Dear Forward Madison Fans,

I want to start by thanking you for your continued support during a trying 2020 season that will undoubtedly be unlike any other in the history of Forward Madison FC. I want to recognize the players and coaches for taking these challenges head on and putting forth their best efforts as they traveled to the Wisconsin Dells daily for practice and ventured to Wauwatosa for “home matches” at Hart Park. Furthermore, I want to recognize their strict adherence to the USL League One COVID-19 protocols. 

I am writing to inform you that as of this morning, FMFC has mutually agreed to part ways with Technical Director and Head Coach, Daryl Shore. Daryl’s contract was up after the end of the 2020 season. We would like to thank Daryl for his effort in getting this Club off the ground and leading us to the 2019 USL League One Playoffs. He is a true professional and we wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.

As of this morning, we have launched an international search to find the new leader of our Club. We are seeking a diverse pool of candidates and plan to move methodically, but swiftly. Like any major decision Forward Madison makes, our supporters will have a place in the process. We are committed to hiring a candidate that understands and embraces the passion of our fans.

While our Club faced challenges to undertake a 2020 season that was unique in the USL system, the results of the 2020 season fell short of the expectations of our ownership, our staff and our fans. We have accomplished so much together as a Forward Madison community in the first two seasons. However, we have yet to bring a USL League One championship to our great fans in Madison and beyond. We are committed to delivering a product on the field that matches the passion of our amazing fan base.

We appreciate you sticking with us over these past two years in Madison and Milwaukee, in the snow and the sun and in the wins and the losses. In two years we have been amazingly fortunate to have built a soccer community together that has become known across the soccer world. Part of our ethos is being a leader in our field and holding ourselves to a high standard. The process of getting our on-field product up to the standard we all expect starts now. We are confident, with your continued support, better days are ahead for Forward Madison FC.

Forward Madison closed out its season in style on Saturday, defeating New England Revolution II thanks to a comeback 2-1 victory at Hart Park. Noah Fuson scored his first professional goal to equalize late on before Jiro Barriga Toyama struck from distance to clinch the game.

According to team captain Connor Tobin, it was a fitting end to a difficult year.

“We weren’t good for 75 minutes, but we finished the game with a bunch of guys that continued to work through adversity,” Tobin said. “It shows that we do have a group of guys in the locker room that are, I think, resilient. We’ve got to build on that as a group if we’re going to be successful.”

A back-and-forth first half went New England’s way after Justin Rennicks gave the visitors the lead by beating the offside trap before scoring in the 30th minute. Rennicks’ goal meant that Forward Madison Chris Brady finishes second in the race for the USL League One Golden Glove, just behind Greenville’s Dallas Jaye. 

On the other end of the pitch Paulo Junior rang the bar on multiple occasions, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Head Coach Daryl Shore changed things up in the second half, bringing on Allan Rodriguez at halftime and Noah Fuson soon after the break. Shore also gave Madison native Carl Schneider his 2020 debut with a 79th minute substitution.

For much of the second half, though, it seemed no change would make a difference. But with the game nearly done and dusted, Forward Madison found a way back. 

The first strike came in the 81st minute courtesy of Noah Fuson, marking the forward’s first professional goal. Fuson cut through the defensive line to receive a threaded ball from Louis Bennett, then smashed home with his right foot to tie the game.

For Fuson, it was a moment he’d waited his whole life for.

“It meant a lot to get my first one here in front of the fans in the last game of the season and help us get a 2-1 win,” Fuson said. “It feels really good to end the season on a highlight. It gives me a lot of motivation and just going into the offseason and into next season to continue to get better and score more goals.” 

The winning goal came just three minutes later courtesy of Jiro Barriga Toyama, who scored from long range to put the Flamingos in the lead for good. Jiro found himself in space nearly 30 yards out from goal, then tore a rocket off the post and into the net for a spectacular finish for what may have been the game of the season.

“My teammates told me throughout the season, ‘You’ve got to take a shot,’” Barriga Toyama said. “This was the last game, I was like, ‘I’ve got to take a shot,’ and that was a good hit. To be honest, I should have done it sooner.”

Forward Madison finishes the season in 7th place following Saturday’s success.

The late victory brought Flamingo fans to their feet, and fans and players shared a moment after the game, singing “Oh, Madison” as the final whistle blew.

For Shore, though, this season’s end is just another beginning.

“Though it was a great finish to a tough season, for me personally I don’t think it was good enough,” Shore said. “We’ve got to figure out ways to get better, and hopefully we’ll have those opportunities to do that. Again, we showed what our character is all about and what we’re trying to build. The future for this club, once we get the city on board with us being able to do this the right way, I think the future is really bright for our club.”

All tickets must be bought online. There will be no box office or will call at the stadium.

We are excited to host you for Forward Madison soccer in 2020 at Hart Park. Our first priority is fan and player safety. In advance of the match, we wanted to remind you of several stadium rules:

1. Masks are required at all times in the stadium for guests over the age of five. You are only permitted to remove your mask when you are seated in your socially distanced seat and consuming a food or beverage. Please help us create a safe environment and wear your mask at all other times. 

2. Every ticket in the stadium has an assigned seat and the seating map is designed to socially distance every group in the facility. Please sit in your assigned seat. If your seat is not socially distanced, please notify an usher and we will relocate your party. 

3. The entire seating area, restroom, and common areas will be sanitized prior to your arrival and the restrooms will be cleaned every 30 minutes throughout the night. 

4. We have moved to a cashless environment, so please come with a credit card, debit card or gift card, if you choose to purchase food, beverage, or merchandise. If you only have cash, you can purchase a gift card at the team store for use throughout the night. 

5. There will be no fan and player interaction allowed this season. Unfortunately, this means no autographs or high-fives after the match. Please keep at least 10 feet of distance between yourself and players, coaches, and referees. 

6. Please perform a health self-evaluation before coming to the stadium. If you are feeling unwell at all, please stay home. We are happy to transfer your ticket to another home game this season.

Thank you in advance for your help in creating a safe environment for yourself, our guests, players, and staff. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Forward Madison will have a chance to end its 2020 on a high note Saturday, as the team hosts New England Revolution II in its season finale at Hart Park. The Flamingos can no longer qualify for the USL League One Final, but for Head Coach Daryl Shore, they still have a reputation to uphold.

“This is a time for our pride and our character to show,” Shore said on Behind the Feathers this week. “We want to win this game. The players want to win the game. We want to win the game for this organization and we want to win this game for our fans.”

 Forward Madison currently sits 9th in the League One standings, but could potentially move up to as high as 6th with a win. The Flamingos also stand to finish the year with a .500 record if they can claim victory.

According to Shore, it’s one of the first steps in getting the club back on track after missing the postseason. 

“We  look forward to first closing this season off with a win,” Shore said. “After that (we’ll) make sure the roster is formulated for 2021 to where we get back to the Forward Madison ways of being in the playoffs and competing for a championship.”

After an especially exhausting season, though, in which FMFC’s players had to travel hours for both practices and games, the wear and tear is finally beginning to show. Forward’s unavailable list for Saturday includes Jalen Crisler, Christian Diaz, Brandon Eaton, Gustavo Fernandes, and Alex Monis. Shore also listed Jamael Cox, Eric Leonard, and Connor Tobin as questionable. 

“We’re like a MASH unit right now,” Shore said. “We’re going to have 11 guys to start the game and we’re going to have seven reverses who will help us close the game out. We’re going to go down swinging, that’s for sure.”

One storyline for Saturday will be goalkeeper Chris Brady’s chase for the USL League One Golden Glove Award. Brady currently holds a 0.71 Goals Against Average, just behind league leader Dallas Jaye’s 0.67. Jaye’s Greenville Triumph will kick off at Orlando City B earlier in the day, meaning Brady will already know what he has to do to earn the award.

New England Revolution II, meanwhile, has also already been eliminated from contention for the USL League One Final. The Revolution are eighth in League One, level on points with the Flamingos but ahead on a tiebreaker.

New England has been in good form recently, winning four of its six past games, but was battered 4-0 by South Georgia Tormenta on Wednesday. Nicolas Firmino has been the Revolution’s standout player, leading the team in goals (4) and co-leading in assists (2).

Forward Madison won its only previous meeting with New England in convincing fashion, claiming a 4-0 victory on the road on September 4.

According to Shore, Saturday’s match represents a chance to finish things on a positive.

“There’s nothing better than winning your last game,” Shore said. “It’s kind of like golf, where you’re only as good as your last hole. When you par or birdie 18, you’re ready to go out and play again.”

Forward’s unavailable list for Saturday includes Jalen Crisler, Christian Diaz, Brandon Eaton, Gustavo Fernandes, and Alex Monis. Shore also listed Jamael Cox, Eric Leonard, and Connor Tobin as questionable. 

“We’re like a MASH unit right now,” Shore said. “We’re going to have 11 guys to start the game and we’re going to have seven reverses who will help us close the game out. We’re going to go down swinging, that’s for sure.”

One storyline for Saturday will be goalkeeper Chris Brady’s chase for the USL League One Golden Glove Award. Brady currently holds a 0.71 Goals Against Average, just behind league leader Dallas Jaye’s 0.67. Jaye’s Greenville Triumph will kick off at Orlando City B earlier in the day, meaning Brady will already know what he has to do to earn the award.

New England Revolution II, meanwhile, has also already been eliminated from contention for the USL League One Final. The Revolution are eighth in League One, level on points with the Flamingos but ahead on a tiebreaker.

New England has been in good form recently, winning four of its six past games, but was battered 4-0 by South Georgia Tormenta on Wednesday. Nicolas Firmino has been the Revolution’s standout player, leading the team in goals (4) and co-leading in assists (2).

Forward Madison won its only previous meeting with New England in convincing fashion, claiming a 4-0 victory on the road on September 4.

According to Shore, Saturday’s match represents a chance to finish things on a positive.

“There’s nothing better than winning your last game,” Shore said. “It’s kind of like golf, where you’re only as good as your last hole. When you par or birdie 18, you’re ready to go out and play again.”

Forward Madison found itself on the end of a last-second defeat on Wednesday, falling 1-0 to North Texas SC at Hart Park. North Texas were awarded a controversial penalty kick in the final seconds, and sunk the Flamingos in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

“I’m proud of the way our guys played and battled,” Head Coach Daryl Shore said. “I’m disappointed for our guys because they played well. They tried hard.”

The first half began and ended with high pressure from North Texas, but a burst of rain in the middle made the Hart Park pitch slippery and resulted in more chances for the Flamingos, who logged shots through Wojciech Wojcik and Don Smart. On the other end, Arturo Rodriguez had a big chance from a free kick, but it was caught by Chris Brady in the 42nd minute.

Defender Gustavo Fernandes, who started at fullback, was forced off early after pulling a hamstring.

“When you have to make an early sub like that, it’s difficult,” Shore said. “We had a good start to the game. We had the game in the half of the field that we wanted it in, and yeah, you’ve just got to make those changes when those injuries happen.”

Brady again came up big for FMFC in the second half, stopping a hard shot from North Texas in the 76th minute. According to Brady, the Flamingos’ good defense represented a team effort.

“Throughout the whole game the main goal defensively was communication, keeping the boys in front of me, compact, organized and making sure they're in the right spots to make good plays,” Brady said. “Second half, yeah, they put us under more pressure, but we dealt with it well.”

In the end, though, it wasn’t to be for the Flamingos. Jiro Barriga Toyama fouled North Texas’ Rodriguez on the edge of the penalty area in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Although the referee initially awarded a free kick, the decision was changed to a penalty several minutes later.

Rodriguez took the chance, scoring the penalty and winning the game in the 99th minute.

“After how hard we fought, for something like that to happen just sucks,” Brady said. “We really wanted to get three points today and hopefully three points Saturday, but it just sucks because we put everything forward. For it to end like that is unfortunate.”

The Flamingos are already eliminated from contention for the USL League One Final and remain 9th place in the league standings.

Following Wednesday’s loss, Forward Madison will host its season finale on Saturday, Oct. 24, taking on New England Revolution II at 7 p.m. at Hart Park.

We are excited to host you for Forward Madison soccer in 2020 at Hart Park. Our first priority is fan and player safety. In advance of the match, we wanted to remind you of several stadium rules:

1. Masks are required at all times in the stadium for guests over the age of five. You are only permitted to remove your mask when you are seated in your socially distanced seat and consuming a food or beverage. Please help us create a safe environment and wear your mask at all other times. 

2. Every ticket in the stadium has an assigned seat and the seating map is designed to socially distance every group in the facility. Please sit in your assigned seat. If your seat is not socially distanced, please notify an usher and we will relocate your party. 

3. The entire seating area, restroom, and common areas will be sanitized prior to your arrival and the restrooms will be cleaned every 30 minutes throughout the night. 

4. We have moved to a cashless environment, so please come with a credit card, debit card or gift card, if you choose to purchase food, beverage, or merchandise. If you only have cash, you can purchase a gift card at the team store for use throughout the night. 

5. There will be no fan and player interaction allowed this season. Unfortunately, this means no autographs or high-fives after the match. Please keep at least 10 feet of distance between yourself and players, coaches, and referees. 

6. Please perform a health self-evaluation before coming to the stadium. If you are feeling unwell at all, please stay home. We are happy to transfer your ticket to another home game this season.

When Forward Madison returns to Hart Park this Wednesday, it will – for this first time in club history – not have a postseason spot to play for. The Flamingos still have two matches to go in 2020, but were eliminated from contention for the USL League One final last week.

For some teams, that might be reason enough to fold their cards. But for Head Coach Daryl Shore and Forward Madison, there’s still plenty to play for. Speaking on Behind the Feathers, Shore noted that FMFC needs at least four points to secure a winning record this season.

 “This has been a tough year: We haven’t been able to play at Breese [and] we haven’t been able to practice in Madison,” Shore said. “But we still know the support that we get from our ownership group, the front office, the Flock and all of our other fans. So we feel that it’s important to finish the season strong and get six points in these last two games.”

The Flamingos are coming off a 1-1 comeback draw in Chattanooga last Saturday. Michael Vang scored the equalizer in the 69th minute, making him the team’s sole goalscoring leader, while Chris Brady preserved the point with a kick-save in the 80th minute.

 If Brady starts Forward Madison’s last two games, he would qualify for League One’s Golden Glove rankings. Brady currently holds a 75% save success rate, on par with league leader Dallas Jaye of Greenville Triumph SC. 

 Coming off a grueling three-game road trip, though, the Flamingos are dealing with more than their fair share of bumps and bruises. According to Shore, Jamael Cox, Jalen Crisler, Brandon Eaton and Alex Monis will all miss Wednesday’s match, while others could be game-time decisions.

“We still are trying to assess it,” Shore said. “We feel like we’ve got guys that are ready to play. Everybody knows on this team you have to be ready, and you can be put into the lineup at any time.”

 North Texas SC, meanwhile, is still in the playoff hunt, but would be eliminated with a draw or a loss. FC Dallas’ affiliate team has engineered a remarkable late-season turnaround, winning three of its last four games to move up to fifth place in the standings.

 The team’s resurgence has been spearheaded by Ronaldo Damus, the 2019 USL League One Golden Boot winner. Damus leads North Texas in both goals (5) and assists (3), while last year’s League One MVP Arturo Rodriguez has added to the attack since his mid-season return from a USL Championship loan deal.

Forward Madison has a long history with North Texas SC, having played Wednesday’s opponent more times than any other team in the club’s existence. The Flamingos lost to North Texas in the 2019 playoffs, but have beaten them on both occasions in Wisconsin – including a memorable 4-1 win last June.

FMFC lost its only game thus far against North Texas in 2020, though, falling 2-1 in its season opener. For Shore, the rematch means a lot.

“We want to win the game,” Shore said. “We want to give our fans something to be proud of.”
