FC Tulsa to Host Mayfest Art Market During Next Saturday's Black Gold Derby

TULSA – A Mayfest Art Market is coming to FC Tulsa’s next home match. As FC Tulsa plays host to in-state rival OKC Energy FC on Saturday, September 12, local artists will set up shop around the concourse at ONEOK Field for fans to get a taste of the Tulsa art scene, courtesy of Mayfest and ahha Tulsa.
With Mayfest 2020 cancelled this year due to the global pandemic, FC Tulsa’s weekend match will provide a backdrop for Tulsa’s artists to showcase their work. While the live music and food vendors that typically accompany a full Mayfest art festival won’t be present, September 12 will be a chance for art and sport to join together again for the city of Tulsa.
For the match, Mayfest reached out to artists who would have normally set up at the May art festival to participate next Saturday at ONEOK Field. About 20 local artists have committed to being at the match and will be selling their work from the time the gates open at 5:30 p.m. through the end of the match.
The Mayfest Art Market is one of just many add-ons to Saturday’s main event at ONEOK Field, the first home Black Gold Derby match in the FC Tulsa era. Stay tuned throughout next week as more exciting announcements surrounding the rivalry match will be made.

RECAP: Darío Suárez's brace leads FC Tulsa to first home win

TULSA – FC Tulsa is back to its winning ways. A brace from Darío Suárez in front of a raucous home crowd earned FC Tulsa a 2-1 victory over Rio Grande Valley FC Toros. The win puts FC Tulsa level on points, wins, and goal differential with Austin Bold FC for second place in Group D, setting up a pivotal doubleheader against Bold down in Texas on Saturday and Tuesday.
The match began with FC Tulsa on the front foot at the outset, creating chances through its dynamic attack. That attack proved fruitful as in the 25’ Lebo Moloto slipped through Eric Bird, who centered it for Suárez. The Cuban thundered it into the back of the net to give FC Tulsa the lead.
That lead was short-lived, however, as Luka Prpa found the ball at his feet in the 28’, slotting a finish past Sean Lewis to make it 1-1 quickly after Tulsa’s opener. The match would go into the break level, but Tulsa made a double sub at halftime which reignited the home side.
After Rodrigo da Costa and Vangjel Zguro came on, FC Tulsa’s attack was reinvigorated, and the team pressed forward for a winner. It would come through Suárez again, as in the 68’ the Cuban was served a centered pass from captain and fellow Cuban Ariel Martínez. Suárez met the ball and blasted it again into the back of the net to make it 2-1 and it was samba time in T-Town.
FC Tulsa would create several more chances as the 90 minutes went on, but when the full time whistle blew, the first home win of the FC Tulsa era was solidified in front of the faithful fans.
Here are three takeaways from Wednesday night.
1) Samba time for Suárez – After his last-minute equalizer was disallowed on Saturday, Suárez left no doubt on Wednesday. The forward bagged a pair of goals, putting FC Tulsa back in the win column.
2) First home win of the FC Tulsa era – FC Tulsa secured three points at ONEOK field for the first time as a club, and with four more home matches remaining in the season, more opportunities are on the horizon.
3) Massive matches upcoming – While Wednesday’s win was crucial in putting FC Tulsa level with Bold FC, Saturday and Tuesday down in Austin are even more so for the playoff race. FC Tulsa has a chance to nab up to six points off of Bold in the race for the playoffs.

Scouting Rio Grande Valley FC Toros
Points have been tough to come by for the team from the Valley, as it’s managed to secure just three draws in 10 matches. Most recently, RGV FC have fallen at home 3-1 to San Antonio and 3-2 to Bold FC.
Offensive production has been the biggest weak spot from RGV–the club have mustered just eight goals in its 10 matches. Defender Robert Castellanos leads the team with two goals on the season, including one in FC Tulsa’s 2-1 win back at the beginning of August.
Storylines to Watch
Quick Turnaround – FC Tulsa must prepare quickly for Wednesday having played on Saturday night. This fixture congestion will continue throughout the beginning of September, as the club has upcoming matches on Wednesday, Saturday and Tuesday down in Austin, and then the following Saturday against Energy FC.
Fight for the playoffs – With Austin Bold’s draw on Sunday and FC Tulsa’s loss on Saturday, Bold FC sits just three points ahead of FC Tulsa for the second spot having played one more match than Tulsa. The gap remains for FC Tulsa to go level Bold FC, should it get three points on Wednesday.
Tulsa comes in Twos – Through eight matches in 2020, FC Tulsa’s results have all come in pairs. Opening draws against Sacramento and OKC were followed by wins at RGV and Saint Louis. Another pair of draws against San Antonio and Austin and now a pair of losses to SAFC and SKCII have Tulsa where it is now. FC Tulsa will be looking to break that trend and rattle off more than a pair of wins starting Wednesday.

RECAP: Heartbreak for FC Tulsa in 2-1 loss to Sporting KC II

TULSA – It was heartbreak in Tulsa as FC Tulsa suffered its first home loss of the new era on Saturday night, falling 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City II. The out-of-group clash was full of energy and chances, but it was the visitors from Group E who made the better of them, opening the scoring in the 20’ through Fredlin Mompremier.
FC Tulsa bounced back, though, getting back on the front foot and pressuring the Sporting KC II defense. In the 39’, it was the captain, Ariel Martínez, who equalized for FC Tulsa with a beautiful chip over the goalkeeper Brooks Thompson. The match would go into the halftime break 1-1.
Play resumed in the second half with a high-energy, back-and-forth contest. Against the run of play, Sporting Kansas City II took the lead once again in the 55’ through Wilson Harris, as the young forward darted across the face of goal and met a low cross which he slapped into the back of the net.
FC Tulsa chased the equalizer for the remainder of the match, and it thought it found one, when in the 90’+5 Darío Suárez headed in a cross from a Vangjel Zguro free kick. The celebrations were halted though, after a delay, when the assistant referee decided the Cuban was offsides by mere millimeters.
The final whistle blew shortly afterwards, ending the match 2-1.
Here are three takeaways from the match.
1) Heartbreak for Tulsa – FC Tulsa thought surely it had grabbed a winner at the death, but the linesman’s flag was judge, jury, and executioner on this one.
2) Have to have a short memory – FC Tulsa must rebound quickly, as it’s back home on Wednesday night for a huge match against Group D cellar-dwellers Rio Grande Valley FC.
3) Huge matches upcoming – FC Tulsa remains just outside of a playoff spot but has a crucial stretch of matches upcoming. Wednesday against RGV FC is the first challenge, but in the next 15 days FC Tulsa also has matches against Austin Bold twice and OKC Energy FC. Those points will be absolutely crucial in securing a playoff spot in Group D.
