Chattanooga Red Wolves SC drew Forward Madison FC 1-1 on Wednesday at Breese Stevens Field. The team was able to secure one point on the road and extended its unbeaten run to eight matches.

Here are three takeaways from the final meeting between Chattanooga and Madison:

ANOTHER GRITTY PERFORMANCE

Week 16 brought the Red Wolves a two-game match week, leaving the team to play three games in seven days.

Following two draws with Lansing and Orlando, the team knew traveling to Madison to face Forward on their home turf wouldn’t be easy.

Despite falling behind 1-0 in the 20th minute of the match, the Red Wolves came back to equalize in the 77th minute and finished the match with 51.7% possession compared to Madison’s 48.3%.

The draw marked the team’s third consecutive. With a bye week to rest before returning to David Stanton Field on Saturday, July 27 to face FC Tucson, the Red Wolves have the perfect opportunity to regroup and break the streak of draws with another win at home. 

AMPONSAH SHINES

Appearing in nine matches this season, Nicholas Amponsah has been a quiet contributor for the Red Wolves this season. However, after earning starts in the past seven matches for Chattanooga, Amponsah has contributed to much of the recent success of the team.

The Ghanaian international netted the equalizer Saturday night, heading one home off of a cross sent in from the left wing by Vangjel Zguro following a corner kick. The equalizer marked Amponsah’s first goal of the season and Zguro’s sixth assist.

Amponsah had a solid defensive performance as well, recording five tackles, seven clearances, four interceptions and an 83.3% passing accuracy. The 6’2” defender came up big for Chattanooga in the 84th minute, intercepting a ball drilled across the Red Wolves six-yard line meant for Madison forward Brian Bement. Had Amponsah not stepped (or more accurately slid) in, the connection would have surely produced Madison’s second goal.

MANGELS CONTINUES IMPRESSIVE FORM

It’s no secret that goalkeeper Alex Mangels has been fantastic between the posts for the Red Wolves this season. Mangels finished Saturday night with three saves, two crosses claimed and one punching clearance.

The 6’4” California native currently leads the league in saves with 49. He is tied for third place in the league in clean sheets with five.

With the last loss for the Red Wolves coming on May 18, Mangels continues to play a vital role in the team’s recent progression up the table.

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC defender Nicholas Amponsah has been named to the USL League One Team of the Week for Week 16 of the league’s inaugural 2019 season.

Amponsah scored the game-tying goal for the Red Wolves against Madison in addition to completing 45 of 54 passes, recording five tackles and winning 10 of 13 duels Saturday night. 

Amponsah leveled the match in the 77th minute, heading one home off of a cross sent in from the left flank by Vangjel Zguro following a corner kick. The goal marked Amponsah’s first of the season and helped Chatttanooga steal one point on the road and hold on to fourth place in league standings. 

During Wednesday’s match against Orlando City B, Amponsah recorded two tackles, three clearances and a 94.1% passing accuracy. 

The Ghana native has appeared in nine matches this season and is a top three team leader in blocks, clearances and interceptions.

USL League One Team of the Week

GK – Juliano Chade, Orlando City B: Chade made five saves to keep OCB in the game against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC before the hosts scored a late equalizer last Wednesday night.

D – Thomas Roberts, North Texas SC: Roberts scored the opening goal, completed 47 of 60 passes overall – including 32 in the attacking half – and had five key passes in NTSC’s victory against Richmond.

D – Nicholas Amponsah, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC: Amponsah scored the game-tying goal for the Red Wolves against Madison in addition to completing 45 of 54 passes and winning 10 of 13 duels.

D – Patrick Bunk-Andersen, Toronto FC II: Bunk-Anderson scored a late goal to complete a performance that saw him win 4 of 5 duels and complete 38 of 46 passes in Toronto’s victory against Tormenta FC.

D – Callum Montgomery, North Texas SC: Montgomery won 8 of 9 duels, completed 30 of 37 passes, won three tackles and made three interceptions in addition to finding the net in North Texas’ road win against the Kickers.

M – Griffin Dorsey, Toronto FC II: Dorsey had one assist, two key passes and completed 29 of 32 passes overall while making six recoveries and recording two tackles in TFC II’s shutout of South Georgia.

M – Aaron Walker, Greenville Triumph SC: Walker scored a dramatic late winner against Orlando City B to cap a performance that also saw him complete 36 of 43 passes and record four shots.

M – Rafael Mentzingen, Lansing Ignite FC: Menztingen had a goal and two assists over the week, including scoring and providing the game-winning assist in Lansing’s Tuesday night win against Madison.

F – Jordan Jones, FC Tucson: Jones scored Tucson’s second goal in a 2-2 draw with Lansing and posted four shots, one key pass and completed 11 of 16 passes overall for the game.

F – Tumi Moshobane, Lansing Ignite FC: Moshobane scored both goals, recorded three shots on goal and one key pass and won 11 of 15 duels in Ignite FC’s 2-2 draw with FC Tucson on Saturday night.

F – Jordan Perruzza, Toronto FC II: Perruzza had one goal on three shots, made two key passes and completed 20 of 23 passes overall to help lead TFC II past South Georgia on Friday evening.

After 20 minutes of back-and-forth play, Forward Madison’s Connor Tobin put the ‘Mingos on the board first, finding the net off of a corner kick sent in by Danny Tenorio. Madison would hold on to its 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Despite a couple of chances early on in the second half, Chattanooga wouldn’t answer until the 77th minute when center defender Nicholas Amponsah headed one home off of a cross sent in from the left flank by Vangjel Zguro following a corner kick. The equalizer marked Amponsah’s first goal of the season and Zguro’s sixth assist.

Forwards Steven Beattie, Sito Seoane and YaYa Cisse would connect for chances, but ultimately none were successful.

Goalkeeper Alex Mangels was undoubtedly tested, facing 16 shots from Madison. He recorded three saves, two crosses claimed and one punch. Amponsah had a strong defensive display, recording five tackles and 83.3% passing accuracy on the night.

The match marked the third and final meeting between Chattanooga and Madison with Chattanooga stealing five of the possible nine points.

The point Saturday keeps Chattanooga in fourth place, just one point shy of Lansing Ignite FC and South Georgia Tormenta FC, with two games in hand on Lansing.

The month of June proved to be a prolific one for the Red Wolves. The squad finished with an impressive unbeaten 3-0-1 record, netting eight goals and only conceding four. Out of the eight goals scored within the month, four of them belonged to captain Steven Beattie, tying him at second place in the league with seven goals. The Irish forward also notched the first hat trick in Chattanooga Red Wolves history in the 3-2 win over Greenville on June 22.

Colin Falvey, Ami Pineda and Sito Seoane all netted their first goals of the season. Midfielder Conor Doyle tallied his second of the season.  

After weeks of dwelling in the middle of the league standings, the Red Wolves have now placed themselves in playoff positions going into the second half of the inaugural season. 

The team is heading into July looking to match the success it had in June. After kicking off the month drawing with both Lansing and Orlando and extending their unbeaten run to seven matches, the Red Wolves just might be able to pull it off with the possibility of taking 13 of July’s 15 points. 

The team travels to Wisconsin to face Forward Madison FC Saturday, July 13 at 8:00 p.m. ET. The match marks the third and final meeting between the two clubs and will be available to stream on ESPN+.

Following a bye week, the team returns home to host FC Tucson on July 27 at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC drew Orlando City B 1-1 on Wednesday at Montverde Academy in Orlando. Chattanooga was able to secure one point on the road and extended its unbeaten run to seven matches.

Here are three takeaways from the second of three meetings between Chattanooga and Orlando:

SITO STRIKES EARLY

Red Wolves forward put the Red Wolves on the board just 13 minutes into the match.

After receiving a long service outside of Orlando’s 18-yard box from Vangjel Zguro off the left defensive flank, Seoane took one touch off his chest and lobbed the ball in over goalkeeper Juliano Chade’s reach, giving the Red Wolves an early lead.

The goal marked Seoane’s second goal of the season. He netted his first back on June 15 against Richmond. The Spanish forward led the team in shots on Wednesday night with a total of four, three of which were on target.

Seoane has recently become an offensive force for the Red Wolves, starting at center striker in each of the past three matches. In those, he tallied nine shots, created four chances and recorded an average 78.6% passing accuracy.

The Red Wolves are unbeaten in the five matches this season in which they took the lead within the first 20 minutes, winning four and drawing one.

ZGURO CONTINUES TO SET IT UP

Coming out of the back, Vangjel Zguro has proven himself to be an important playmaker in crucial moments for the Red Wolves. His assist to Seoane on Wednesday night marked his fifth overall, putting him tied at first place in USL League One with North Texas’ Rodriguez.

Of his five assists, three were as a result of set piece situations. 

In his 14 appearances, he has created 15 chances for the Red Wolves.

MIDFIELD DISPLAY CONTINUES TO SHINE

Wednesday’s match against Orlando showed solid midfield performances from Ami Pineda, Conor Doyle and Ualefi.

Pineda recorded an 88.4% passing accuracy and two shots against Orlando. The 22-year-old has produced for the Red Wolves over the team’s past four matches, creating 12 chances, assisting three goals and netting his first goal of the season against Richmond on June 15.

Doyle led the team in both tackles and pass completion on Wednesday, recording six tackles and 97.8% passing accuracy. The McKinney, Texas native has started in all 15 matches for the Red Wolves, playing more than 1,300 minutes this season.

Ualefi posted a 97.5% passing accuracy and recorded four tackles against Orlando. The Brazilian is one of the most accurate passers on the team with a completion percentage of 86.4% and averages the most passes per 90 minutes at 49.1.  

Together, these three have proven to be a prolific mix in the middle for the Red Wolves, covering a lot of ground and coming up big both offensively and defensively.

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC drew Orlando city B 1-1 at Montverde Academy Wednesday night. The draw extends the Red Wolves’ unbeaten stretch to seven matches.

Forward Sito Seoane opened up scoring in the 13th minute, netting his second goal of the season. Defender Vangjel Zguro sent a long service in from the left defensive flank to find Seoane outside of Orlando’s 18-yard box. Seoane took one touch off his chest and lobbed the ball in over goalkeeper Juliano Chade’s reach, giving the Red Wolves an early lead. The goal marked Zguro’s fifth assist of the season.

The Red Wolves would hold on to the 1-0 lead until Orlando’s Tresor Mbuyu leveled the match up in the first minute of added time. Despite Orlando playing a man down for the final minutes of the game due to a red card, Mbuyu found the top left corner of the net after receiving a pass in from Orlando Captain Ates Diouf, tying it up 1-1. It was that score that would hold true at the final whistle.

Goalkeeper Alex Mangels finished the night with two key saves, one cross claimed and one punch. Midfielder Conor Doyle had a solid performance, as well, recording six tackles and a 97.8% passing accuracy, the highest of the team. Fellow midfielder Ualefi recorded two tackles and a 97.5% passing accuracy. It was Seoane who led the team in shots on the night with four total, three of which were on target.

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC’s Tim Hankinson has been named USL League One’s Coach of the Month for June after his side went undefeated through the month to move into the playoff positions at the midway point of the league’s inaugural season.

According to Hankinson, the honor reflects more than just his coaching. 

“It’s a reflection of the team’s commitment to win,” Hankinson said. “That makes me proud of the fight they have within.” 

The Red Wolves went 3-0-1 over the course of the month and are currently on a six-game undefeated streak overall as they enter Wednesday night’s contest with Orlando City B at Montverde Academy. At the center of the club’s success has been its undefeated home record, with the side currently 5-0-3 at David Stanton Field this season.

Under his leadership, the Red Wolves are looking to build off the team’s recent success heading into the second half of the season. 

Player experience and skill level aside, there’s one thing Hankinson knows about his team. 

“I have a team with determination, heart and purpose,” Haninson said. 

Hankinson was selected as League One’s Coach of the Month by the USL League One Technical Committee. This marks his first-ever USL League One Coach of the Month honor. 

The Red Wolves are on the road for two consecutive road matches, beginning with Orlando City B on Wednesday, July 10. Kickoff for that game is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The team travels to Madison, Wisconsin to face Forward Madison FC on Saturday, July 13. The match marks the third and final meeting between Chattanooga and Madison and kicks off at 8 p.m. ET. Chattanooga Red Wolves SC has acquired El Paso Locomotive FC’s Daniel Navarro on a season-long loan. Navarro will be available to the Red Wolves for the remainder of the 2019 season, beginning Wednesday, July 10 on the road against Orlando City B.

Navarro first joined the Red Wolves on a short-term loan deal last month. During his two matches played with the team, he proved to be a solid addition to the Red Wolves defense, earning starts in both games and recording four clearances, three tackles and an 80.9% passing accuracy. 

Navarro comes to the Red Wolves from USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive FC. Navarro has also rostered with SC Paulo and Campeonato Gaucho in Brazil.

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC begin a two-game road trip on Wednesday, July 10 as they travel to Orlando, Florida to take on Orlando City B. The match marks the second of three meetings between the clubs and kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Montverde Academy. Fans can stream the action live on ESPN+.

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC (6-4-4) will travel to Orlando for a mid-week matchup against Orlando City B (3-9-3) on Wednesday. This is just the second meeting between the two clubs with either side grabbing a point from a 0-0 draw at Montverde Academy earlier this season.

The match is the first of a two-game road trip for the Red Wolves after a nearly month-long home stand.

Orlando City B will look to bounce back from a brutal stretch of results with a big win at home as the side has lost their last four matches heading into Wednesday’s game.

Players to Watch

CHATTANOOGA: Ami Pineda, midfielder. The California native has been perhaps the biggest creative force behind the Red Wolves attack so far, this season. He ranks second on the team in both assists (3) and chances created (15). Pineda has also been selected in the USL League One Team of the Week on two occasions.

ORLANDO: Sergio Costabile Elia, midfielder. Better known as Serginho, the Brazilian international leads the club in nearly every offensive category. He sits atop the team rankings in total assists (3), shots (24) and chances created (19). He’s the main playmaker in Orlando’s attack, and he is crucial to the team’s success as he has started every match so far this season.

Last Time Out

CHATTANOOGA: The Red Wolves once again held on to their perfect record at home with a 1-1 draw against Lansing Ignite. After an opening goal from Lansing, a couple of first-half red cards reduced both sides to 10 men going into the second half. Red Wolves defender Tony Walls grabbed the equalizer in the 55th minute, and the score would remain knotted the rest of the way.

ORLANDO: Orlando City spent another week at the bottom of the League One table after their fourth-straight defeat at home against Greenville Triumph SC. The match also marked their third consecutive shutout loss, with the club having scored just one goal since June 12. 

UP NEXT: 

Chattanooga will continue the team’s two-match road trip on Saturday, July 13 against Forward Madison FC. The third and final regular season meeting between the two clubs is set to kickoff at 8 pm eastern and can be streamed on ESPN+.

Orlando City B is a USL League One club that originally began play in 2016. Owned and operated by MLS side Orlando City SC and based at the Orlando City Development Academy in Montverde, Florida, the club plays its home games at Montverde Academy. Chattanooga Red Wolves SC defender Tony Walls has been named to the USL League One Team of the Week for Week 15 of the league’s inaugural 2019 season.

The Wisconsin native scored the equalizer to draw Lansing 1-1 at David Stanton Field Saturday night, extending the team’s unbeaten stretch to six games.

Walls headed one home into the top left corner of the net off an Amirgy Pineda corner kick to level the match in the 55th minute. The goal marked Walls’ first of the season. 

Walls also completed 21 of 26 passes and recorded one tackle in his impressive defensive display against Lansing. 

Week 15 is his second appearance on Team of the Week.

GK – Dallas Jaye, Greenville Triumph SC: Jaye recorded a three-save shutout as Greenville became the first side to hold North Texas without a goal in a game this season, earning a point at Toyota Stadium.

D – Evan Lee, Greenville Triumph SC: Lee won 5 of 5 duels and recorded three interceptions, three recoveries and two clearances as Triumph SC earned a 0-0 draw against North Texas SC.

D – Cesar Murillo, North Texas SC: Murillo won 6 of 9 duels and completed 23 of 33 passes while recording one key pass as he helped his side record a shutout against Greenville Triumph SC.
