CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Friday, October 1) – The Charlotte Independence Professional Team and Youth Club announced today their 2021 “Kick the Cold” Coat Drive in partnership with Summit Coffee Co. As part of the philanthropic initiative, Winter coats will be collected and donated to three local organizations: Communities in Schools, Heal Charlotte and Crisis Assistance Ministry. 

“With all that our city, state and country have been through in the last 18 months, there are so many people in need,” stated Charlotte Independence President & COO, Tim Schuldt. “The Charlotte Independence is committed to the greater Charlotte region and we look forward to mobilizing with our fans, our youth academy and Summit Coffee Company to make a positive impact as temperatures drop this fall. We encourage everyone to donate a coat or jacket over the next 45 days so we can make a huge impact for good!"

The Charlotte Independence will collect coats at their remaining home games on Saturday, October 9, Saturday, October 16 and Wednesday, October 27. Any fan who donates a coat at American Legion Memorial Stadium upon arrival will receive free entry to the match. 

The Charlotte Independence Soccer Club (CISC) will begin collections on Monday, October 12 at three practice facilities across the greater Charlotte area: Richard Barry Park (Huntersville), Manchester Meadows (Rock Hill) and Mazeppa Park (Mooresville). Collections for the CISC will end on Monday, November 22.

HARTFORD, C.T. (September 30, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence defeated Hartford Athletic tonight by a score of 2-1 at Dillon Stadium. “We knew going in that this was playoff intensity and obviously for Hartford it was an everything game. We knew they’d come out with tons of energy, tons of intensity, and we felt like we had to match it,” stated Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries. 

The Charlotte Independence held a majority of the possession early in the match despite a quick opportunity from Hartford which forced goalkeeper, #1 Austin Pack to make a diving save and punch the ball out to safety.

The Jacks continued to apply the pressure and forced a turnover in the 13th minute. #9 Irvin Parra collected the ball and served up a cross from the right corner of the pitch. He found #19 Enzo Martinez in the box. He first attempted the back heel, but was blocked by the Hartford defender. The deflection popped up at the perfect angle for Martinez to take the volley first time, and he placed it in the back of the net. Charlotte took the early lead 1-0.

The Jacks looked dangerous again in the 27th minute after #12 Adam Armour found himself in the attacking third. He dribbled into the box and pulled a cross back for #56 Sylvain Marveaux. The shot was high. On the other end, the Independence defense came up big in the 30th minute after Hartford found their way through the back line. It was Pack who made the initial save, #22 Christian Fuchs with a partial clearance and Pack again to make the final punch up and out of the box.

In the 35th minute, #29 Dane Kelly entered the match for #9 Irvin Parra. 

Hartford had one final attempt in the 45th minute with a free kick just inside midfield. The service was sent right to the PK spot where Pack came off his line to make the easy grab. The Independence led at the half, 1-0.

The second half was full of late game drama, and it all started in the 69th minute when a strike from Hartford Athletic’s #29 Juan Carlos Obregón Jr. hit the post. Just minutes later, Hartford won themselves a free kick from the right side of the field. The service came in, and it was #4 Nicolás Cardona who got a head on it, forcing Pack to make yet another diving save.

A second free kick in the 82nd minute would not yield the same result as it was Cardona again who got the header and slipped it into the back of the net. The score was tied 1-1.

But the Charlotte Independence bounced back quickly. Just one minute later, Martinez played a cross into Kelly who headed it down and past Hartford goalkeeper #13 Jeff Cladwell. Your Jacks regained the lead and held on to secure another very important three points on the road.

“It feels really good to get back on the scoresheet and help the team get 3 points,” stated Kelly. “The goal is to keep on getting those W’s and keep climbing up in the table.”

“I felt like we actually started really well and had good possession, good control,” stated Jeffries. “Towards the end of the first half they pushed the game. I thought we were a little unfortunate on the goal that tied it 1-1, but what a great response from the guys to come down right away and get the game winning goal. It was a hell of a play from Enzo and a great finish from Dane. For us to be able to come back in this situation shows a lot of character.”

BIRMINGHAM, A.L. (September 26, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence fell 2-1 this evening at BBVA Field against Birmingham Legion FC. Your Jacks are on the road again Thursday, September 30 to face Atlantic Division opponent, Hartford Athletic. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET. Watch on ESPN+.

Possession was back and forth early with both teams stringing together passes and finding their rhythm within the match. Your Jacks got on the scoreboard first after back to back corner kicks were awarded in the 16th minute. #8 Marcelo Palomino put a service into the near post and found the head of #22 Christian Fuchs. He flicked it up and over the Birmingham Legion FC Goalkeeper, #1 Matt Van Oekel. Fuchs scored his first goal of the season and your Jacks took the early lead, 1-0.

“I’m very happy to have scored my first goal for the club,” stated Fuchs. “It’s always a special moment in a player’s career. We are on a good way. There will always be hick-ups along the road, but the most important is not to lose focus and keep pushing forward. We are looking up in the table and focusing on the games ahead. We have it in our own hands to make it into the playoffs and will try our best to achieve this goal.”

Later in the half, the Independence lost possession in the midfield which led to several passes in and around the box by the Birmingham offense. It was #1 Neco Brett who ultimately took the shot and found the lower left corner of the net. The score was tied going into halftime, 1-1.

The Charlotte Independence back line did well in the second half to hold off some early chances by Birmingham with #3 Hugh Roberts making a big tackle in the 53rd minute to break up a counter attack at the top of the box.

#32 Gabriel Obertan entered the match in the 54th minute and just ten minutes later found his first look at goal. He collected the ball inside the box and took a strike across frame, but missed just wide.

Birmingham Legion FC scored their second goal of the night in the 70th minute when #12 Eli Crognale took a chance at a shot from distance. The ball dipped over Independence Goalkeeper, #1 Austin Pack, and into the back of the net.

Your Jacks had one final look at goal in the 83rd minute off a cross from #12 Adam Armour which flew just high over the head of #29 Dane Kelly. The final score, BHM 2 – CLT 1.

“We put a lot into the game, so obviously very disappointed not to get anything out of it,” stated Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries. “We started pretty well, it was great to get the early goal, but we hurt ourselves with a mistake on the equalizing goal. I felt like it was just a really hard fought battle throughout. We had good chances, good half chances but didn’t finish. They also were able to push the game and they made a play that made the difference. I thought we pushed really hard to get back to 2-2, but we weren’t able to quite do it. So, a tough night and we have to move on to the next one.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (September 23, 2021) – Today, members from the Charlotte Independence Professional Team and the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club donated toys to the kids at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital. The toys were collected as part of the youth club’s annual Goalkeeper Wars which receives hundreds of unwrapped, new toys each year for kids in need.

(September 23, 2021) – Today, members from the Charlotte Independence Professional Team and the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club donated toys to the kids at Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital. The toys were collected as part of the youth club’s annual Goalkeeper Wars which receives hundreds of unwrapped, new toys each year for kids in need.

CHARLOTTE, NC (September 22, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence secured their fourth consecutive shutout tonight with a 2-0 win over The Miami FC. They play next at Birmingham Legion FC on Sunday, September 26. Kick off is scheduled for 5:00 PM ET. Watch on ESPN+. 

The Independence were off to a quick start when, in the first possession, #32 Gabriel Obertan took a strike from outside the box, but it soared just high over the crossbar. 

The Jacks continued to fight through the Miami defense and found the back of the net in the 11th minute when #9 Irvin Parra drove into the box. He passed to #56 Sylvain Marveaux who laid it off to Obertan for the shot which finished in the lower left side of the net. The goal was his first with the Charlotte Independence.

"It was a great moment, especially because there's been a lot going on with me flying back to France," stated Gabriel Obertan. "I've been here for a while without really being able to play, so I'm just happy I got to show what I was capable of doing and hopefully it's the first of many."

In the 39th minute #7 Joel Johnson got a breakaway on the right side of the field, but the Miami keeper came out to make the sliding save. The Independence finished the half leading 1-0. 

At the start of the second half, both teams were looking for opportunities and the play became increasingly more competitive for both sides. In the 55th minute, an opportunity for Miami came when #98 Pierre Da Silva had a left footed shot in the center of the box. He narrowly missed left. 

Johnson sent in a dangerous cross over the Miami back line in the 64th minute which was headed into the goal by the opposing player #18 Junior Palacios for an own goal. Charlotte increased the lead 2-0. 

The last 25 minutes of the game brought even more action for the Independence as they continued to create opportunities in front of the Miami net, proving to be a threat throughout the entire match. 

At the end of full time the Charlotte Independence secured the 2-0 win, their first over Miami this season. 

"It's a big win, especially for us to hold on and to finish the game out this time," stated Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries. "We'll take a lot of positives from the game. CHARLOTTE, NC (September 18, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence earned their third straight shutout tonight after a 1-0 win over Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Tonight, the club also paid tribute to the Carolina Lightnin’ and their 1981 ASL Championship which took place at American Legion Memorial Stadium exactly 40 years ago. “It was really nice seeing the group together up in the stands in the light blue color,” stated Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries about the 40th Anniversary Celebration. “I thought it was really special. The guys enjoyed wearing the uniforms and coming out and being a part of it. I thought it was a good event. Hopefully, the Lightnin’ people that came into Charlotte for the weekend enjoyed it, and I hope that we could make it special for them.” 

The first half of the match was tightly contested and chances for both teams came often. The Jacks opened the game up with a few early looks at goal. In the 3rd minute, #7 Joel Johnson had a huge cross into the box which found #56 Sylvain Marveaux, but his shot missed just left. 

Just minutes later, #19 Enzo Martinez received a ball inside the box with little pressure around. His shot missed left, but the persistent pressure continued for the Jacks as they looked very threatening in front of goal. 

In the 17th minute, #12 Adam Armour sent a perfect pass into the box for Marveaux who took the left-footed shot and sent it just wide. Then, #32 Gabriel Obertan found himself in the box with minimal pressure. His shot was tipped over the net by the Riverhounds goalkeeper, #1 Danny Vitiello.

In the 33rd minute, #1 Austin Pack made a huge save off a Pittsburgh corner kick to keep the score tied 0-0 going into halftime.

We are getting into a super busy stretch, so it’s nice to start that with 3 points.”

CHARLOTTE, NC (September 11, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence were able to gain another three points with a 2-0 win after tonight's match against Hartford Athletic at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The Charlotte Independence are back home again against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday, September 18 for the Carolina Lightnin’ 40th Anniversary and the NC Soccer Hall of Fame Introduction Ceremony presented by Complete Construction Services. The first half of the match brought a lot of excitement and the Jacks came out ready to play. The team was able to create a lot of opportunities in front of the net. In the 17th minute, a free kick into the box by #8 Marcelo Palomino initially hit off the head of #3 Hugh Roberts and then bounced over to #2 Kevin Riascos whose header just missed above the goal. 

In the 22nd minute, #19 Enzo Martinez had a great shot on the left side of the pitch that was deflected by the keeper. Palomino regained possession and sent in a rocket of a shot which resulted in a diving save by the Hartford goalie.

Hartford did not let up coming into the second half as they maintained a lot of possession, but the Jacks stayed poised. A foul gave Hartford a free kick in the 49th minute but Roberts stepped in and cleared the ball out. 

Marveaux gained his second goal of the night in the 54th minute when he earned another breakaway, then passed it over to Martinez. Martinez tapped it back to Marveaux who ripped it right past the goalie. The Jacks continued to fight the remainder of the half and the backline minimized opportunities in front of net, ending the game with the 2-0 win over Hartford. 

“This was a huge win tonight," stated Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries. "We felt good about Wednesday and coming into tonight we knew this was a big game. All these games are six-point type games, especially when you play teams that you are in direct competition with for a spot in the playoffs. It was huge, I thought the mentality from the guys was really good. I thought we were sharp from the beginning of the game and it was a good overall win.”

CHARLOTTE, NC (September 11, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence were able to gain another three points with a 2-0 win after tonight’s match against Hartford Athletic at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The Charlotte Independence are back home again against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday, September 18 for the Carolina Lightnin’ 40th Anniversary and the NC Soccer Hall of Fame Introduction Ceremony presented by Complete Construction Services. The first half of the match brought a lot of excitement and the Jacks came out ready to play. The team was able to create a lot of opportunities in front of the net. In the 17th minute, a free kick into the box by #8 Marcelo Palomino initially hit off the head of #3 Hugh Roberts and then bounced over to #2 Kevin Riascos whose header just missed above the goal. 

In the 22nd minute, #19 Enzo Martinez had a great shot on the left side of the pitch that was deflected by the keeper. Palomino regained possession and sent in a rocket of a shot which resulted in a diving save by the Hartford goalie.

It was a chippy start to the match with a lot on the line as three points would move the Jacks into the lone 4th place position in the Atlantic Division Standings. #16 Jose Bizama made his debut with Charlotte tonight and got involved early combining with #19 Enzo Martinez.

The first goal came in the 28th minute of play. It was a corner kick taken by #4 Jake Areman, which was headed back across frame by #3 Hugh Roberts and smashed into the back of the net by #9 Irvin Parra. 

#12 Adam Armour had a great look at goal in the 34th minute after some fancy footwork and a beautiful cross by #7 Joel Johnson, but his volley was blocked by Loudoun Goalkeeper #30 Noah Abrams. In the 34th minute, Loudoun midfielder #19 Landry Nanan Houssou was sent off after receiving two yellow cards forcing them to drop to ten men.

Right before the half, it was Johnson again who played a textbook cross through several Loudoun defenders and found Parra for the easy tap-in. Your Jacks lead the match at halftime by two goals to none.

“I’m just doing my job as a striker,” stated Parra when asked about his success this season in front of goal. “The team has such a positive vibe all around. We are there for each other at all times, whether we win, lose or tie. We always have each other's support to come back and grind.”

The opportunities kept coming for the Charlotte Independence in the second half. In the 49th minute, the Jacks opted for a short corner kick with a ball played on the ground to Areman. His shot was blocked and found the feet of Parra. His shot was also blocked and deflected over to #3 Hugh Roberts who was waiting at the back post to slot it in the net.

#8 Marcelo Palomino took a strike from distance in the 75th minute which bounced off the slick turf and over the hands of Abrams for goal number four. The fifth, and final, goal of the night came in the 81st minute after play developed along the right wing. The cross came in and #35 Blake Pope did well to push ball through the box and over to #10 Valentin Sabella who was trailing on the back post. He finished it with an easy pass into the open net.
