Forward Madison FC’s Don Smart has earned the Fan’s Choice Goal of the Week award for Week 13 of USL League One’s inaugural season. The veteran’s brilliant strike against North Texas SC last Saturday night in front of a more than 4,200 fans at Breese Stevens Field took top spot in the weekly online poll.
Smart has led the Flamingos offensively this season with four goals, and his brace against North Texas helped the side to a 4-1 victory against the current League One leaders. Smart controlled a through ball in the right channel, running into the penalty area before lashing home a finish into the top-right corner of the net that put Madison ahead for good and sent the crowd into wild celebrations.
Smart’s goal earned 50 percent of the poll conducted online at USLLeagueOne.com that concluded on Thursday lunchtime. Lansing Ignite FC’s Kevin Coiffic finished second on 37 percent for his well-taken volley against Orlando City B last Saturday night, while Chattanooga Red Wolves SC’s Steven Beattie finished third for his late game-winner against Greenville Triumph SC.
Forward Madison returns to USL League One play this Friday at 3 p.m., looking to hand Toronto FC II its first home loss of the season. The Flamingos sit in seventh place, four points behind TFC II, which currently occupies the last playoff spot.
