Forward Madison came from behind to draw 1-1 at Chattanooga Red Wolves on Saturday, but despite the result, now hang on the threshold of postseason elimination. Michael Vang scored a superb second half goal, while Chris Brady kept FMFC alive with a late kick save.

Without a win, though, the Flamingos’ playoff hopes hang by a thread. FMFC will be eliminated from contention for the USL League One Final if the Richmond Kickers win or draw later today.

Chattanooga took the lead from the penalty spot in the 8th minute thanks to forward Greg Hurst, whose seventh strike of the season puts him third in the League One goalscoring charts. FMFFC center back Gustavo Fernandes, filling in for the suspended Connor Tobin, was whistled for a foul in the 18-yard box, and Hurst slotted the ensuing penalty kick.

Jamael Cox came close to equalizing for the Flamingos in the 15th minute, but his close-range effort was knocked down by Chattanooga goalkeeper Alex Mangels. 

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Head Coach Daryl Shore made a double substitution, bringing on midfielder Vang and forward Paulo Júnior to kickstart the attack.

In due time, Shore’s change paid off. Forward Madison equalized in the 69th minute through Vang, with the assist coming from Paulo. Vang, who now leads the Flamingos with four goals in 2020, nutmegged a defender before curling a beautiful shot into the far corner.

Chattanooga could have re-taken the lead in the 80th minute, through Hurst, but goalkeeper Chris Brady made an excellent stop. Hurst had gone past the back line and was one-on-one with Brady, who stretched out his leg to kick the shot away and preserve the score at 1-1.

Following Saturday’s game, Forward Madison will return to Hart Park for its final two matches of the season, hosting North Texas SC on Wednesday, Oct. 21 and New England Revolution II on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Forward Madison will enter the final three-game stretch of its sophomore season Saturday afternoon when it takes on Chattanooga Red Wolves SC in a lunchtime kickoff. FMFC currently sits in eighth place, six points out from a spot in the USL League One Final and thus in desperate need of a win to stave off potential elimination.

The Flamingos inched closer to the postseason on Wednesday, but couldn’t pick up a full three points during a 2-2 come-from-behind draw at Fort Lauderdale CF. FMFC captain Connor Tobin was shown a red card during the final minutes of that match, meaning he will be suspended for Saturday’s game.

That suspension will leave Head Coach Daryl Shore with a hole to fill at center back, where Tobin has reliably partnered with Josiah Trimmingham. The prime candidates to fill the spot include Jalen Crisler, who has only played once since an early-season injury; Gustavo Fernandes, who has shown versatility in multiple positions; and Eric Leonard, who has mainly served as a defensive midfielder.

 The Flamingos will also have to deal with adjusting to fatigue after just two days rest, with another game next Wednesday looming on the horizon. With three points a virtual necessity to stay in the postseason race, though, FMFC needs as strong a lineup as possible.

Ultimately, though, Shore’s team will be happy with any scenario that allows them to pick up a win. The Flamingos are unbeaten in four straight games, but have drawn their last three, leaving much-needed points on the table during the home stretch.

On the other side, Chattanooga Red Wolves enter Saturday’s game one point ahead of Forward Madison in the League One standings. The Red Wolves had climbed to as high as second place, but three straight losses have sent their playoff hopes tumbling.

Another name to look out for could be Jerome Kiesewetter, the former U.S. Men’s National Team player who is on loan at Fort Lauderdale from parent club Inter Miami. 

Forward Madison still has four matches to play in the 2020 regular season. Following Wednesday’s game, the Flamingos will travel to Tennessee to take on Chattanooga Red Wolves on Saturday, Oct. 17 at noon C.T.

Forward Madison FC drew 0-0 at home for a second straight week on Sunday, failing to break the deadlock against Union Omaha. The result means the Flamingos still haven’t lost a home game this year, but remain seven points away from a spot in the USL League One Final. 

According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, his team gave it their all to go for the win – even throwing center back Josiah Trimmingham up to the front line during the final minutes of the match.

“We put everything into the game,” Shore said. “It’s unfortunate, because now we need a lot of help. We’re still in it. Mathematically we’re not out of it, and if we get a couple of results to go our way and win out then there’s still a chance. I can’t really fault the guys for the effort.”

The first half featured a bevy of chances for the Flamingos, with J.C. Banks leading the line with two shots. Banks, who had been out of the starting 11 for the past two games, played on the right wing for much of the match. 

“It felt good to get a full 90 [minutes],” Banks said. “It’s frustrating not to get a goal out of that game, but we’ve got to be even more dangerous. I don’t think we were dangerous enough so we’ve got to do that the next couple of games. We need to win out now.” 

The second half had its moments, but the closest chance on goal came in the final seconds. Omaha’s Illal Osumann put a header on goal in the 92nd minute, but defender Gustavo Fernandes saved the Flamingos by heading the effort off the goal line.

Fernandes, who had only just entered the game as a substitute, said it was a natural reaction.

“Coach always tells us to be ready for when our number is called, and when your number is called you go in and do the best you can,” Fernandes said. “I was always taught from a young age that if you can’t win the first ball, just go to the goal line and see if you can make a play. It came right to me so I had to clear it out.”

With the draw, Forward Madison stays in eighth place. With four matches left to go, though, FMFC has more games in hand than any other team in League One.

For Shore, the Flamingos might just need a bit of luck.

“We just haven’t gotten a break in that last couple of games,” Shore said. “If you get that one little break and you score the goal, then the game changes and maybe it opens up a little bit. We’ve just got to find a way to get that one chance, to get one goal.”

Following Sunday’s draw, Forward Madison will hit the road to take on Fort Lauderdale CF on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. CT.

1. Masks are required at all times in the stadium for guests over the age of five. You are only permitted to remove your mask when you are seated in your socially distanced seat and consuming a food or beverage. Please help us create a safe environment and wear your mask at all other times. 

2. Every ticket in the stadium has an assigned seat and the seating map is designed to socially distance every group in the facility. Please sit in your assigned seat. If your seat is not socially distanced, please notify an usher and we will relocate your party. 

3. The entire seating area, restroom, and common areas will be sanitized prior to your arrival and the restrooms will be cleaned every 30 minutes throughout the night. 

4. We have moved to a cashless environment, so please come with a credit card, debit card or gift card, if you choose to purchase food, beverage, or merchandise. If you only have cash, you can purchase a gift card at the team store for use throughout the night. 

5. There will be no fan and player interaction allowed this season. Unfortunately, this means no autographs or high-fives after the match. Please keep at least 10 feet of distance between yourself and players, coaches, and referees. 

6. Please perform a health self-evaluation before coming to the stadium. If you are feeling unwell at all, please stay home. We are happy to transfer your ticket to another home game this season.

Facing Union Omaha this Sunday, the time is nigh for a final ascent. Omaha, which currently sits in third place, is seven points ahead of Forward Madison with two more games played.

It’s a precarious position for the Flamingos, which failed to capitalize on 19 shots in a 0-0 draw against FC Tucson last week. Still, it wasn’t all bad news for Daryl Shore’s men, who extended their unbeaten record at Hart Park to five games. 

Sunday’s match represents the first of five matches in 13 days for Forward Madison, and will thus provide a challenge in terms of both mental and physical fatigue. Head Coach Shore may rely on the full depth of his squad, which has been enriched this year by the successful midseason additions of forward Noah Fuson and midfielder Fito Ovalle.

On the other hand, Sunday’s opponents, Union Omaha, won’t have to face the same issues. The Owls have had a successful first season on the field, and with three games left on the calendar, are just one point behind second-place Richmond Kickers.

Omaha is riding a two-game winning streak entering Sunday’s match, including a 3-0 thumping of South Georgia Tormenta FC on October 3. Evan Conway and Ethan Vanacore-Decker lead the League One debutants with four and three goals respectively, while goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu has kept four clean sheets. 

The two teams figure to match up differently from their first contest on Aug. 19, when Forward Madison scraped out a 1-1 draw in Papillion, Nebraska. That match featured a memorable first professional goal for Eric Leonard, with the Flamingos holding onto a point after Josiah Trimmingham saw red with minutes to play.

This time around, though, FMFC has home-field advantage, not to mention a wider pitch to work with compared to Werner Park, the converted baseball field that Union Omaha calls home. 

Following Sunday’s match, Forward Madison will hit the road to take on Fort Lauderdale CF on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. CT.

The Club’s decision was made to ensure that fans, players and staff do not violate the City of Wauwatosa’s 7 p.m. curfew, in effect through Monday, while attending the game.

Due to previously scheduled programming, TVW will only be able to broadcast the second half of Sunday's game. Fans will still be able to watch the full match live on ESPN+ by using a subscription or free trial.
