TUCSON, Ariz. (Feb. 26, 2021) — FC Tucson announced today that the club has signed defender Kaelon Fox, pending league and federation approval. Fox is the eighth new signing to FC Tucson’s developing 2021 roster.
“I am extremely excited to get started with FC Tucson,” said Kaelon Fox. “This is an amazing organization with a historic past and bright future. After speaking with (FC Tucson) coach Galas and hearing about how they conduct themselves as a professional club, it was a very easy decision to play in Tucson in 2021.”
Fox, 25, most recently played for Þór Akureyri of the Inkasso-deild karla (The Inkasso League), the second-highest professional level in the Icelandic football league system. The Kentucky native helped Þór finish fifth on the league table for the 2020 season. Fox, a versatile center-back and defensive midfielder began his professional career by signing with Völsungur, of the Icelandic third division, for the club’s 2019 season.
“After being in Iceland the past two years I am looking forward to some Arizona sun and in bringing the organization some hardware,” added Fox.
The 25-year-old’s USL experience includes two seasons of play in USL League Two, playing for Reading United AC in 2017 and Mississippi Brilla FC in 2018. In his two seasons of USL League Two play, Fox made 13 appearances, totaling over 842 minutes of play as a defender and midfielder, helping both clubs to second-best standings in their respective divisions.
“We’re adding some experience and great leadership with the signing of Kaelon Fox,” said FC Tucson Head Coach John Galas. “He’s a great young man who we feel will add so much in our locker room and on the field this year.”
Fox began his NCAA Division I career in 2013 for the University of Kentucky, playing in 19 of the team’s 20 games, logging 1160 minutes, scoring two goals and tallying one assist in his freshman season. The Kentucky native played two more seasons with the University of Kentucky, helping The Wildcats form one of the conference’s best partnerships in central defense in 2014, leading the league in goals-against average (0.76), and keeping clean sheets in 50 percent of the 20 games that season. Fox played his final collegiate season in 2018 with the University of Saint Francis, starting all 18 matches from the center back position, scoring three goals and adding one assist.
With the addition of Fox, FC Tucson’s roster currently stands at 15 players total, including 2020 returners Shak Adams, Roberto Alarcon, Manu Ferriol, Jordan Pena, Charlie Dennis, Sam Biek and Rafa Guerrero.
