Stephen Carroll is preparing for his eighth season as a Detroit City FC defender. Carroll stands alone as the all-time appearance leader for Le Rouge and was named the 2018 Black Arrow MVP. As a City Centurion, Carroll has made 148 professional appearances for the club, more than any other City Centurion. He is also the longest-tenured current captain in Detroit professional sports. Carroll recently signed a new, two-year contract extension with the club, which has an option for the 2027 season. He is also the first and only player in club history to appear in 200 competitive matches for Le Rouge.
Since Le Rouge’s jump to the USL, Carroll has been a mainstay in the squad and a key part of all three seasons, playing over 2,500 league minutes each since 2022. Carroll has started 92 matches to date in the USL Championship.
Carroll officially became captain of Detroit City FC in 2019. Under Trevor James, he helped the club win a Great Lakes Division trophy and silverware again in the fall when it claimed the NPSL Member’s Cup.
In 2018, Carroll returned to be part of a strong backline; his performance during the 2018 season earned him the club’s Black Arrow MVP Award, officially placing him among some of the greatest to wear the crest.
The Cork, Ireland native joined Le Rouge before the 2017 National Premier Soccer League season when the club was playing in the amateur ranks. Carroll was a key squad member in the team that went on to win the 2017 NPSL Midwest Region Final against AFC Ann Arbor.
