CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (October 11th, 2020) – On Saturday, October 17th, the Chattanooga Red Wolves host Forward Madison in the last home match of the 2020 USL League One regular season. In addition to making a push for the playoffs, this contest serves as the inaugural P!NK Out match. CHI Memorial Hospital and the Chattanooga Red Wolves are partnering to support the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center in the fight against breast cancer.
The MaryEllen Locher Breast Center was inspired by the local television news anchor and health reporter who courageously battled breast cancer. As a result of her personal experience with cancer, MaryEllen pledged to make the breast cancer journey easier for all women. Working alongside CHI Memorial, she provided insight and inspiration for the development of a breast center that would combine the best possible medical care in a calm and understanding atmosphere. Reducing the time between diagnosis and treatment was MaryEllen’s primary goal. Although MaryEllen ultimately lost her battle to cancer in 2005, her legacy lives on in the thousands of women whose lives have been touched by the center which bears her name.
“It’s both an honor and incredible privilege to work collaboratively with CHI Memorial Hospital in the ongoing pursuit for a cure.”, says Chattanooga Red Wolves owner Bob Martino. “Raising awareness to fund research initiatives that assist the Mary Ellen Locher Breast Center is a step towards erasing this terrible disease.”
In 2020, it’s estimated that over 275,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. “About 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetimes,” says CHI Memorial Hospital Vice President of Marketing & Communications Lisa McCluskey. “With early detection, it is highly treatable and beatable. Since the beginning of the pandemic, many women have postponed getting this vital annual screening and run the risk of being diagnosed at a later stage. Events such as the Red Wolves Pink Out game help us to focus attention in a fun and engaging way on the importance of screening. It is the most important 20 minutes of a woman’s life. The Red Wolves have been an engaged partner with CHI Memorial in improving the health of our community.”
Fans are encouraged to show their support by wearing pink and the first 500 attendees will also receive a P!nk rally towel. There will be multiple fundraising and awareness events including a $1,000.00 donation for every Red Wolves goal scored, specialty pink drinks, a mobile mammogram screening center and contributions from the hospitality suite ticket sales. All proceeds to benefit the MaryEllen Breast Center.
