Matt Sheldon is embarking on his second season in the Rouge and Gold. Sheldon became a mainstay on the backline after making 33 appearances for DCFC last season. His lengthy experience in the USL Championship brought experience into the DCFC clubhouse.
Prior to joining Detroit City, Sheldon played for Eastern Conference side Hartford Athletic. Sheldon appeared in 29 matches for Hartford in 2023, making the third most interceptions, winning the second most duels, and registering a goal and an assist. In 2022, Sheldon was signed by Charleston Battery, where he would make 27 starts for the Eastern Conference side. In the 2,322 minutes of play, Sheldon would record 32 interceptions and win 37 tackles.
Sheldon joined FC Tulsa before the 2019 season, where he spent three years, his longest tenure with a single club. During his time at Tulsa, Sheldon made a significant impact on their defense, starting in 65 matches and playing 5,491 minutes from 2019 to 2021.
The Bellevue, Washington native played college soccer at UC Davis, where he made 61 appearances for the Big West Conference team. After college, Sheldon spent a year with the San Jose Earthquakes U23 side before joining Ventura County Fusion in 2015. He spent part of 2016 in Germany with SG Kinzenbach before returning to the USA to play for the USL side Orange County Blues later in the year. After a year in Orange County, Sheldon moved to Saint Louis FC.
