Forward Madison found joy in its return to Breese Stevens, winning 4-0 over Milwaukee Bavarians SC in its final preseason game. Saturday’s game was the Flamingos’ first match in Madison since 2019, and the return was made even sweeter by a true bevy of goals.

“There were some very good moments," head coach Carl Craig said. "I experimented a little in the first half and it didn’t quite go to plan, so we went and made a few adjustments at halftime. Our shape was better, our structure was better and obviously we played better football.”

After dominating the possession early in the match, midfielder Aaron Molloy opened the scoring with a low drive to the far post in the 12th minute off an assist from Tyler Allen. Despite only arriving in Madison last week, the Irishman was very effective, spending the half searching for space in the middle and finding himself in the center of the box and open for the shot.

"I was told great things about Breese Stevens (Field), so to get a goal on my debut was fantastic," Molloy said. "A big part of it was the fans. They made it even better for us, made the four-nil even sweeter that it was for them.”

Soon after, defender Gustavo Fernandes doubled the lead in the 24th minute with a diving header courtesy of Michael Vang’s out-swinging corner. Aside from Bavarians’ Logan Andryk striking the post in the 31st minute, most of the action was one-way in favor of the Flamingos.

The second half began with better play from the Bavarian visitors, but it was striker Jake Keegan who stole the show in the 70th minute. After taking on Audi Jepson’s feed, Keegan cut onto his right foot and curled home a strike to the far post from the edge of the box.

Derek Gebhard grabbed the fourth in the 79th minute after getting fouled inside the box and stepping up to calmly slot home his penalty attempt.

We are excited for Forward Madison soccer to return to Breese Stevens Field in 2021! Our first priority is fan and player safety. In advance of the match, we wanted to remind you of several stadium rules:

1. Masks are required at all times in the stadium for guests over the age of five. You are only permitted to remove your mask when you are seated in your socially distanced seat and consuming a food or beverage. Please help us create a safe environment and wear your mask at all other times. 

2. Every ticket in the stadium has an assigned seat and the seating map is designed to socially distance every group in the facility. Please sit in your assigned seat. If your seat is not socially distanced, please notify an usher and we will relocate your party. 

3. The entire seating area, restroom, and common areas will be sanitized prior to your arrival and the restrooms will be cleaned throughout the game. 

4. We have moved to a cashless environment, so please come with a credit card, debit card or gift card, if you choose to purchase food, beverage, or merchandise. If you only have cash, you can purchase a gift card at the team store for use throughout the night. 

5. There cannot currently be direct fan and player interaction. Unfortunately, this means no autographs or high-fives after the match. Please keep at least 10 feet of distance between yourself and players, coaches, and referees. 

6. Please perform a health self-evaluation before coming to the stadium. If you are feeling unwell at all, please stay home. We are happy to transfer your ticket to another home game this season.

Forward Madison FC is exploring the possibility of adding several vaccinated sections to its limited-capacity crowds for the team’s upcoming home games on May 15, May 26 and June 6, in accordance with new regulations from Public Health Madison & Dane County.

Forward Madison has begun the process of surveying season ticket holders and fans to gauge interest in the creation of sections where fully-vaccinated guests can gather together without needing to wear masks or distance. Forward Madison understands that not all age groups and categories of people will obtain a vaccination, and will thus continue to offer socially-distanced seating in all other parts of the stadium for fans who are not vaccinated or do not wish to sit in the vaccinated sections.

For the first time since late 2019, fans in the vaccinated sections of Breese Stevens Field would have the opportunity to cheer, sing and enjoy all the revelry of Forward Madison games without needing to maintain a physical distance. Upon leaving the section, those fans would still be required to wear a mask and keep six feet apart from other guests.

To secure a seat in this area, fans would be required to provide documentation showing that at least two weeks have passed since their final vaccination dose. Per Public Health Madison & Dane County regulations, there would be no exception in that rule for children.

Forward Madison is committed to creating a welcoming environment at its games for all fans and looks forward to being part of the Madison community’s return to normal in 2021.

Forward Madison FC has signed 26-year-old midfielder Audi Jepson, adding a local presence to its 2021 roster. Jepson, who grew up minutes from Lambeau Field in Green Bay, previously spent two seasons with Saint Louis FC in the USL Championship.

“I’m just excited to be here in Madison, in my home state, and to get the chance to play professionally here,” Jepson said. “Growing up in Wisconsin and playing club, high school, collegiate, and now professional soccer here, it’s a phenomenal opportunity.”

Jepson caught the eye of Forward Madison’s coaching staff during the team’s invite combine this winter. According to head coach Carl Craig, Jepson will feature primarily as a box-to-box midfielder, but can operate in a number of other positions as the Flamingos’ utility man.

“The more and more we see of Audi, the more we see nuanced movements and qualities you’d expect out of a much more experienced player,” Craig said. “It’s also really nice to sign a fellow who has grown up here. We want to show the community in the state of Wisconsin that this is their football club, so I think it’s outstanding when we can have Wisconsin players here”

Jepson has already made a name for himself in the world of Wisconsin soccer, winning plaudits as the Horizon League’s Offensive Player of the Year for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2017. Jepson signed with Saint Louis FC in 2018 and played there for two years, scoring his first professional goal in April 2019 with a long-range effort that kissed the underside of the bar.

Although a meniscus injury prevented him from competing in 2020, Jepson came back home for a trial with Forward Madison in 2021, where he impressed the Flamingos’ coaches with his ability to adapt to different situations.

“As a team, we want to bring a championship to Madison,” Jepson said. “I know the fans here are very passionate, so hopefully things start settling down and we can have them here packing Breese this season.”

Jepson’s signing will be confirmed pending league and federation approval.

"Regardless of it being a friendly, football games are there to be won," Craig said. "We showed the right attitude to win it."

Craig started the game with a lineup that included nine rostered players and two trialists. The Flamingos came close on several attempts in the early stages, with Noah Fuson missing over the bar in the 22nd minute and seeing a close-range shot blocked in the 39th minute.

The breakthrough finally came courtesy of Vang in the 40th minute. Striker Jake Keegan started the play at the top of the 18-yard box, springing Fuson into space with a through ball onto the left flank. Fuson took a low show that Kansas City's goalkeeper pushed away, but Vang ran through at the far post to push home the rebound.

Vang excelled for the Flamingos in 2020, leading the team in goals and earning the team's Dairyland MVP award.

Craig made several changes during the second half, bringing multiple trialists into the game. Kansas City took the initiative, but the 'Mingo defense held strong against repeated attacks.

Even against the run of play, Forward Madison still created several second-half chances, with Heath Martin in particular forcing a clearance off the line in the 77th minute.
