FC Tulsa looking to stay unbeaten in 2020 as it heads to Saint Louis FC

TULSA – As FC Tulsa heads off to Fenton, Missouri for its first match outside of Group D since the restart, the team is looking to build on what has been a historic start to the new era of FC Tulsa.
FC Tulsa has the most points from its opening three matches in club history, the best defensive record through three matches, and it sits as one of just four remaining unbeaten teams in the league. But according to Head Coach Michael Nsien, the team feels like it could be even better than that.
“I would have signed up for 5 points heading into the fourth game right away,” Nsien said, “although looking back I think we could have gotten even more points off the opening three games. Restarting the season, trying to get things back on track and find a rhythm, good cadence for training and rhythm for games.”
After the 19-day gap between the July 13 match at OKC Energy FC and the August 1 match at RGVFC, it’s been a much more manageable 7-day break, even if that match lasted nearly seven hours.
“I have tried to sleep well since then but at the same time I give credit to the players for a professional attitude,” Nsien said. “I remember in the locker room before the game when the times kept getting pushed back the players and their body language was still good, still enthusiastic and they fought all the way till 2:30 in the morning. As a coach that sets the right precedent and shows me that I have a good team with the right mentality.”
After the final whistle blew just after 2:30 a.m., FC Tulsa was on a flight at 8 a.m. the next morning with sights set on Saint Louis.
“We have had a few days to recover now,” defender Matt Sheldon said. “We got to catch up on sleep and we had a nice off day, so I just tried to sleep as much as possible and just get caught up. You are never going to be 100% recovered all the time so we just have to stay mentally focused and mentally tough and keep making a push.”
Sheldon, the former Saint Louis FC defender, will be making his first return to West Community Stadium since he last played there in 2017, only this time he’ll be lined up on the other side as his former club.
“It always adds a little bit extra motivation whenever you go back and play one of your old clubs,” Sheldon said. “But it is a great environment and it will be really exciting to play for all three points and have something on the line. They look good, they are a dynamic and we have been watching them a lot, scouting them. I think it will be a really good matchup.”
The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m. from West Community Stadium in Fenton, Mo. Fans can catch the match on My41 Tulsa on local television, on ESPN+ anywhere else in the United States, or on YouTube internationally. Fans in Tulsa are also invited to a watch party at ONEOK Field Saturday night, where there will be socially distanced seats, concessions, and an opportunity to cheer on FC Tulsa at ONEOK before the home opener August 12.

Scouting Saint Louis FC
While FC Tulsa has had a week of training to prepare for this one, Saint Louis FC is coming into Saturday’s match having played Sporting Kansas City II on Wednesday night.
With a slightly rotated squad playing Wednesday in preparation for Saturday, Saint Louis FC needed a late equalizer to nab a point at home against SKCII. USL Championship save leader Kyle Morton was on the bench Wednesday, but expect the keeper to start on Saturday against FC Tulsa. Saint Louis’ leading scorer, Tyler Blackwood, started and played 90 minutes.
Storylines to Watch
Out of group affair – FC Tulsa will play its first match since the restart against a team outside of Group D. Any points earned in Saturday’s match against Saint Louis FC will count towards the league table, both for FC Tulsa in Group D and for Saint Louis in Group E. The match is one of three that FC Tulsa will play outside Group D (Sporting Kansas City II on August 29, and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on October 3).
Heavyweight showdown – FC Tulsa’s first match as a team in a playoff position will come against another team with playoff hopes in Saint Louis FC. Both teams sit at second place in their respective groups, so points will be hotly contested as each are competing to solidify their status as playoff contenders.
Reunion in Fenton – Matt Sheldon and Eric Bird will both be among familiar company In 2014, FC Tulsa midfielder Eric Bird and Saint Louis FC midfielder Todd Wharton were dominant pieces to the University of Virginia’s College Cup winning team. The two went from college teammates to pro teammates at Rio Grande Valley FC from 2016-2018 but will meet on Saturday night at opposite ends of the pitch. FC Tulsa right back Matt Sheldon will play his first match against his former team after spending the 2017 season with Saint Louis FC. He made 13 appearances for Saint Louis and recorded his first career USL Championship assist with the club before a season-ending injury curtailed his campaign in August. It won’t be the first time he sees his former club, however, as FC Tulsa has played Saint Louis FC in each of the last two preseasons.
Where to Watch
The match will broadcast nationally on ESPN+, ESPN’s subscription-based platform, and internationally on the USL Championship YouTube channel. If fans would like to watch with other fans, FC Tulsa will be hosting a watch party at ONEOK field. Gates open at 6 p.m., an hour before the 7 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
Club representatives will be selling merchandise, so fans are welcome to come out and cheer on FC Tulsa as they take Saint Louis FC at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

FC Tulsa Harkens Back to NASL Roughnecks with Throwback Merch Line

TULSA – While FC Tulsa aims to be the present and future of pro soccer in Tulsa, it doesn’t want to forget about the glory days of the past. In the coming weeks, FC Tulsa will be releasing throwback merchandise featuring the logo of the Tulsa Roughnecks of the NASL who played from 1978-1984.
As part of brothers J.W., Ryan and Kyle Craft’s purchase of the franchise in August of 2019, the trio also acquired the rights to use the original Roughnecks marks from the late 70s and early 80s. In that era, the Roughnecks routinely drew over 25,000 fans a match and won the NASL championship, dubbed the Soccer Bowl, in 1983.
“From the beginning of our ownership of FC Tulsa, we wanted to be sure to include all Tulsa soccer fans, young and old in building this club,” said FC Tulsa owner Ryan Craft. “We hear all the time from fans about their memories of the old NASL franchise, and now we are excited to provide a line of merchandise that combines the past with the new present of FC Tulsa.”
The Roughnecks merch will include a T-shirt, hat, scarf and pennant and will begin dropping in August in the club’s online shop and on matchdays at ONEOK Field.
FC Tulsa will play its home opener at ONEOK on August 12 against San Antonio FC at 7 p.m. CT. Tickets to the match are available at www.fctulsa.com and start at just $8.

FC Tulsa Off to Best Start in Franchise History

TULSA – The best start in franchise history? Yep. Just add it to the growing list of records for FC Tulsa in 2020.
With results in each of the first three matches, including a win last Saturday night/Sunday morning at Rio Grande Valley FC, FC Tulsa surpasses any previous Roughnecks FC season in USL Championship history to start a campaign.
The five points earned this season via a win and two draws are also the most of any year, eclipsing 2019’s four points through three matches. As it stands today, FC Tulsa is in playoff position in Group D, sitting in second place with its five points. It has matches in hand on two of the three teams below it in the table, including rival OKC Energy FC who have the same number of points (five), but with two more matches played (both losses).
One of the biggest improvements of the 2020 campaign has been FC Tulsa’s defense. The Roughnecks of 2019 had one of the league’s most porous defenses, allowing 69 goals in 34 matches, an average of more than two goals a match allowed. This season, FC Tulsa has one of the league’s best defenses, tied for second-best in the USL Championship.
It is also the first time that Tulsa has allowed one goal or fewer in each of the team’s first three matches to start a season, a credit to goalkeeper Sean Lewis and his backline of defenders. You would have to go back more than two years to find the last time the Roughnecks had such a streak. It was May 19 – June 2 and despite allowing one goal in three matches during that span, the Roughnecks went 0-2-1.
One important note to all of the above stats so far in 2020 is that FC Tulsa is doing this damage on the road. As one of a very few teams to not play a match at home yet, FC Tulsa is accruing crucial road points that will make a difference at the end of 2020. The old saying goes “three points at home, one on the road,” and FC Tulsa is following that motto with five points through three road matches.
After Saturday’s road match at Saint Louis FC, eight of the following 12 matches will be at ONEOK Field, including the home opener on August 12. It will be the live pro sports debut in Tulsa and fans can purchase tickets, which start at just $8, at www.fctulsa.com.

Martnez Honored with Place on USL Championship Team of the Week

TAMPA – After sealing the first victory of the 2020 season for FC Tulsa with match-winning goal, captain Ariel Martínez was named to the USL Championship’s Week 6 Team of the Week Bench for his performance.
Deep into the Texas night, Martínez bagged his first goal of the season in the 74’ against Rio Grande Valley FC Toros, putting Tulsa ahead 2-1 for what eventually was the final tally of the match. While unconfirmed, the goal, which happened at 2:14 a.m. local time, is likely the latest-ever goal scored in USL Championship history.
Outside of his first goal of the season, Martínez was a force all night for Tulsa. “Cuban Messi,” as he is known back in his native Cuba, nearly added his first assist as well in the match, but the goal scored by Rodrigo da Costa was ruled offside. He also almost opened the scoring in the 12’ of the match with a shot destined for the far corner before RGVFC’s keeper parried the shot with a diving save.
Martínez is Tulsa’s first weekly honoree on the Team of the Week in 2020. FC Tulsa will be back in action on Saturday night at Saint Louis FC. Kickoff for the match airing locally on MyTV 41 is scheduled for 7 p.m.

FC Tulsa makes 6-spot jump in the power rankings

TULSA – FC Tulsa’s win on Saturday night/Sunday morning turned heads for too many reasons to count. Maybe it was the excitement of the first win of the FC Tulsa era, or maybe it was the fact that the final whistle blew around 2:30 a.m. after nearly five hours of weather delay.
No matter the reason, FC Tulsa’s best start to a season in franchise history has led to the second biggest jump of any club in the USL Championship’s Week 6 power rankings.
FC Tulsa jumped up from 26th to 20th, leapfrogging Austin Bold FC and OKC Energy FC in the power rankings in a similar fashion as it leapfrogged them in the Group D table.
This puts FC Tulsa in 2nd place in the group power rankings, behind San Antonio FC in sixth. Austin dropped to 23rd, OKC Energy dropped to 28th, and RGVFC dropped to 33rd.
FC Tulsa has five matches remaining against teams ahead of it in the power rankings (Saint Louis FC, San Antonio FC x3, and Sporting Kansas City II), and eight matches against teams below it (Austin Bold FC x3, RGVFC x2, OKC Energy FC x2, and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC).
