USL League One clubs will battle for “A Shot at Glory” during new and exciting in-season cup competition kicking off April 27

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One today launched the USL Jägermeister Cup, the inaugural USL League One cup competition. Jägermeister joins as the entitlement partner for the tournament, and an exclusive partner to the USL League One.

The USL Jägermeister Cup is an in-season, World Cup-style tournament that creates additional matches of consequences in the annual calendar. The tournament also includes non-traditional modifications to encourage attacking soccer, such as penalty shootouts to determine match winners during the group stage and goals scored as the first tiebreaker in the group standings.

“The inaugural USL Jägermeister Cup will provide exciting and memorable moments for player and fans, and we couldn’t be more excited to team up with Jägermeister as the title sponsor,” said USL League One President Lee O’Neill. “A unique tournament needs a unique partner, and Jägermeister’s commitment to bringing people together for a fun, communal experience matches what we’re aiming to accomplish with this in-season tournament. We can’t wait to see which USL League One club will take their shot at glory, if you will, and win the first USL Jägermeister Cup.”

The USL Jägermeister Cup’s visual identity, developed by the USL’s in-house creative team, takes its inspiration from the unique stag motif found on Jägermeister labels the world over and from the silhouette of a traditional shot glass. The design proudly expresses the sense of fun and brand relevance that is central to the cup’s ethos.

Teams and players will be highlighted throughout the tournament as they play for “A Shot at Glory,” in features like “Shot of the Game,” where fans can vote on the best goal of the matchday, and a “Round of Shots” goal compilation video. Fans will also have their own shot at glory the “Shot at Glory Bracket Challenge,” launching ahead of the first matchday.

Fans can expect to see the Jägermeister brand throughout the entire tournament in branded ball stands, specialty merchandise, in-stadium signage, LEDs and in all tournament-related social media content.

“Our partnership with the USL continues the brand’s long history with soccer,” said Charles Littlefield, CMO at Jägermeister. “We are excited to launch the Jägermeister Cup and look forward to fans responsibly enjoying ice cold shots of Jägermeister while watching the tournament with friends.”

The USL Jägermeister Cup kicks off on April 27, with dedicated matchdays integrated throughout the USL League One season. The group stage will wrap on the weekend of Aug. 31 and the cup final will be held on Sept. 28 or 29, with no other USL League One matches taking place that weekend. The group stage schedule is already set and can be found on the league website. The USL Jägermeister Cup will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 16, 2024) – The Charlotte Independence opened the 2024 campaign on Saturday evening at home against One Knoxville SC, falling 1-2 at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The Jacks are on the road next to face Vereinigung Erzgebirge in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Thursday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

After much of the first 15 minutes was played in the middle third of the pitch, the Jacks had back-to-back chances in the 17th minute. #14 Luis Alvarez curled a free kick into the penalty area, and a clearing header found #11 Tresor Mbuyu whose shot was blocked. The rebound found #27 Bachir Ndiaye who volleyed an attempt towards goal which was saved.

On the other end of the pitch, #1 Austin Pack blocked a One Knox shot on the endline with a kick save in the 26th minute.

Quick passing earned another dangerous chance for the Independence in the 35th minute, but #56 Gabriel Obertan’s shot was deflected out of bounds for a corner kick.

Halftime: Charlotte Independence 0, One Knoxville SC 0

With only their second shot on target all night, One Knox took the lead in the 51st minute with a tight-angle shot by #11 Frank Ross. 

Alvarez logged his first shot of the night in the 63rd minute with a curling effort which deflected off a defender, causing a spill by goalkeeper #1 Sean Lewis, but it was quickly cleared away by the visitors. Only two minutes later, #9 Kharlton Belmar launched a powerful shot which sailed just high of the goal.

Making a momentous occasion even more special, #17 Clay Dimick scored in the 75th minute to tie the game. Alvarez served a corner kick into the penalty area, and #3 Hugh Roberts II headed the ball towards goal. In the middle of the scramble, Dimick slotted the rebound in the back of the net.

Not long after, One Knox retook the lead with a goal by #8 Angelo Kelly Rosales in the 78th minute.

• The Charlotte Independence hosted a 10th Anniversary Kickoff as the club celebrates a decade of professional soccer in the Queen City.

Like I said, every game, every season, I just want to do what I can to help the team win. I feel like that’s what a captain does, and tonight it was scoring a goal. Ultimately we didn’t get the points, so it’s frustrating.”

“It’s early in the season so we’re going to learn from these experiences. I think just moving on, and just building on what’s going to happen next and focusing on that. I think we have a lot to learn, but we’re an experienced group and we’ll be back quickly.”

Isaac Scheer and Jack Ammann return for second year; Luiz Zerbini and Iván Bonus join for first season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 15, 2024) – The Charlotte Independence announced today the signing of four players to academy contracts for the 2024 season. Midfielder Isaac Scheer and goalkeeper Jack Ammann return for their second season with the Jacks while defender Luiz Zerbini and midfielder Iván Bonus begin their first season with the Independence.

“I am excited that we are able to continue pushing the development of our young academy players and look forward to them competing for minutes during our season,” Head Coach Mike Jeffries said. “All of them have shown a strong mentality and willingness to work and compete.”

ISAAC SCHEER, MIDFIELDER

Scheer enters his second season with the USL League One squad after a strong first year on an Academy contract. 

“Isaac has been very sharp this preseason,” Jeffries expressed. “He has fit in and competed with the roster players from day one. He is a versatile midfielder. He has an excellent soccer brain and the ability to make creative plays in the final third.”

At age 14, Scheer began training with the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club. In 2021, he was chosen for the ECNL Boys National Selection Game. Recently, Scheer captained the Charlotte Independence team that won the 2023 USL Academy League. 

“I’m thrilled to be back with the Independence for another year,” Scheer commented. “Now with a little experience, I hope I can help make an impact for the team this year.”

JACK AMMANN, GOALKEEPER

Ammann was a member of the Charlotte Independence squad which reached the first league final in club history in 2023.

“I am happy to welcome Jack back for another year as he continues to grow as a goalkeeper,” Jeffries added. “He competes well in training – showing good shot stopping ability and handling the speed of training.”

A senior at Indian Land High School in Indian Land, South Carolina, Ammann is a recent 2023 USL Academy League champion with the Charlotte Independence USL Academy squad. He also earned the Co-Golden Glove Award for the championship match. 

“I am super excited to be back with the team this year,” Ammann expressed. “With it being the 10th Anniversary of the team’s existence it’s very special for me because I remember being a little kid and coming to the games in their first year, and now 10 years later being able to be the one on the pitch is very special for me and my family.”

LUIZ ZERBINI, DEFENDER

Originally born in Boston, Massachusetts, Zerbini moved to Cape Town, South Africa, to develop with professional clubs in the area. He played semi-professionally with Hout Bay United FC’s premier team in the SAFA Second Division after stellar performances for the club’s U18 squad.

“As a center back, Luiz provides composure on the ball and a good passing range in addition to some physicality defensively,” Jeffries explained.

In August 2022, Zerbini signed a USL Academy contract with the Richmond Kickers. He remained with the Kickers for the 2023 season as well.

“I’m really excited to sign here this season,” Zervini shared. “I look forward to developing under the great coaching staff and helping the team bring trophies to Charlotte this season and beyond.”

IVÁN BONUS, MIDFIELDER

Bonus, a Charlotte local, trained with the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club growing up before joining River Plate’s academy in Argentina. In 2021, he played with the U16 team and transitioned to the U18 and U21 squads in 2022 and 2023.

“Iván is super competitive, a hard tackler, good ball winner and mobile central midfielder,” Jeffries commented. “In addition to his work rate, Iván is very tuned into the game and anticipates plays well.

“I’m looking forward to building a relationship with the team,” Bonus explained. “I’m very excited to learn from the more experienced players and of course the coaching staff. I’m very proud to be part of the Jacks’ 10th Anniversary season. I’m sure we’ll make it one to remember.”

Belmar is a former MLS Draft Pick and Grenada international player

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 13, 2024) – The Charlotte Independence announced today the signing of Kharlton Belmar for the 2024 season. Belmar, a seasoned veteran, brings experience in Major League Soccer, USL Championship, and USL League One.

“We are excited to add Kharlton Belmar to our roster,” Head Coach Mike Jeffries commented. “Kharlton adds a box presence from the wings for us – he provides pace and strength in the attack, and his movement will help unlock defenses and will help us create chances.”

The list of accolades is extensive for Belmar, the 34th pick in the 2015 MLS Draft. After being selected by the Portland Timbers, Belmar became an integral part of the Portland Timbers 2 squad, winning 2015 USL Championship Rookie of the Year. The winger played 4,000 minutes for Timbers 2, logging 15 goals and three assists.

Ahead of the 2017 season, Belmar made the move to Kansas City where he won the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with Sporting Kansas City. He also made 54 appearances for Sporting Kansas City II, formerly known as Swope Park Rangers, scoring 25 goals with 10 assists in two seasons. 

Belmar made 200 appearances in USL Championship throughout his time with Portland Timbers 2, Sporting Kansas City II, Nashville SC, Sacramento Republic, and Colorado Springs Switchbacks. In total, he scored 44 goals and logged 26 assists.

In FIFA World Cup qualifying, CONCACAF Nations League, and friendlies, Belmar has nine caps with the Grenada Men’s National Team. Belmar received his first call-up in 2021 and started on his debut. During the 2022 Nations League, he started against the United States. Most recently, he was part of the squad for the 2023 Nations League. 

Belmar joins the Independence from fellow USL League One side, the Richmond Kickers, where he scored two goals and added two assists in 21 appearances.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Independence for the 2024 season,” Belmar expressed. “It’s a group with a lot of experience, quality, and a history of winning! I am looking forward to getting the ball rolling and helping the squad bring a championship back to the city!”

Family-friendly themes for all 15 home games, plus Free Gift Friday promotions

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 12, 2024) – The Charlotte Independence announced today the club’s theme nights schedule for the 2024 season. The line up introduces new themes for all 15 home games and incorporates a new Free Gift Friday promotion.

“Our mission is to make Charlotte a better place to live through sports, and providing affordable, family-friendly entertainment for our fans is an important piece,” explained Charlotte Independence President and COO, Tim Schuldt. “From celebrating our 10th Anniversary to honoring our nation’s military and some new, fun themes for our Lil’ Jacks, we’ve planned something new and exciting happening every week at American Legion Memorial Stadium.”

The 2024 season begins with the Home Opener on Saturday, March 16 as the Charlotte Independence host a 10th Anniversary Kickoff. The club will celebrate a decade of professional soccer with recognition of iconic players across the club’s history and collectible giveaways for fans. 

Also in March, the club will host a Thirsty Thursday on March 28 with beverage specials for fans 21+.

The first-ever Pups at the Pitch Night presented by Social Pet Hotel and Daycare will be on Friday, April 12. The club will drop a customized ticket package which includes a co-branded dog bandana for all the furry friends who attend. 

New this year is Star Wars Day on Friday, May 10. Come dressed in your favorite Star Wars outfit and enjoy tributes to the epic space franchise throughout the night.

May 17 is Military Appreciation Night and Meck Dec Day presented by Accuvision Lasik. Bring your patriotic spirit as the club honors local military personnel and commemorates the city’s Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, the origin story behind the team’s name.

June features three new themes: Beach Party Night, Charlotte Sports Night, and Pickleball Night. Celebrate the start of summer with Beach Party Night on Saturday, June 1. On Friday, June 14 the Independence will invite all of the local sport teams to take part in Charlotte Sports Night. Another new activation this year is Pickleball Night on Saturday, June 29 featuring a ticket package including Charlotte Independence branded pickleball paddles.

Novant Health will present the club’s annual Christmas in July Childhood Cancer Awareness Night on July 20. Fans are encouraged to donate toys for the patients Novant Health Hemby Children’s hospital.

August presents three home games which will be Soccer is for Everyone Night on Saturday, August 3, Beat Greenville Night Rivalry Night on Saturday, August 10, and Back to School Night on Saturday, August 24.

For the single home game in September, the Independence will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Night presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. 

As the season nears a close, the Independence will hold Fan Appreciation Night and a 10th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, October 4. The final home match of the season is Breast Cancer Awareness Night presented by Novant Health on October 12.

Midfielder joined the Jacks midseason in 2023

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 7, 2024) – The Charlotte Independence announced today that midfielder Nathan Gray is returning for the 2024 season. The 16-year-old joined the Independence midseason last year as the youngest professional signing in club history.

“After a strong developmental year, Nathan rejoins us for the 2024 campaign,” Head Coach Mike Jeffries explained. “We believe Nathan has the tools and athleticism to develop into a top central midfield player; though he did not see game action in 2023, we expect him to continue his strong developmental curve this year and to contribute on the field in 2024.”

Gray originally came to the Independence following stints with the Atlanta United U16, U17, and U19 teams. The Grayson, Georgia, native scored nine goals and notched 14 assists in 2023 for Atlanta United Academy sides. Gray helped lead the U16 squad to the 2023 MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs with a first-place finish in group play during the MLS NEXT Flex Tournament. 

“I’m super excited to be back with the Independence this year,” Gray shared. “I’m looking forward to an amazing season and helping the team win the championship this year.”

Jacks add young, dynamic left back

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 6, 2024) – The Charlotte Independence announced today the signing of left back Anton Sorenson for the 2024 season. Sorenson joins the Independence from Philadelphia Union II.

“Anton is a dynamic left sided player,” Head Coach Mike Jeffries explained, “He impresses with his final third ability as well as his pace to get up and down the left side of the field. Having developed in Philadelphia, he brings strong defensive qualities to the role as well as a solid mentality. As another young addition, Anton has a significant developmental upside and competes very well within our system.”

Sorenson joined the Philadelphia Union Academy in 2019 on the U17 squad. He played for Philadelphia Union II in the USL Championship in 2020, logging over 1,000 minutes in 12 appearances. Sorenson scored his first professional goal on September 17 in the Union’s win over Loudoun United.

In January 2022, Philadelphia Union signed Sorenson to a homegrown contract with the club’s first team roster. 

As Philadelphia Union II transitioned to MLS Next Pro, Sorenson continued to be a mainstay in the matchday roster. Across the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Sorenson appeared in 45 matches, including full 90 minute performances in a pair of playoff games. 

Originally born in Haiti, Sorenson was selected for multiple US Youth National Team rosters. He received his first call-up in 2017 to a U14 training camp squad. He then earned three call-ups for the U16 side, debuting on April 24, 2018. Sorenson contributed to the 2018 U16 team that finished third in the Torneo Delle Naizoni in Italy.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 2, 2024) – First round matchups for the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer’s annual club championship, were announced today. The Charlotte Independence will travel to face Vereinigung Erzgebirge, a team out of the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania. 

The match will take place on Thursday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Cairn University in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.
