Leslie David Baker, better known as “Stanley” from the television show “The Office,” will make a special appearance at Forward Madison FC’s home game on Wednesday, Aug. 28, the club announced Monday. Baker, who gained cult popularity through his role, will be available to meet-and-greet with fans before the game.

“The Office,” which is reportedly the most popular show on Netflix, ran for nine seasons on NBC and received critical acclaim. Baker’s character, Stanley Hudson, serves as a deadpan counterpart to his overly-eccentric co-workers.

Forward fans will be able to buy the “Office Pack” for the game,  which includes a match ticket, a soft pretzel, a Forward Madison-themed crossword puzzle and a Forward Madison-themed “Office” shirt.

Forward Madison currently sits in sixth place in its inaugural USL League One season, two points out of the playoff spots with seven matches to play. The Flamingos have posted an average attendance of 4,237 at Breese Stevens Field, which leads the 10-team league.

Forward Madison FC claimed a well-earned point on the road Saturday, holding Greenville Triumph SC to a 0-0 draw. The Triumph had won three games in a row before Saturday, and FMFC can now look forward to three straight home games at Breese Stevens Field.

With the clean sheet, Forward Madison’s defense continued its streak of impressive performances in the latter half of the season. The ‘Mingos have now conceded just two goals in their past five games, and have not let in more than one goal in their past six.

The Flamingos thought they had taken the lead early on in the game, when center back Wyatt Omsberg tucked home a cross from J.C. Banks' left-sided free kick in the 19th minute. As the celebrations ensued, however, the referee pulled it back for an offside call.

FMFC's Brian Sylvestre, who took home his second clean sheet of the season, made his biggest stop in the 29th minute, diving at full extension to push away a long-range shot from Aaron Walker.

Forward Madison nearly converted another chance in the 73rd minute, when substitute Jiro Barriga Toyama turned a shot across his body toward the far post of Greenville's goal. Forward Madison FC is pinning its playoff hopes on slowing down the hottest team in USL League One when it travels to Greenville Triumph SC on Saturday (6 p.m.; ESPN+). The Flamingos have just eight games left to earn a place in the inaugural USL League One playoffs, but are about to come up against a team that has lost just one game since June.

With FMFC sitting two points out of fourth place after a home loss to Richmond last week, it must now try to make up those lost points on the road. Speaking on Let Me Be Forward, Head Coach Daryl Shore said that with teams so close in the standings, three points could be crucial.

“If we go to Greenville and get a win and Tormenta and Chattanooga don’t get results, we’re in third place and everybody’s like, ‘Woah, they’re back in it,’” Shore said. “It’s really going to come down to the last few games of the season.”

The Flamingos had been on fire up until last weekend, having won three league games on the bounce for the first time ever. Even in its 0-1 loss to Richmond last Saturday, FMFC out-shot its opposition 11-4 and achieved its fifth consecutive game with one goal or fewer conceded.

At this point, it’s all about recovering mentally. Forward Madison has won only three of its 10 road away games this season, and in the Triumph, it faces an opponent that has shown no signs of slowing down recently.

Greenville are unquestionably the hottest team in USL League One at the moment. They’ve won their past three matches, lost only one of their last seven and have now climbed to fifth place – one above Forward Madison. Striker Jake Keegan in particular has been on a roll, and is now tied for the league lead with nine goals. 

“You’ve got to always be aware of where he is on the field,” Shore said of Keegan. “You’ve got to make sure you’re not just limiting his chances, but limiting his touches on the ball.”

The Flamingos will also have to contend with the Triumph’s defense, which has conceded a league-lowest 14 goals in 19 games. Goalkeeper Dallas Jaye, recently called up to the Guam national team, has the joint-most clean sheets in League One.

“Right now they’re playing with a lot of confidence, so now they’re the team that’s been in good form and on a good run,” Shore said. “We’ve got to make it hard for them.”

FMFC and Greenville have met once before, drawing 0-0 during the ‘Mingos’ snow-laden home opener in April. Although that game was unforgettable for Forward fans, they’ll certainly be hoping for a better result this time around.

“I don’t think they’ve played a team that attacks quite the way we do,” Shore said. “We’ve got to figure out how we’re going to break them down and what areas of the field we’re going to attack.”

After its game in Greenville, Forward Madison will return home next Saturday, Aug. 24, to host the Richmond Kickers, kicking off a three-match stretch at Breese Stevens Field.

Forward Madison FC couldn’t get the job done Saturday night, falling 0-1 to the Richmond Kickers at Breese Stevens Field. Although the Flamingos fed off the energy from a fervent crowd of 4,510, it wasn’t enough to maintain the team’s club-record three-match winning streak. 

According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, his team looked “lethargic” during too many stretches of the game.

“Maybe we did a little too much this week trying to push the guys, but at the end of the day, just not a good performance overall from our whole group and it starts with me,” Shore said. “Our fans are great, we owe it to them to do better and we’ve just got to take advantage when we’re at home.”

FMFC came out the stronger of the two teams, and arguably should have taken the lead in the 29th minute. Fullback Christian Díaz, tearing down the right flank, was tripped up by a Richmond defender, but got back on his feet and whipped in an inch-perfect cross to Oliver White, who rattled his shot off the upright.

With Richmond playing five men in defense, the Flamingos struggled to break down their opposition for most of the evening. Although FMFC had a few opportunities off free kicks from threatening positions, the ‘Mingos failed to put a single one of their 11 shots on target.

Midfielder J.C. Banks, who put one of those free kicks into the side netting in the 49th minute, said the Flamingos must now learn from their mistakes.

“We just didn’t have the urgency,” Banks said. “We talk about it, but we didn’t bring it. We know we can play better than that, we’ve got to learn from this game, watch film, get better and try to get three points next week.”

The Kickers scored the lone goal of the game in the 69th minute, forward Daniel Jackson finishing off a deflection from a Forward Madison defender. Jackson, a veteran who has been playing in the U.S. lower divisions since 2014, had just come on as a substitute before scoring the goal.  

With its loss, Forward Madison FC has now dropped out of the USL League One playoff positions and down to sixth place.

Forward Madison FC is looking to make it a club record four wins in a row as it hosts Richmond Kickers on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field. The Flamingos are as hot as they’ve been all year, and with nine USL League One games left, can now aim up the table towards one of the top two places and a home playoff game.

Speaking on Let Me Be Forward, Head Coach Daryl Shore said the ‘Mingos are ready to kick into high gear as they reach the final stretch of their inaugural season.

“This is the time of the season where it’s not about our opponent, it’s about us,” Shore said. “If we play the way we’re capable of playing, then we feel that it’s going to be hard for teams to beat us, especially coming into our stadium and playing in front of our home fans.”

The Flamingos are heading into the match with a good level of confidence, having rocketed up the League One standings – from eighth to fourth in two weeks – on the back of consecutive wins against Orlando, Toronto and Tucson. FMFC’s defense has been particularly strong, earning two clean sheets in those games and tripling its regular season total.

Forward Madison hasn’t played Richmond yet, but some players have been looking forward to the two teams’ first meeting for the whole season. Assistant Coach Neil Hlavaty played for the Kickers last year, and helped bring teammates Brandon Barnes, Brandon Eaton and Shaun Russell to FMFC. Although Barnes has yet to make a regular season appearance and Eaton is still around two weeks away from returning from injury, Russell may be a prime candidate to see playing time against his former club.

In the Richmond Kickers, the Flamingos have the honor of hosting one of the most historic professional teams currently active in American soccer. The Kickers have existed since 1993 – even before Major League Soccer formed – and won the U.S. Open Cup in 1995.

The current Kickers team, which played in the USL Championship last year, has not done well on the pitch this season. Richmond is just one place above bottom in USL League One, and has scored the fewest goals (14 in 17 matches) of any team.

Still, FMFC risk running into Richmond at the wrong time; the Kickers have won their last two games, and had the last weekend off to rest. Midfielder Joe Gallardo leads the team with four goals, and ex-New York City FC goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald is returning from a red card suspension.

Shore, who USL League One named its Coach of the Month for July, said his team can’t underestimate Richmond.

“They’re capable of beating teams,” he said. “The Richmond Kickers are a storied club, so they have a lot of pride and they play hard every game. This is a game where, if we don’t come out and really set the tone from the opening whistle, this is a game that won’t be easy for us.

Forward Madison is promoting the game with “Bowl Mingo” bowling shirts to celebrate National Bowling day. The Flamingos are on the road against Greenville Triumph next weekend, but return home on Aug. 24 to play Richmond a second time.
