Ramos Carpio Named To USL Team Of The Week

Midfielder Jasson Ramos Carpio helped the Tulsa Roughnecks end a four-match losing streak on Friday night with his best performance of the 2016 campaign. On Tuesday, Carpio was rewarded for his performance with a spot on the USL Team of the Week.

It is the first such honor for the young Guatemalan who is in his first season in the USL.

In Friday’s 2-2 draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy II, the Roughnecks spotted Los Dos a two-goal lead before battling back, and Carpio was responsible for the match-tying goal. In the 47th minute, his curling corner kick deflected off the glove of Galaxy keeper Bennett Sneddon and into the back of the net.

In addition, Carpio was an offensive threat through much of the match with several impressive runs into the LA defense.

Last week’s meeting was the first of two straight between the clubs. This Friday, June 24, the Roughnecks will travel to Los Angeles for the return leg of the two meetings between the sides.

Roughnecks Battle Back For Draw With High-Scoring Galaxy II

Early on, it looked like the recent woes would continue for the Tulsa Roughnecks FC, but the club battled back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a 2-2 draw against the Los Angeles Galaxy II Friday night in front of 3,829 at ONEOK Field.

The tie snapped Tulsa’s four-game losing streak, including the squad’s worst-ever defeat, 7-1 at Saint Louis FC last Saturday, improving to 2-9-2 on the season.

With the draw, Los Angeles (5-2-8), which lost in the USL final last season and entered the match as the league's top-scoring team, moved into a tie for second place with Colorado Springs in the Western Conference table.

The Galaxy surged to a 2-0 lead in the first 23 minutes, with both goals coming off of set pieces, and it looked like another disappointing result was inevitable. But the Roughnecks showed impressive resilience and determination by regrouping, clawing their way back into the contest and then enjoying the territorial advantage for much of the remainder of the night.

“After last week’s kebobble in St. Louis, we go into the first (25 minutes), we’re 2-nil down again, but we showed that we do care, we matter, we ground it out, and we got a result,” said Tulsa coach David Irving. “We had the better chances. We ground out a result, so we took some small steps in the right direction."

“It was a good night, our fans are unbelievable, they stick with us and we are trying to fix it. It was a good, disciplined, professional performance tonight.”

Roughnecks forward Sammy Ochoa, who scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season on a penalty kick just before halftime to jump-start the comeback, feels this could be the beginning of a Tulsa resurgence.

“Two mistakes, but we got back into the game, we got a point and we’ll take the point any day,” Ochoa said. “I think it’s a good result, compared to last week, so we’ll take that. During the week, we trained, we talked, we said we’re going to fight. We let two goals in early, but we fought back. It was a good team effort, so it shows we’re all on the same page. So hopefully, we go from here.”

L.A. jumped out to a fast start, getting on the scoreboard in the third minute on Jeffrey Payeras’ first goal of the season. A corner kick from Josh Turnley sailed into the middle of the box, where Payeras lunged forward to knock home a header from seven yards out.

The Galaxy II made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute when Jack McBean notched his league-leading 12th goal of the season. Taking a free kick from just beyond the penalty area, McBean drilled a 19-yard blast through the wall of Tulsa defenders, nicking off of one of them and past goalkeeper Jake Feener.

The Roughnecks nearly got one back seven minutes later off a free kick of their own. Gustavo Villalobos chipped it from 35 yards out into the middle of the box, where David Abidor volleyed it from five yards out. It appeared to be heading towards the upper right corner, but Los Angeles goalkeeper Bennet Sneddon leaped to get a hand on it, deflecting it over the crossbar.

Tulsa finally broke through in the 42nd minute on Ochoa’s PK. Ochoa generated the call himself, chasing down a lead pass when he was tripped by L.A.’s Alejandro Covarrubias just inside the top left corner of the box.

Ochoa then stepped up to the dot and slotted a low shot just inside the right post, past the diving Sneddon.

Infused with momentum, the Roughnecks almost tied it in first-half stoppage time when Jasson Ramos Carpio fed a sneaky pass through several defenders to Cristian Mata cutting in from the left wing. Sneddon made a nice, aggressive save as he charged out and got enough of Mata’s low shot from about 10 yards out to send it wide of the right post.

The Roughnecks continued to carry the play in the second half, getting the equalizer just two minutes after halftime on what was officially deemed an “own goal.” Ramos Carpio delivered a corner kick into the box, and as Sneddon jumped out to punch the ball away, it ricocheted off his wrist and into the back of the net.

Ramos Carpio had another opportunity to put Tulsa ahead in the 71st minute when he lined up for a free kick from 30 yards out, but his shot drifted just over the crossbar.

The Galaxy II then had their own prime chance to seize a victory with a dangerous free kick about a minute into stoppage time, but McBean’s blast from 18 yards out sailed over the crossbar.

“All in all, not the three points that we wanted but a step in the right direction,” Irving said. “And hopefully that will give us confidence. Playing against the Galaxy, they’re one of the best teams in the league. It was a little nervy at the end, when you say, ‘Well they’ve got a free kick at the edge of the box, let’s hope he misses the goal,’ and he did, so we had a little bit of Lady Luck tonight that put us in the right direction.”

The Roughnecks’ lineup featured two new players as Irving searches for the right player combinations. Midfielder Garry Lewis started his second straight game after joining the club last week, and Broken Arrow product Bryce Taylor, who was signed as a free agent, made his Roughnecks debut when he entered the game as a substitute in the 64th minute.

“We’re trying to change things up a little bit, and there might be a couple more within the next week or so,” Irving revealed. “Obviously, sometimes, it isn’t our plan. And confidence is a big thing, and the longer you don’t get any confidence, it’s harder to come back. Obviously, that was a step in the right direction. It was a good performance to come back from 2-nil down, and coulda shoulda woulda, we coulda won the game. We had the better chances, really.”

Tulsa will face this same Galaxy II side in its next outing, next Friday, June 24 in Los Angeles.

Roughnecks Add Local Product Bryce Taylor

The Tulsa Roughnecks today finalized the signing of another local product. Head Coach David Irving announced the club had come to terms with Broken Arrow, Oklahoma native Bryce Taylor. The forward will be available for Friday’s match with the Los Angeles Galaxy II.

Taylor played for several youth clubs in the city area and played for Broken Arrow High School. He played college soccer at Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma and at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The 27-year-old has previously played in the USL for Wilmington and Austin, and was with the Hammerheads earlier this season. In his career, he has scored six goals in USL play.

He will wear the number 15 shirt for the Roughnecks.

LOS DOS – The Galaxy II have arguably been the most successful MLS 2 team since joining USL in 2014. In their first season, Los Dos won 17 regular season games, second-most in the league. Last year, they won 14 regular season games and advanced to the USL Championship Game before losing at Rochester in extra time.

THIS SEASON – The Galaxy II will present a tough challenge for the Roughnecks. Los Dos has 22 points in 14 matches this season, losing only two times. However, in their last six matches, they have won only once and have played to four draws.
TRFC will look to bounce back from its worst loss in two seasons of USL play, dropping a 7-1 decision to Saint Louis last Saturday. The Roughnecks are winless in their last four matches and have 7 points in 12 outings this season.

WHO TO WATCH – Sammy Ochoa continues to lead the Roughnecks in all offensive categories. The former Seattle Sounders striker has six goals and three assists on the season.

GARRY LEWIS TO MAKE TULSA DEBUT – Midfielder Garry Lewis will make his home debut for the Roughnecks on Friday. Lewis has joined the Roughnecks on loan from the Jacksonville Armada of the North American Soccer League and started last week’s match at Saint Louis. The University of North Carolina product has spent time in Finland prior to joining the Armada this season.

FIRST OF 2 ON ESPN 3 – Friday’s match is the first of two straight home matches at ONEOK Field that will be shown on ESPN 3. The match on July 1, when the Roughnecks host Arizona United, will also be televised live.

Roughnecks Blasted By Saint Louis

A difficult run for Tulsa Roughnecks FC continued Saturday night with a lackluster 7-1 defeat to Saint Louis FC at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in St. Louis, Missouri. The loss is the fourth straight loss for TRFC who still has 7 points on the season with a 2-9-1 record.

Saint Louis improved to 19 points with a 5-4-4 record.

From the start, the Roughnecks backline was chasing the speedy Saint Louis forwards. Straight from the opening kickoff, Tulsa goalkeeper Jake Feener was under heavy pressure, producing a big save only 60 seconds into the match.

Three minutes later, Saint Louis was on the board as Seth Rudolph left Feener with no chance with a right-footed finish off a corner kick to give STLFC the quick 1-0 lead.

In the 17th minute, Tulsa nemesis Irvin Herrera cut inside a sliding David Abidor and finished for goal number two.

TRFC’s best chance of the half came in the 19th minute, as Saint Louis goalkeeper Mark Pais fumbled a cross that fell to Anthony Peters. With a wide open goal, the defender’s right-footed shot on the turn was wide of the far post to keep the Roughnecks scoreless.

Jamiel Hardware produced the third goal of the half for Saint Louis in the 38th minute.

It took STLFC only two minutes into the second half to add to its lead. Rudolph was left unmarked at the top of the box and blasted a shot into the top corner of the net to make it 4-0.

Seconds after the kickoff, Hardware set up an unmarked Herrera in front of the goal for an easy finish for goal number five. It was the striker’s sixth goal this season against Tulsa.

Jordan Roberts and Vince Cicciarelli capped the big night for STLFC with goals six and seven.

The goal was little consolation for the Roughnecks.

The seven goals were the most ever conceded by TRFC.

Things will not get any easier for the Roughnecks. Next on the schedule is a pair of games against Los Angeles Galaxy II. The first one will come on Friday at ONEOK Field in a match that will be televised on ESPN 3. Los Dos swept both meetings with the Roughnecks last season.

PREVIEW – The Roughnecks are back on the road Saturday, making the trip up Interstate 44 to face Saint Louis FC at 7:30pm Saturday night. It is the first of four meetings this season between the two clubs.

THE TWO TEAMS – Both teams will be looking to end winless streaks in the match. The Roughnecks have suffered three straight defeats, while Saint Louis has tied twice and lost in its last three outings. Tulsa has 7 points in 11 matches this season while Saint Louis has 16 in 12 games.

THIS SEASON – It will be the third of four meetings between the Interstate 44 rivals. On April 16, the two sides played to a 0-0 draw in St. Louis, while the Roughnecks suffered a 5-2 defeat at ONEOK Field on May 21. Tulsa actually led 2-1 at halftime, but surrendered four second-half goals as Iarfhlaith Davoren was given a straight red card in only the 16th minute.

GETTING HEALED – Tulsa is expected to be near full strength for the match for the first time this season. Goalkeeper Alex Mangels is expected to be the only casualty as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Newcomer Hunter Harrison is expected to backup Jake Feener in the match.

GARRY LEWIS JOINS ROUGHNECKS ON LOAN – Midfielder Garry Lewis has officially joined the Roughnecks on loan from the Jacksonville Armada of the North American Soccer League. The University of North Carolina product has spent time in Finland prior to joining the Armada prior to this season.

CLASH OF TOP GOAL SCORERS – Saturday’s match will be a meeting of two of the USL’s top goal scorers this season. Roughnecks captain Sammy Ochoa and Saint Louis forward Irving Herrera are tied for fourth in the league with six goals each. Four of Herrera’s goals came during the Saint Louis victory at ONEOK Field on May 21.

ROUGHNECKS TO APPEAR ON ESPN 3 –Each of the next two home matches for the Roughnecks will be televised live from ONEOK Field on ESPN 3 as part of the USL’s new Game of the Week package. The two matches will include the June 17 meeting with the Los Angeles Galaxy II and the July 1 matchup with Arizona United. It will be the first-ever national appearances for the Roughnecks.

Roughnecks Drop Black Gold Opener

The second version of the Black Gold Derby did not start off well for the Tulsa Roughnecks FC.

In front of 4,913 cheering fans, the Roughnecks renewed their intra-state rivalry with the Oklahoma City Energy FC and wound up on the short side of a 2-0 decision Saturday night at ONEOK Field.

The Energy received goals by Wojciech Wojcik and Daniel Gonzalez, both on assists from Kyle Hyland, within an eight-minute span midway through the first half to take control of the match. OKC (4-1-4) has now won three in a row and is unbeaten in its last eight, losing just its season-opener 2-1 to Colorado Springs back on Mar. 26. They move into a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference.

Tulsa (2-8-1) made a push in the second half, but was unable to solve OKC goalkeeper Cody Laurendi, who needed to make just two saves for the shutout. The Roughnecks remain in 14th place in the 15-team West.

“Very disappointing,” said Tulsa coach David Irving of the loss, the team’s third in a row. “I thought we started off pretty well. We give away a couple of awful goals, to tell you the truth, and then we come back, and in the second half, we tried to make a fist of it. The boys are working hard, they’re not laying down or anything, but confidence is a good factor, no matter what sport you play.”

Eight minutes later, OKC took a two-goal lead after Hyland’s cross from the top left of the penalty area sailed past several players and found Gonzalez on the right side for a booming one-timer from 4 yards out.

“At 2-nil, the next team that scores could go on to win, but we just couldn’t break them down, and they packed it in and made it difficult for us,” Irving said of the Roughnecks’ attempt to battle back. “They threw their bodies at the ball, we tried to make some changes to make it happen, and just couldn’t do it. It’s very disappointing that we continue to let some bad goals in.”

Tulsa was missing midfielder Iarfhlaith Davoren, who was serving his one-game suspension for receiving a red card in the previous match, although they did get forward Cristian Mata back on the field after he sat out the previous six outings with a persistent ankle injury.

Irving also hinted at some more changes possibly coming for the team.

“We may have to try to shuffle the deck a little bit, maybe bring in some fresh faces, just to freshen up and get through this patch,” Irving said. “They worked hard, they just weren’t quite good enough.”

After having the last two weeks off, the Roughnecks will be back in action next Saturday night, facing Saint Louis FC, now tied with OKC for fourth in the West, on the road at 7:30 p.m.

Roughnecks Add GK Hunter Harrison

The Roughnecks have signed a third goalkeeper this week, adding Dallas, Texas native Hunter Harrison. Harrison originally committed to play collegiately for Oregon State University but eventually spent time with Oral Roberts University in Tulsa.

Harrison will be on the bench Saturday against Oklahoma City as Alex Mangels is unavailable due to a hamstring injury.

“Hunter attended our very first tryout camp in Tulsa last year,” said Tulsa coach David Irving. “He was impressive during the combine, and he has been a player who we have followed ever since. We are fortunate to have him available and glad to give him his first professional opportunity.”

Harrison will be on the bench Saturday against Oklahoma City as Alex Mangels is unavailable due to a hamstring injury.

It is the first of four meetings this season between the two clubs.

THE TWO TEAMS
TRFC will enter the match with 7 points and a 2-7-1 record through its first ten matches of the regular season. Oklahoma City comes into the match with 13 points and a 3-1-4 mark through eight matches.

THE SERIES
Tulsa and Oklahoma City met four times during the regular season last year with each team winning one match. The two teams also played to a pair of draws. OKC was the opponent for the Roughnecks first-ever game in the USL, a 1-1 draw before 8,335 fans at ONEOK Field.

WEEKEND OFF
The match will mark the first action for the Roughnecks since a home match against Saint Louis on May 21. The Roughnecks had a rare weekend off last week after playing five matches in 18 days to open the month of May. It will mark one of two home matches for Tulsa during the month of June as Los Angeles Galaxy II will visit ONEOK Field on Friday, June 17.

OCHOA STILL IN FORM
TRFC captain Sammy Ochoa has been in top form recently, scoring in four straight matches for the Roughnecks. He leads Tulsa with six goals and three assists. The six goals tie him for fourth most is USL, while the three assists are tied for second most in the league.

ORANGE KITS
The Roughnecks will wear their traditional home, orange home kits for Saturday’s match. Oklahoma City will be in its all blue kits.

MARCH TO THE MATCH
At 6:45pm, all fans are invited to participate in the March to the Match that will be led by the Roustabouts. The March will begin at the Oil Derrick Entrance and conclude at The Rig, the seating section of the Roustabouts.

AFTER PARTY AT LEFTY’S ON GREENWOOD
Roughnecks players will be available for photos and autographs on the field at the conclusion of the match. Later, the players will also be at an After Match Party at Lefty’s on Greenwood which is located across the street from ONEOK Field at the corner of Archer Street and Greenwood Avenue.

THE BROADCASTS
Fans in Tulsa can listen to the match live on AM 1300 with Jeremie Poplin and David Saunders calling the action. The pregame show will begin at 6:45PM.
The match will also be shown live online through the USL Match Center on YouTube.

ORANGE KITS
