Charlotte (NC) — The Charlotte Independence professional soccer team has received defender Brendan McDonough on loan from Major League Soccer (MLS) side, Vancouver Whitecaps FC for the remainder of the USL Championship season. Per the agreement, Vancouver has the right to recall the loan at any point.  

A hometown standout, McDonough is an alumni of Charlotte Catholic High School. He spent his junior year in Germany training with lower division sides FT Braunschweig and Eintracht Braunschweig. After claiming three Big East Tournament championships in his four years at Georgetown University, McDonough was selected 35th overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. On March 6th, 2019, the 6-foot-2 defender signed his rookie MLS contract with Whitecaps FC. McDonough made his MLS debut on June 26th in a draw on the road against FC Dallas. 

McDonough will be available for selection as the Independence continue in USL Championship action on Friday, August 9th as the team travels to Loudoun United FC. After each side had a player shown a straight red card, Louisville snatched a late game winner, while the Independence were unable to find a goal a second consecutive match. 

A first half that saw a combined 14 shots, neither team were able to finish their opportunities for a scoreless first 45 minutes.

The complex of the match changed dramatically when Louisville City defender Paco Craig was shown a straight red card in the 60th minute. Furthermore, Independence midfielder Alex Martinez was shown a red card in the 72nd minute. 

The game's only goal came in the 81st minute when Louisville City forward Magnus Rasmussen poked a ball out to Luke Spencer, whose right-footed finish proved to be the game-winner.

Hill made six starts and nine appearance this season for the Independence, totaling 480 minutes played. The 22-year-old Scottish midfielder set up the go-ahead goal off a free kick in the Independence's win over Bethlehem Steel FC. 

Additionally, the Charlotte Independence have signed goalkeeper Josh Old to an academy contract. The 18-year-old Charlotte native is committed to join former Independence Goalkeeper Coach Joel Tyson and the Wofford University Men’s Soccer team this fall.

Birmingham (AL) — The Charlotte Independence's eight game unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday night in a 1-0 loss at BBVA Compass Field against Birmingham Legion FC. In an evenly fought match, the only difference in the score came in the 28th minute off a of a deflected shot.

Atlanta (GA) — The Charlotte Independence extended their beatless streak to eight games with a dramatic draw against Atlanta United 2 on Wednesday night. Trailing at halftime, the Independence battled back culminating in a 72nd minute equalizer from defender Aaron Maund. 

The Independence jumped out to the early lead when 38-year-old Independence legend Jorge Herrera netted his 70th career, USL Championship regular-season goal. The 27th minute score came off speedy forward Dominic Oduro breaking through the Atlanta backline on a counter attack and connecting with midfielder Alex Martinez in a wide position. From there, Marintez notched his fifth assist of the season. 

Before the halftime break, Atlanta United 2 forward Bienvenue Kanakimana recorded back-to-back goals to give the home team the lead at the intermission.

But the Independence would respond in dramatic fashion as defender Abdoulie Mansally navigated a free kick inch-perfect to Aaron Maund who recored his first goal on the season. 

The Independence will look to continue the undefeated run of form on short rest for a second road game on Saturday, July 27th at Birmingham Legion FC. In exchange, the Independence have received an undisclosed transfer fee. The club, front office and ownership thanks Michaël Maria for his service to the Charlotte community this season and wishes him the best of luck at Adelaide United FC. 

The 24-year-old, Maria made six starts for the Independence, registering six interceptions, seven tackles won and an 83.9% pass accuracy. Over the past month, Maria with the Curaçao National Team made a historic run to the Quarter Finals in the nation’s second-ever CONCACAF Gold Cup, being knocked out by eventual runner-ups, U.S. Men’s National Team. Prior to the Gold Cup, Maria lifted Curaçao to the King’s Cup Championship by converting the last penalty kick in Final’s shootout against Vietnam. 

The Independence continue in USL Championship action this Wednesday, July 24th against Atlanta United 2 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET with the official watch party hosted at Jack’s House Soccer Bar and Event Space (1523 Elizabeth Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204). TAMPA, Fla. – Charlotte Independence midfielder Enzo Martinez earned a spot on the Week 19 USL Championship Team of the Week following his game-winning goal performance against Saint Louis FC on Saturday night.  

Real Monarchs SLC forward Douglas Martinez received 31 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL Championship market. The New York Red Bulls II’s Jared Stroud and Chris Lema finished tied for second on 25 percent after each recording four goals over the club’s two victories for the week, with Lema notching the first four-goal game of the season against ATL UTD 2 on Saturday evening.

D – Sean McFarlane, Austin Bold FC: McFarlane had one goal, two key passes and completed 4 of 6 dribbles and 27 of 34 passes while winning 6 of 9 duels in Austin’s win against Orange County SC.

M – Jared Stroud, New York Red Bulls II: Stroud recorded four goals, one assist and six key passes over two games as the Red Bulls II recorded victories against Bethlehem Steel FC and ATL UTD 2.

Charlotte (NC) — The Charlotte Independence professional soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with a fourth consecutive home victory over Saint Louis FC on Saturday night. The 2-1 win moves the team into the 10th position in the USL Championship Eastern Conference, which is the final playoff spot. 

The Independence got off to a glowing start as forward Dominic Oduro connected with Niki Jackson on a headed goal. Jackson has two goals and one assist in the last three games for the Independence. 

After the halftime break, the Independence double their lead when defender Joel Johnson broke away from the Saint Louis defense and picked out Enzo Martinez for the eventual game-winner. 

However, Saint Louis came roaring back in the closing act of the game. In the 75th minute, forward Caleb Calvert  headed in a Lewis Hilton corner kick to put the away side with in striking distance. Furthermore, Independence defender Joel Johnson was shown a red card for a tackle on Kadeem Dacres. The Independence would see out the remainder of the match with 10 men.

Memphis 901 FC forward Elliot Collier has been voted the USL Championship Player of the Week for Week 18 of the 2019 season. Collier scored the first hat trick in 901 FC’s history as he led the side to a 4-1 victory against Hartford Athletic on Saturday night at AutoZone Park, a victory that marked the club’s first home league win in its history.

Collier received 76 percent of the poll conducted by a national panel of independent media representing every USL Championship market. Saint Louis FC’s Russell Cicerone finished second on 12 percent after recording a goal and assist in his side’s comeback to earn a 2-2 draw with Loudoun United FC.
