March 29, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — The Charlotte Independence will kick-off preseason for its seventh USL Championship season and first at the new American Legion Memorial Stadium on April 3, with a home match against Tormenta FC.
The Jacks are then penciled in for their first preseason away clash against Greenville Triumph SC on April 17.
Finally, the Independence are set to travel to Cary to close out the preseason by playing rival North Carolina FC.

Located in Uptown Charlotte, the new venue will have a capacity of 10,500 including standing area, and the type of amenities that have become standard at new venues across the Championship in recent years. Among them, a first for the Independence, will be a full video scoreboard and views of the surrounding city skyline that will make for a memorable experience on game-nights and at other events.

"Matt joining us adds a key piece to our front office team," said Charlotte Independence President & COO Tim Schuldt. "His in-depth soccer experience, industry and community relationships, values, and passion for growing our sport are going to help us in many areas. Matt will be key in connecting and growing our fan base, growing our corporate partners, integrating with our youth club, and implementing initiatives that impact the kids and our community."
Spear comes to the Independence after two seasons as the President of USL League One's Richmond Kickers. As the President of the Kickers, he successfully reengineered the team culture, turned around on-field results and drove investment to revitalize the team’s stadium and fan experiences. With the Independence, Spear will channel his vast experiences and relationships to further vault the Independence’s growth and ensure a terrific gameday experience is delivered at the all-new American Legion Memorial Stadium for all fans, including the Jack’s Brigade Rewards Club members.

Matt is also a founder of Soccer Resilience and Love United FC.

March 25, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — Charlotte Independence announced today that defender Joel Johnson has signed a new contract and will be returning to the club for the 2021 season, pending league and federation approval.
“I am very happy to be back with the Independence and help the team,” said Johnson. “I’m also excited for us to move to American Legion Memorial Stadium this season and I will do all I can to make us Champions.”
Johnson, 28, first signed for the Independence on April 7, 2016. He has appeared in 125 career matches with the Jacks in USL Championship action, starting 119 times and playing 10, 578 minutes. In 2020, the defender saw action in 14 USL Championship matches, starting all but one, and helped the Independence host its first home playoff match in club history.
“It’s fantastic to have Joel back,” said Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He has been a mainstay of our group for more than five years. He is a tremendous asset on the right flank and his ability to play on both sides of the ball is at the top of the USL Championship. We look forward to having him back for 2021.”
Prior to joining the Independence, the Liberia international spent the 2017 season with Real Jaén of the Spanish Segunda Division B, making 16 appearances and recording 1,267 minutes.
Johnson, born in Spain, joined Valencia CF’s youth system at an early age and progressed through the ranks, making his professional debut with Valencia B at 17. He would go on to make 69 appearances for the Spanish third division side, recording 3,440 minutes from 2009-12. In 2010, he made his La Liga debut in a 0-0 draw with Racing de Santander.
Johnson moved to Real Madrid C in 2012 and made 50 appearances, before signing with Real Jaén in 2014.

March 20, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — Charlotte Independence announced today the signing of midfielder Thomas de Villardi for the 2021 season, pending league and federation approval.
“I am pleased to announce Thomas as an addition to our roster,” said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “I look forward to seeing him buzz up and down the left flank. His attacking style and passing quality will add to our ability getting forward and creating on both sides of the field. More importantly, he brings a solid defensive mentality and quality to help solidify our back line.”
De Villardi, 26, was originally drafted by Minnesota United FC as the No. 42 overall pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.
Prior to joining the Independence, the midfielder moved from Minnesota United FC to USL Championship side Austin Bold FC in 2019. He played there for two seasons with 24 league appearances and 17 starts.
“I am very excited to play for Charlotte, especially in the new stadium,” said de Villardi. “I am ready to give all I got on the field for the fans and the community. I can’t wait for the season to start.”
De Villardi played collegiately at Duquesne University and the University of Delaware, spending two years with each program. De Villardi was a two-time All-Colonial Athletic Conference selection following his junior and senior seasons at Delaware. He was named the CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Performer in 2016 and selected to the CAA All-Tournament team in 2015 and 2016. Following his freshman season at Duquesne, the midfielder was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. He finished his college career with four goals and 16 assists.
The France native spent his youth career with En Avant de Guingamp of Ligue 1, the premier division in France, prior to beginning his collegiate playing career in the United States.
De Villardi also spent time on the U23 sides of Seattle Sounders FC and New York Red Bulls.

“I wanted to be back in Charlotte playing soccer, so I am grateful to have the opportunity to go on loan with the Independence this season,” said Bronico. “Charlotte is a place I hold close to my heart and I’m excited to continue my soccer journey back in the city.”
Bronico, 25, was originally drafted by the Chicago Fire as the No. 47 overall pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. In four seasons with the club, the midfielder made 66 appearances (40 starts), tallying two goals and eight assists.
A native of High Point, N.C., Bronico was traded from the Chicago Fire to Charlotte FC on Dec. 18, 2020. He became Charlotte FC's third-ever signing ahead of joining MLS in 2022, following Sergio Ruiz and Riley McGree.

CHARLOTTE – Charlotte Independence announced today that Brian Haynes will join the club as Assistant Coach. Haynes will work with Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries as a key member of the coaching staff.
“Brian will mesh quickly with our staff and players as he is a positive, forward looking individual,” said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “He was the first person I hired for my staff when I started with the Dallas Burn, so I have seen firsthand his exceptional ability to work with and help motivate players individually. The team will enjoy working with him and benefit from his quality.”
As Charlotte Independence’s Assistant Coach, Haynes will play a key role in the day-to-day preparation, training, and development of the Jacks’ playing philosophy and culture.
“I feel like Mike and I have some unfinished business from our days together in Dallas, so it was a no-brainer when he asked me to come to Charlotte,” said Haynes. “I am seeing signs that this club is headed in the right direction, so I’m excited to join Mike’s staff and help him get this team as far as we can get it to go.”
Born in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago, Haynes joins the Independence from FC Dallas, where he was in charge of the MLS side’s ECNL 08 Boys. Prior to this, Haynes joined Inter Miami CF’s Developmental Academy staff where he served in a variety of coaching positions, including a recent appointment as their U19 Academy Head Coach.
Haynes, who was tabbed as Jeffries’ first Assistant Coach in 2001 with Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas), brings valuable experience to the Independence as a professional player and coach. The former Trinidad and Tobago international had a successful playing career with the Burn from 1996-2000. His coaching experience dates back to 2001, when he joined Jeffries’ technical staff from 2001-06 as an assistant, following his retirement as a player. In 2012, he took over as the Head Coach for the Atlanta Silverbacks in the NASL, where he was named the 2013 NASL Coach of the Year.
Haynes also worked two years at Houston Dynamo FC’s Developmental Academy from 2018-2019.
Haynes graduated from Erskine College in 1989 where he was a three-time NSCAA All-American and a two-time District 6 MVP. He finished his career with 61 goals and 40 assists, both fourth on Erskine's all-time list, and was inducted into the Erskine College Hall of Fame in 2019.
Haynes holds a USSF National "A" Badge coaching license. He and his wife Jeanne have a son and a daughter.

March 13, 2021 (CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — Charlotte Independence announced today that goalkeeper Austin Pack has signed a new contract and will be returning to the club for the 2021 season, pending league and federation approval.
“Charlotte is like a second home to me,” said Pack. “I can’t express how excited I am to be returning for a second season with the Independence.”
Pack, 27, first signed with the Independence on February 10, 2020 after spending the previous two seasons with Portland Timbers 2 (2018) and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (2019).
Prior to making the move to the USL Championship, Pack played two seasons for Puerto Rico FC (2016-17), where he made 11 starts and recorded two shutouts during the 2017 NASL season.
“I am delighted to welcome Austin back and feel we have a top goalkeeping tandem in the USL Championship,” said Charlotte Independence General Manager and Head Coach Mike Jeffries. “Austin was a positive addition to our group last year in his daily work rate and mentality for the position. With his experience in both the NASL and USL, Austin has already proven his level in the league and earned the confidence of his teammates and coaching staff.”
Pack played collegiately for the Charlotte 49ers from 2012-15, notching 15 shutouts in 42 appearances. In the summer of 2015, the goalkeeper joined USL League Two side Carolina Dynamo where he made eight appearances.
