ST. PETERSBURG (May 1, 2021) – Charlotte Independence fell to the Tampa Bay Rowdies 3-0 Saturday night at Al Lang Stadium, in what was the first match for both sides in 2021 USL Championship play. The club will continue Atlantic Division play Friday, May 14 against the Charleston Battery (7:00 p.m., ESPN+).

The Independence opened its campaign without veterans Enzo Martinez and Joel Johnson, as both players missed out on the Jacks’ trip to St. Petersburg. The full Starting XI: Brandon Miller (GK), Thomas de Villardi (LWB), Kevin Riascos (CB), Hugh Roberts (CB), Christian Dean (CB), Clay Dimick (RWB), Junior Etou (CM), Brandt Bronico (CM), Jake Areman (LW), Irvin Parra (ST), Marcelo Palomino (RW).

The Independence traded early blows with the hosts, with Irvin Parra getting to the byline and finding Jake Areman in the middle of the box who’s shot was deflected and went wide. Parra had another chance a few minutes later, getting on the end of a cross on the left but only to have his shot cut out and cleared. Despite numerous first-half chances at either end, both teams went into halftime locked 0-0.

In the second half, both teams battled for the opener, but ultimately it was the hosts that grabbed the game’s first goal through a penalty kick by Sebastián Guenzatti in the 58th minute.

Trailing 1-0, Independence head coach Mike Jeffries turned to his bench, bringing on Tresor Mbuyu for Parra and Noah Paravicini for Thomas de Villardi in the 62nd minute. While the Independence found some dangerous moments in transition, the team struggled to threaten inside Tampa Bay’s box. The Rowdies didn’t back down and added to its lead in the 77th minute as Guenzatti scored his second of the evening.

The Rowdies capped the scoring – a curling a shot from inside the box past the outstretched arm of Brandon Miller in the Independence net by Leo Fernandes – in the 79th minute.

The two Atlantic Division opponents will meet again in a month as the Independence host the Rowdies on Saturday, June 5th at the Sportsplex at Matthews.

 April 29, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — The Charlotte Independence continues its youth developmental success with the signing of midfielder and Charlotte Independence Soccer Club standout Blake Pope to a USL Academy contract, pending league and federation approval. Pope will be eligible for action with the Independence as the 2021 USL Championship season kicks off for the Jacks on Saturday, May 1 vs. the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

“Blake came in with us at the start of preseason and has proved to be up to the speed of play,” said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He offers an interesting dynamic in terms of his pace and technical ability. He has a great engine, works really hard, and we think he is a guy that can compete for time on the field as the season goes on.”

Launched in 2019, Independence Soccer Club’s affiliation with the Charlotte Independence provides players a clear pathway to the highest level of professional soccer. Pope is the first Independence Soccer Club player of 2021 signed to an academy contract with the first team.

“I am very honored and excited to be able to wear this badge and represent this amazing city,” said Pope. “Ready to do what it takes to win. Super excited to learn from the staff, my new teammates and the veterans in the locker room.”

Pope currently plays for Independence Soccer Club’s U19 Pro Academy and will be joining the Charlotte 49ers men's soccer program to continue his soccer career as a student-athlete.

Eligibility in North Carolina is currently open to everyone 16 years of age and older. Independence's players will receive their second shots in three weeks.

Throughout the pandemic, Novant Health has remained an industry leader in its commitment to slowing the spread of COVID-19. Novant Health has distributed nearly 16,000 equity doses at community pop-up events where 67% of attendees identify as a member of a racial or ethnic minority. To date, Novant Health’s vaccination rate for Asian and Black patients at community events is three times that of the general North Carolina vaccination rate.

April 27, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — Charlotte Independence announced today the acquisition of midfielder Distel Zola on a season-long loan from USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive FC, pending league and federation approval.

“Distel brings a different element to our midfield which will really help us this season,” said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “We jumped at the opportunity to have him join us on loan and we feel that he will give us the ability to change the rhythm of the game in the midfield which will be a plus as the season goes on.”

The 32-year-old joins the Independence after one season with Locomotive FC – which included 11 appearances for the former Ligue 1 defensive midfielder. Prior to joining Locomotive FC, he spent the 2018-2019 season in France with Tours FC.

“I’m really happy to join this family,” said Zola. “I can already feel a good atmosphere here with my new teammates, the coaches, and the city. I can’t wait for the season to start so I can give my all and help the team in any way I can.”

Zola began his professional career with AS Monaco FC of Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, where he played from 2009-11. After leaving Monaco in 2012, Zola continued his career in the French football system, spending time with AS Nancy, Le Havre AC, LB Châteauroux.

Outside of France, Zola signed with Turkish club Samsunspor in July of 2015 where he spent two seasons and made 17 appearances across all competitions.

Zola featured for the French youth national team at the U16, U17, U18, and U19 level before switching his International allegiance to the Democratic Republic of Congo where he has appeared for the national team 21 times.

April 27, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — Charlotte Independence announced today the acquisition of midfielder Distel Zola on a season-long loan from USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive FC, pending league and federation approval.

“Distel brings a different element to our midfield which will really help us this season,” said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “We jumped at the opportunity to have him join us on loan and we feel that he will give us the ability to change the rhythm of the game in the midfield which will be a plus as the season goes on.”

The 32-year-old joins the Independence after one season with Locomotive FC – which included 11 appearances for the former Ligue 1 defensive midfielder. Prior to joining Locomotive FC, he spent the 2018-2019 season in France with Tours FC.

“I’m really happy to join this family,” said Zola. “I can already feel a good atmosphere here with my new teammates, the coaches, and the city. I can’t wait for the season to start so I can give my all and help the team in any way I can.”

Zola began his professional career with AS Monaco FC of Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, where he played from 2009-11. After leaving Monaco in 2012, Zola continued his career in the French football system, spending time with AS Nancy, Le Havre AC, LB Châteauroux.

Outside of France, Zola signed with Turkish club Samsunspor in July of 2015 where he spent two seasons and made 17 appearances across all competitions.

Zola featured for the French youth national team at the U16, U17, U18, and U19 level before switching his International allegiance to the Democratic Republic of Congo where he has appeared for the national team 21 times.

“Christian is a massive signing for us," said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries.  "A lefty who can play as a center back or left back.  A good passer from the back, Christian provides an athletic, defensive presence as well as leadership to the back line."

The 28-year-old joins the Independence after three seasons with Chicago Fire FC of MLS – which included 5 appearances for the left-footed central defender.

“I’m excited to be here and back playing the game again after taking two years off,” said Dean. “The Independence have a great locker room of players and coaches. I’m ready to get going.”

Dean was born in East Palo Alto, California and was originally drafted by Vancouver Whitecaps FC as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He made his professional debut as a second half substitute in Whitecaps FC’s 1-1 draw at Chivas USA on March 16, 2014.

Outside of MLS, Dean played 10 games in 2015 for Whitecaps FC 2 in USL Championship play, scoring one goal. He also featured for the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team, scoring a goal against Mexico's U-23 side in April 2015.

Dean played collegiately for the California Golden Bears from 2011-13, starting 55 games during his collegiate career. Dean earned All-Pac12 and NSCAA Far West Region first team honors his junior season, while also helping lead the Bears to an Elite Eight finish in the NCAA Division I Soccer tournament in 2013.

April 20, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — The Charlotte Independence announced today that they have entered into a strategic philanthropic partnership with Folds of Honor to raise scholarship funds for children of fallen or disabled military personnel, from the Charlotte region. The Independence will use various programs to raise needed funds and provide scholarships for kids that need a helping hand.

The marquee fundraising event will be a Military Appreciation Night presented by Famous Toastery (July 17 vs. New York Red Bulls II). The Jacks will wear specially designed jerseys for the first time at their new home-field, American Legion Memorial Stadium. The jerseys will be autographed by Independence players and auctioned to the public. The proceeds from the auction will be donated to Folds of Honor, who will work closely with the Independence to pick Charlotte region recipients of the scholarships.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the Charlotte Independence,” said Folds of Honor Executive Vice President for Development, Ben Leslie. “The history of their name and their new home field complement our objectives. We look forward to working with the Independence to select local applicants in need, so they can realize their educational dreams.”

In addition to the auction, Famous Toastery will feature menu items, with an Independence and Folds of Honor theme, and will donate a portion of sales to the leading, nationally recognized foundation.

“We’ve enjoyed our affiliation with the Independence and Military Appreciation Night over the last couple of seasons,” said Famous Toastery Chief Operating Officer, David Burgess. “We’re excited to take this effort to the next level as the Independence take the field at American Legion Memorial Stadium.”

April 20, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — The Charlotte Independence announced today that they have entered into a strategic philanthropic partnership with Folds of Honor to raise scholarship funds for children of fallen or disabled military personnel, from the Charlotte region. The Independence will use various programs to raise needed funds and provide scholarships for kids that need a helping hand.

The marquee fundraising event will be a Military Appreciation Night presented by Famous Toastery (July 17 vs. New York Red Bulls II). The Jacks will wear specially designed jerseys for the first time at their new home-field, American Legion Memorial Stadium. The jerseys will be autographed by Independence players and auctioned to the public. The proceeds from the auction will be donated to Folds of Honor, who will work closely with the Independence to pick Charlotte region recipients of the scholarships.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the Charlotte Independence,” said Folds of Honor Executive Vice President for Development, Ben Leslie. “The history of their name and their new home field complement our objectives. Following the announcement of the Championship’s divisional alignment in March, the top four teams from each division in the regular season will advance into a regionalized single-elimination bracket. April 19, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — Charlotte Independence announced today the signing of forward Irvin Parra for the 2021 season, pending league and federation approval.

“We are very excited to get a player of Irvin’s caliber,” said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He was one of the top scorers in the league in 2019 and he just has a knack for creating opportunities and finding the net. He’s an addition that fits in well with how we play and how we combine, and he is a player that we expect to score goals for us.”

Parra, 27, was born in Inglewood, California and came through the Pateadores youth academy before starting his professional career with FC 08 Homburg in 2012. In the 2013-2014, Parra signed with Zweibrücken of the Regionalliga Südwest – the fourth division of soccer in Germany – where he made made 30 appearances, 28 starts, and recorded six goals. That offseason, he moved to 1. FC Kaiserslautern II, of Germany’s Regionalliga Südwest. There he made 27 appearances, scoring two goals, in two seasons with Kaiserslautern II.

After six years in Germany, the forward then moved from Kaiserslautern II to USL Championship side Seattle Sounders 2 in 2016. After a successful spell with Sounders 2, where he appeared in 26 matches and scored seven goals, Parra returned to Southern California with Orange County SC in 2017 and became the first player in USL Championship history to record double-digit goals (11) and assists (10) in the same season.

In 2019, Parra signed with Las Vegas Lights FC, tallying 15 goals and seven assists in 31 appearances. In Parra’s first season with the Lights, he became the club’s all-time leading goal scorer and finished the 2019 campaign tenth in the USL Championship in goals scored.
