CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 10, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence and Phoenix Rising FC scored a goal a piece in tonight’s 1-1 draw at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The Jacks will be back at home on Saturday, July 17 for their third matchup vs. New York Red Bulls II. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM (ET).

In his first start of the season since joining the team a few weeks ago, #56 Sylvain Marveaux got the Jacks off to a hot start. He led a counter attack in the 2nd minute, finding #9 Irvin Parra on a slotted pass through two Phoenix defenders. Parra scored on the play and the Independence took the early lead, 1-0.

When asked about how it felt to get his first start, Marveaux stated: "Felt good. I haven't been playing for a while, a lot of good stuff to bring to the pitch but obviously I need to pick up my condition a little bit. I was happy for the assist. I should've scored a goal as well, but other than that we played a good game and I was happy to be there."

Phoenix Rising FC bounced back in the 21st minute off a pass from #14 Aodhan Quinn who found #56 David Egbo right in front of goal. His goal tied the game up at 1-1.

The Independence had several more great opportunities in the first half which developed from the back line with #88 Christain Dean. He played two great balls in the box, but the Jacks were not able to capitalize. The half remained, CLT 1 – PHX 1.

There were opportunities at both ends of the pitch throughout the second half, but Independence Goalkeeper #1 Austin Pack made a number of big saves on the night to keep the Jacks in the game. The most impressive came in the 49th minute off a Phoenix free kick. The shot, taken by #14 Aodhan Quinn, went diving over the wall and towards the bottom right corner. Pack came up with the diving save in what was also his first start of the 2021 season.

"Obviously I am excited to play, and it's been a long time coming,” stated Pack. “It's my second year with the club and last year with Covid I didn't get the opportunity to play. A longer season this year and they gave me the game and I was excited to be on the field and finally get my minutes in."

"Felt good overall on the performance,” stated Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries. “I was disappointed to get a tie at home, but we played really well and had enough chances to get to 2-1 in the first half. We weren't able to do it and then we managed the game much better the second half tonight. Clearly tired legs and we were fighting to get through it. I thought we did a pretty good job of limiting Phoenix, a very good and talented group. Unbalanced, fair and we'll take a lot of positives from it."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 7, 2021) – The Charlotte Independence suffered their second loss to New York Red Bulls II tonight by a score of 2-3 at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Your Jacks are back at home this Saturday, July 10 to face Phoenix Rising FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM (ET).

Although an unfortunate result, the team was energized by the 4,231 fans who came out in support of the club and the new venue.

“Yeah it was incredible, it was much needed honestly. It was great to hear everyone chanting,” stated Charlotte Independence Defender, #3 Hugh Roberts. “Not just chanting, but when a ‘Meg’ would happen they would cheer and that shows that they have a good understanding of the game. We appreciate those little things … and it was a great turnout for a Wednesday night. Even after the game people came up and shook our hands and gave us their appreciation. We really appreciated that, and it was great to see.”

New York Red Bulls II kicked off the scoring in the 13th minute after a goal from #36 Jeremy Rafanello. Then, it was the Jacks leading scorer, #29 Dane Kelly who took matters into his own hands for the rest of the first half. 

In the 19th minute, he ran onto a ball over the top from #17 Clay Dimick and opted for a cheeky chip over the goalkeeper. Then, in the 42nd minute Kelly had some fun at the top of the box taking a couple juggles before hitting the volley across frame and placing it into the side netting. The Charlotte Independence took the lead at halftime, 2-1.

When asked about how it felt to score Charlotte’s first two goals at the new stadium, Kelly explained, “I mean it feels good, like I told the guys, I think we are gonna be able to score some goals against them, but unfortunately they [NY Red Bulls] came out in front. It was good for me, but it was tough for the team.”

The Jacks came out strong to start the second half with several positive looks at goal, but the team approached a setback in the 63rd minute when Kelly suffered an injury that sent him to the bench for the remainder of the match. 

New York Red Bulls II were able to capitalize at the other end with goals from #67 Omar Sowe in the 70th minute and #71 Austin Brummett in the 79th minute.

“Disappointed in many, many ways,” stated Charlotte Independence Head Coach, Mike Jeffries.  “I thought Brandon was fantastic for the first fifteen minutes, and we were in a pretty big hole on plays that we just don’t make, like giving possession away easily and not being in spots to cover it. I thought when we went down a goal, we actually managed the game pretty well. Dane was fantastic to come through and get the two goals. I think I’m really disappointed that when we were up 2-1 we couldn’t hold the lead. We’ve been really good this year for the most part in terms of managing games and limiting chances, but the way we were broken down, it was just too easy."

As we make our final preparations, we’d like to share some additional information surrounding tickets, tailgates, VIP seating, merchandise and more! PROMOTIONS & GIVEAWAYS:

• First 1,000 fans receive a commemorative mini soccer balls. Go to the merchandise trailer near the Northeast corner inside the stadium.

• Chick-Fil-A will be on-site giving away FREE toy cows.

• Pick up a copy of our 12 page feature in the Charlotte Observer Special Section upon arrival.

• Stick around for the massive fireworks show after the game.

• Grab a Charlotte Independence Schedule magnet when you arrive.

TICKET BOOTHS/GATES:

Fans can purchase their tickets online, in advance through our ETIX website. 

For walk-up transactions:

• Ticket booths and Will Call will open at 5:30 PM.

• Gates into the stadium will open at 6:00 PM.

• The main ticket box offices and gates to the stadium are located at the East End on Charlottetowne Avenue.

Will Call and a Spanish speaking representative will be located at the Southeast Ticket Box Office on Charlottetowne Avenue. 

Mobile/PAH tickets will be sent through email. If you have not received them or need help opening them, please reach out to our Director of Ticketing & Operations: Jajuan Mabry (704) 206-1517.

Parking lots and ramps will open at 5:00 PM. Please park in the designated parking ramps as shown in the map below. 

Please do not park in local businesses lots or CPCC lots as you may be towed.
