Forward Madison scored its second straight victory Wednesday night, defeating Union Omaha 1-0 thanks to Justin Sukow’s first professional goal. Sukow struck in the second half, keeping his composure in a one-on-one chance to give the Flamingos the win.

“Honestly I don’t know [what to say],” Sukow said. “I’ve scored goals before in club, high school and college, but scoring in front of The Flock, that was one of the best feelings in my life. I'll never forget it.”

While the visiting Owls took control of possession from kickoff, it was the Flamingos who spent most of the first half on the front foot. Aaron Molloy provided many of the highlights of the opening period as he took at least five different chances from set pieces and open play. On the other side, Union Omaha only generated a couple of shots that forced FMFC goalkeeper Phil Breno to leave his feet.

The second half went straight in favor of the ‘Mingos as Sukow, making his first professional start, scored in the 58th minute. With help from midfielder Audi Jepson’s through ball, Sukow found himself with a free chance in front of the goal and calmly slotted home to the far post.

It was Jepson who painted an apt picture of the game, summing up his contribution to the goal and highlighting Sukow’s efforts.

 “I just picked up the ball,” Jepson said. “It was quick, I saw Justin open up and make a great run and I’m just so happy for him to score his first professional goal on his professional debut. I’m just so happy for him.”

A late flurry of attempts came from Union Omaha, but a series of expert stops from Phil Breno and some timely offside calls kept Forward Madison’s net empty for the home clean sheet.

Forward Madison has now secured seven points in its first three games, its best start to a season yet. According to head coach Carl Craig, the Flamingos’ hard work has paid dividends in the team’s results.

“There’s confidence,” Craig said. “There are odd moments in every game, but I think there’s a great product. There’s a great camaraderie. This team has strengthened from last year. We went at [Omaha] and we won, and you can work with that.”

Up next for Forward Madison is a two-game road trip to South Georgia Tormenta on May 29 and Ft. Lauderdale CF on June 1. The Flamingos will then return to Breese Stevens Field on Sunday, June 6 for a rematch with Union Omaha.

Forward Madison FC has added four new menu items that will be served at every home game for the duration of the 2021 season. According to Executive Chef, Tristan Straub, the team is using this new menu as a way to spice up the traditional “stadium style” offerings while also taking into account the feedback given from fans in a roundtable at the end of the 2019 season. 

“After looking around at what some other soccer cultures are drawn to, we decided to bring some of those things to the 'Mingo fans at Breese," Straub said. "We are adding currywurst to our game menus as a nod to our friends in the German soccer culture; instant noodles with Tajin, lime, and Cholula as a tip-of-the-cap to the thriving Mexican soccer culture; a Tonkatsu-style taco, merging Hispanic and Japanese cultures in homage to the crowd favorite Jiro Barriga Toyama; and finally, a Nashville hot-style pulled pork sandwich with buttermilk ranch and bread & butter pickles on a sea salt and black pepper roll." 

In addition to these new concessions items, Straub also mentioned that the team will be  re-launching two Forward-branded beverage items. 

“The two Forward Madison items available this season will be Irruption Pale Ale – from our friends across the Avenue at Vintage Brewing – as well as 375mL cans of the deliciously refreshing Chateau Mingeau from Wollersheim Winery,” Straub said.

Forward Madison will operate the Wisco Mingo stand, the Taco Stand, the Festival Foods Grill, and the Sassy Cow Ice Cream Stand at the start of the season, with the hope to open its remaining stands over the course of the year.

Forward Madison FC is back at Breese Stevens Field on Wednesday, May 26 for a game against Union Omaha that figures to match up two teams with USL League One title aspirations. Gates will open at 6 p.m. and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. 

Neither the Flamingos nor the Owls have lost a game yet this year, meaning FMFC head coach Carl Craig will have to have his team at its best to take all three points. Craig said he plans to keep focusing on a strong attack in order to break down a stingy Omaha defense.

“We’ve had an awful lot of the ball and an awful lot of possession in the opponent's half, but we haven’t done enough with it,” Craig said. “We’ve got to find ways to be more dangerous with having more of the ball and having more of the shots. We’ve got to get more shots on target. I think a lot of our averages will be with us if we get more on target.”

Forward Madison is coming off a memorable home opener last Saturday, with Craig’s team earning a last-second 1-0 victory against North Carolina FC. It looked like the game would end in a draw until Derek Gebhard scored the winning goal in the 92nd minute by tapping in Jake Keegan's deflected pass, claiming the Flamingos’ first victory of the season.

Forward’s opponent, Union Omaha, is setting a momentous tone to the start of its sophomore season. After finishing second in the USL League One regular season table the previous year, the Owls have started off strong in 2021, holding a 3-0-1 record. Greg Hurst and Evan Conway have set the pace for Omaha’s fast start, scoring  two goals each thus far.

Last season, Forward Madison and Union Omaha drew both of their matchups (1-1 in Omaha and 0-0 in Wauwatosa), and this Wednesday marks the first time the two teams face off in 2021. 

Midfielder Eric Leonard, who has been with the Flamingos for all three of the team’s seasons, was the only Forward Madison player to score against Union Omaha in 2020. Leonard stayed on the bench last Saturday after suffering an injury in FMFC’s season opener, but has been involved in training in the lead-up to the Omaha match.

“One of the things I think we’re building on is that we’re even more dangerous off of set pieces,” said Leonard, whose goal against the Owls in 2020 came off a free kick. “We know that Omaha is a good team, but if we can continue to exploit situations off our set pieces like you saw in the game last weekend and even in our first game, we can have a lot of chances. It’s now about getting into the final third of those set pieces and finishing.”

Following Wednesday’s match, the Flamingos will hit the road for away games against South Georgia Tormenta FC on Saturday, May 29, and Fort Lauderdale CF on Tuesday, June 1.

Forward Madison will begin to move closer to full capacity at home games following new guidance from Public Health Madison & Dane County, the team announced Thursday. The Flamingos played their home opener in front of a significantly reduced crowd on May 15, but will have nearly all seats at Breese Stevens Field available by June 12.

Single-game tickets will go on sale Thursday, May 27 at 10 a.m. for all Forward Madison home games for the rest of the 2021 season, starting with the team’s June 12 match. 

Below is a timeline for Forward Madison’s upcoming home games:

• May 26 vs Union Omaha: Restrictions are still in place. Forward Madison will offer both socially distant and vaccinated sections, as it did with its home opener.

• June 2: Public Health Madison & Dane County’s last order expires.

• June 6 vs Union Omaha: Fans that have been seated or have purchased tickets will remain in their assigned seats. Forward Madison has opened several non-distanced sections that anyone, regardless of vaccination status, can sit in.

• June 12 vs Richmond Kickers: Breese Stevens Field will return close to full capacity with a limited number of socially distant seats. Season ticket holders will return to their original assigned seat and all sections of the stadium will be open.

The first half was one-way traffic for the Flamingos as the fans roared them on in their regular season return to Breese Stevens Field, the first game the team had played in Madison in 601 days. Carl Craig’s men only managed two shots on target, though, through defenders Connor Tobin and Ronaldo Lomeli.

The captain Tobin expressed the emotion of the return to Breese Stevens Field after the team spent last year playing home games in Wauwatosa. 

“Coming back here, you couldn’t ask for a match that was more indicative of what we were going through during the pandemic,” Tobin said. “The whole game, it doesn’t feel like it’s coming together, you can’t overcome it, you can’t overcome it. You know what, when we’re together, players and supporters that stay together, you find a way to persevere.”

We are excited for Forward Madison soccer to return to Breese Stevens Field in 2021! Our first priority is fan and player safety, so in advance of the match, we wanted to remind you of several stadium rules:

1. Masks are required at all times in common spaces for guests over the age of five, except for those in vaccinated sections. You must wear your mask when you are outside of a vaccinated section and not in your seat.

2. Every ticket in the stadium other than those in vaccinated sections has an assigned seat. Our seating map is designed to socially distance every group in the facility, so please sit in your assigned seat. If your seat is not socially distanced, please notify an usher and we will relocate your party. 

3. The entire seating area, restroom, and common areas will be sanitized prior to your arrival and the restrooms will be cleaned throughout the game. 

4. We have moved to a cashless environment, so please come with a credit card, debit card or gift card, if you choose to purchase food, beverage, or merchandise. If you only have cash, you can purchase a gift card at the team store for use throughout the night. 

5. Direct fan and player interaction is not currently allowed under USL League One protocols. Please keep at least six feet of distance between yourself and players, coaches, and referees. 

6. Please perform a health self-evaluation before coming to the stadium. If you are feeling unwell at all, stay home. We are happy to transfer your ticket to another home game this season.

Forward Madison FC will host its first regular season game at Breese Stevens Field in 601 days this Saturday, facing off against USL League One newcomers North Carolina FC. Gates will open at 6 p.m. CT and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT. 

The Flamingos are currently ninth in the USL League One after drawing their opening match 1-1 against FC Tucson last week. The game was off to a fairly even start until Deri Corfe of FC Tucson scored the opening goal in the 51st minute, but new signing and co-captain Jake Keegan evened out the match for the Flamingos with his goal in the 67th minute. 

Going into Saturday’s match, head coach Carl Craig said he is hoping for the offense to create more goal-scoring opportunities. 

“I thought we were a little trigger happy and I think we need to show a little bit more patience,” Craig said. “That will allow us to get more players up the field so we can create better opportunities, rather than get up to the penalty area and blaze away.”

The Flamingos have not played a home match at Breese since September 22, 2019, which Craig said has contributed to a sense of anticipation amongst the team. 

“There’s obvious excitement, but it's kind of calm, which is good,” Craig said. “I think there’s genuine, positive anticipation because a number of us in part came here for the atmosphere that this community builds in this football stadium.”

Looking at Forward Madison’s competitor, North Carolina FC sits 12th in the USL League One table after dropping their first match 2-1 against Greenville Triumph SC. 

Saturday’s matchup will mark the first time these two teams have ever played against each other, as well as a reunion of sorts for defender Connor Tobin, who played for NCFC from 2014-18. North Carolina FC is new to USL League One this year after dropping down from the USL Championship, where it had played sinc 2018. 

The Flamingos will be back at Breese following Saturday’s game, with a matchup against Union Omaha set for Wednesday, May 26.
