Slugger Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET with the official watch party hosted at Jack’s House Soccer Bar and Event Space (1523 Elizabeth Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204). The Independence will return home on Saturday, June 29th versus Memphis 901 FC. Tickets are now on sale.
