Forward Madison FC’s return to soccer gave more cause for celebration off the field than on it, as the Flamingos fell to defeat in their season opener on Saturday, losing 2-1 on the road against reigning USL League One champions North Texas SC.

The Flamingos came on strong in the first half, but ran out of steam as the game wound down, conceding the decisive goal at the hour mark. 

North Texas got the scoring started in the 11th minute, with forward Benjamin Redzic’s shot taking a heavy deflection on its way to bouncing past a stranded Philipp Marceta.

It wasn’t long before Forward Madison equalized, scoring in the 30th minute thanks to new striker Wojciech Wojcik, who was brought in to fill a void at the center forward spot. Fullback Jiro Barriga Toyama made a mazy run through the North Texas defense, finding Paulo Júnior on the wing before the Brazilian crossed into the center and Wojcik tapped home.

Barriga Toyama in particular impressed during the game, winding his way past North Texan defenders and making several key tackles on the other end of the pitch.

The Flamingos went into halftime level, but North Texas retook the lead  in the 59th minute thanks to Ronaldo Damus, League One’s top scorer during the 2019 season. Damus split the Flamingo center backs, managing to poke the ball through Marceta’s legs for his team’s second goal.

Marceta, Wojcik, Jalen Crisler and Gustavo Fernandes all made their first-ever starts for Forward Madison. Jamael Cox and Alex Monis made their Forward debuts off the bench as substitutes.

Following Saturday’s defeat, Forward Madison will return to Wisconsin for its home opener on July 31 against Greenville Triumph SC at Hart Park in Wauwatosa. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.

Forward Madison FC has entered into a partnership with TVW to broadcast the club’s entire USL League One season on the TVW channel in 2020, the club announced Friday. Under the new deal, fans will be able to catch all 16 games on local television for the first time.

 With Forward Madison temporarily hosting games in the City of Wauwatosa, the new broadcast agreement will let Madisonians keep up with the team on a local, over-the-air channel, according to Chief Operating Officer/Owner Conor Caloia.

 “When we realized we would not be able to play matches in our home market, a local broadcast deal to provide Forward Madison soccer to our loyal fans free of charge was a top priority,” Caloia said. “We are excited to have a great partner in TVW that shares our focus and commitment to the greater Madison community.” 

Forward Madison becomes the second USL League One club to secure a local TV deal, joining only the Richmond Kickers. The Flamingos’ games will also continue to be shown on ESPN+, which requires a monthly subscription fee.

After nine months, numerous delays and many questions over whether the team would even take the field, Forward Madison FC will finally kick off its long-anticipated 2020 season this Saturday evening. With the USL League One season underway at last, the Flamingos will resume exactly where they left off in 2019: On the road against North Texas SC.

Well, maybe not exactly where they left off.

The 2020 season will look a lot different for the Flamingos. Each team will be allowed five substitutes, rather than the regular three, to compensate for increased fatigue in a congested schedule. Only two of 11 teams in League One will make the postseason. And Head Coach Daryl Shore knows that without a true preseason (Forward Madison has only held full-contact training sessions for several weeks), his team must adjust quickly.   

“Our guys are just excited to actually get on the field again and play a game,” Shore said. “Will it be a little sloppy? I’m sure it will be at times. But we’ve had some good training sessions and I’m sure they’ve had some good training sessions. I think it’ll be a good game.”

Saturday’s game will feature a roster with plenty of familiar faces for Shore, with 12 players returning from the previous season. There will be plenty of room, however, for new additions, such as striker Wojciech Wojcik, to introduce themselves to fans. Shore pointed to the veteran attacker as someone who the Flamingos will count on to help produce goals during their 16-game sprint of a season.

“We had a good year last year, but it wasn’t good enough because we didn’t lift the trophy,” Shore said.

Forward Madison are quite familiar by now with its opponent, North Texas SC, whom the Flamingos faced off against five times in their inaugural campaign. Despite winning both matchups at Breese Stevens Field, FMFC has yet to claim a point in Texas, falling to the eventual 2019 League One champions in the playoff semifinals.

 Still, NTSC’s lineup will certainly look different from the two teams’ previous meeting. Last year’s league MVP, Arturo Rodriguez, has moved to Real Monarchs on loan; Similarly, 2019 captain Brecc Evans was loaned out to Austin Bold FC. 

Although North Texas may well look to its MLS parent club, FC Dallas, for reinforcements, Shore said he can’t afford to play a guessing game.

“They don’t miss a beat,” Shore said. ‘I know they’ve lost a lot of players from last year, but they reload. We know they’re going to be good. We know they’re going to get after us.”

Following Saturday’s season opener, Forward Madison will return to Wisconsin for its home opener on July 31 against Greenville Triumph SC at Hart Park in Wauwatosa.

Forward Madison FC has received three players on loan from Chicago Fire FC ahead of the Flamingos’ first USL League One game of the season, the club announced Friday. Goalkeeper Chris Brady, forward Alex Monis and midfielder Allan Rodríguez are all Homegrown players, signed to their first professional contracts earlier this year by the Fire.

According to Head Coach & Technical Director Daryl Shore, the Fire players will help bolster his team’s roster, which now sits at 23 players.

“First and foremost, we’re excited to have Chris, Alex and Allan on our roster,” Shore said. “They’re all young men learning to become proper professionals, and part of that process is learning to compete to earn minutes. We think they’ll give us quality depth on our team, but at the same time, when they get a chance to play I think they can take it.”

Forward Madison previously announced an affiliation with the Fire on March 5, giving the Flamingos a chance to bolster their roster through loan deals with the Major League Soccer club. As part of the partnership, the Fire retains the right to recall Brady, Monis and Rodriguez at any point, subject to MLS roster compliance guidelines. 

Brady, 16, was signed as the 19th Homegrown Player in Club history on March 24. A native of Naperville, Ill., Brady originally joined the Chicago Fire Academy in 2017. During his time with the Fire Academy, Brady made 48 appearances (48 starts) at the U-14, U-15, U-16 and U-17 levels.

Monis, 17, joined the Fire’s first team as the 18th Homegrown Player in Club history on March 11. A native of Naperville, Ill., Monis has been with the Club since 2015, featuring in the Fire Juniors and Academy programs. Prior to signing with the first team, Monis made 78 appearances (67 starts). In 19 appearances (18 starts) for the Academy, Monis scored ten goals and added two assists. 

Rodríguez, 16, became the 20th Homegrown Player signing in Club history on March 25. After being identified by the Indiana Fire Academy scouting staff, the Elkhart, Ind., native joined the Indiana Fire in the fall of 2017. In January 2019, Rodríguez transferred to the Chicago Fire Academy, making 21 appearances (15 starts).

Forward Madison is set to kick off its 2020 USL League One this Saturday, July 25 at 8 p.m., with a road game against North Texas SC. The Flamingos will play 16 games this year during a four-month USL League One regular season, with the top two teams qualifying for the League One Final.

The top two teams in the regular season will advance to the 2020 League One Final, which will be played the weekend following the conclusion of the regular season.

Forward Madison will kick off its season on July 25 on the road against defending champions North Texas SC, finishing four months later at home against New England Revolution II on October 24. The Flamingos’ schedule features two games against Chattanooga Red Wolves, FC Tucson, Greenville Triumph, New England Revolution II, North Texas SC and Union Omaha.

As was the case in 2019, all games in the 2020 USL League One regular season will stream live on ESPN+.

Forward Madison FC will officially kick off its 2020 home schedule on July 31 at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, the club announced Thursday. The Flamingos are set to start the USL League One season on the road, traveling to play North Texas SC on July 25 before returning to Wisconsin to face Greenville Triumph SC in the team’s first home match.

Forward Madison FC will officially kick off its 2020 home schedule on July 31 at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, the club announced Thursday. The Flamingos plan to release Hart Park-specific season ticket and half-season ticket packages after USL League One reveals its full 2020 schedule. Single-game tickets will go on sale Thursday, July 23 at 10 am. Current Forward Madison FC season ticket holders will be contacted in the next 24 hours about next steps; no action needs to be taken today.

Dear Fans of Forward Madison FC, 

Recently we have been faced with a situation that is unique to Forward Madison amongst the 47 USL Clubs. The League Board of Governors has voted to return to play, but due to local health restrictions, we are unable to train or play in our home market of Madison, Wisconsin, at our home venue, Breese Stevens Field. We respect the decisions of the local officials, have abided by these rules and are not making any effort to contest these policies. However, we are a member of a League and thus have an obligation to the USL League One and our fellow members to participate in the League. 

Therefore, to fulfill our commitment to the League, we were required to find another facility to call home for 2020. Over the last month, our front office has explored nearly a dozen facilities across southern Wisconsin. Our task was to find a venue that meets United States Soccer Federation Division III standards located in a municipality where contact sports are allowed. 

After an exhaustive search, we are excited to call Hart Park in Wauwatosa home for the 2020 season. We would like to thank the City of Wauwatosa for welcoming us and working with our compressed timeline. Our COVID Readiness Plan has been approved by the City of Wauwatosa’s Department of Public Health and we are confident we can return to play in a safe environment at Hart Park. 

We understand that such a drastic change of venue will present many questions to our loyal fans. This is not a decision that was made lightly. There has been a great deal of time, effort and planning put into this decision to participate in 2020. We are aware there are concerns about player and fan safety. Candidly, we share those concerns and have worked to develop an extensive plan to make our match day environment as safe as possible for our players, fans and staff. 

The USL has an extensive Return to Play protocol that was developed with a National Task Force of professional soccer Leagues and guided by several international public health experts. Furthermore, we have a custom plan for Hart Park that features the following: 

a. Face coverings will be required at all times for guests. The one exception will be when guests are consuming food or beverages while in their assigned seats.

b. We have developed a socially distanced seat map for Hart Park that provides a 36-foot radius around each household of tickets. This takes the normal grandstands with a capacity of 4,900 down to 1,347 seats. We will be operating at less than 30 percent capacity and will socially distance throughout the large venue. 

c. We will have increased sanitization practices at the venue pre-match, during the match and post-match. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the venue. Furthermore, we will transition to a cashless environment and offer food and beverage in a modified manner to ensure safety. 

Finally, I know there are going to be concerns about the distance of our new venue from Madison. Playing home matches 75 miles from home is not an ideal situation. This was the best and only viable solution given available venues and restrictions. If you are interested and willing, we would love to have you join us at Hart Park. If that is not a fit, we totally understand and will credit your account for 2021.
