Forward Madison FC will kick off its first-ever major international exhibition match Friday night, hosting German Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin at Breese Stevens Field. The game promises to be a historic one, not only as a huge test for FMFC’s players, but also as a chance for Madison’s soccer fans to watch one of the world’s major clubs in action.

Founded in 1892, Hertha Berlin is the largest soccer club in Germany’s capital city. Hertha was a founding member of the German Bundesliga and remains the only Berlin team in Germany’s first division. Hertha Berlin finished 11th in the Bundesliga this season and competed in the Europa League as recently as 2017.

Speaking on “Let Me Be Forward” Wednesday, Head Coach Daryl Shore said he is planning to treat the game as a special occasion.

“We view the Hertha Berlin game as a bonus for all of our players,” Shore said. “The fans are going to get a chance to see everybody play, they’re going to see all of our guys get some minutes.”

FMFC will come into the Hertha game in the middle of a heavily-congested schedule in which the team has not had more than four days of rest between games since April. According to Shore, this means he will use the full depth of his roster for the friendly, and could also count on the presence of several non-loan Minnesota United players, as he did during FMFC’s exhibition against UW-Madison last month.

“[Fans] will get to see guys like Ally Hamis Ng’Anzi and Vital Nizigiyimana and Brandon Eaton, even Brandon Barnes will get some minutes,” Shore said. “[These are] guys that haven’t logged a lot of minutes but do a lot on the inside for our team, pushing our guys every day in training sessions. It’s an opportunity for those guys to get quality minutes against a quality opponent.”

Hertha Berlin is just starting its “Berlin Tears Down Walls” tour, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Hertha won 1-0 on Wednesday against Minnesota United, and will continue on to California following its stop in Madison.

Forward Madison is coming off consecutive defeats in USL League One play, having just fallen 3-1 on the road to North Texas SC on Wednesday. Following the Hertha game, the Flamingos will travel to Missouri next Wednesday for a hugely important third-round U.S. Open Cup battle with Saint Louis FC. If FMFC wins, it will advance to play a Major League Soccer team in round four.

For now, though, all the focus is on Friday. For Forward Madison, its match against Hertha Berlin will be a monumental opportunity to play the world’s game against one of the world’s top teams.

Forward Madison FC never quite got it going Wednesday night, falling 3-1 to USL League One leaders North Texas SC at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Tex. The Flamingos have not had more than four days of rest between games since April, and showed signs of tiredness in a dissatisfactory display.

With a major international exhibition coming up Friday against Hertha Berlin and a hugely important U.S. Open Cup game to be played next Wednesday in St. Louis, Head Coach Daryl shore had to rotate his lineup to find the right fits. Forward fans were able to see midfielder Brandon Eaton make his first League One start for FMFC, and he went on to play the full 90 minutes of the game.

"It's been a hard stretch for us," Shore said. "We're a team that doesn't make excuses, but when you play Tuesday, Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday, it's tough and it takes its toll. Our roster right now is not deep. We usually have a few guys on loan to us from Minnesota and we didn't have those guys available to us."

The Flamingos fell behind by two goals early on and didn’t manage to draw level during the rest of the match. North Texas forward Ronaldo Damus latched onto a long ball hoofed over the top of the defense in the 3rd minute, beating FMFC goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre in a one-on-one battle. In the 7th minute, North Texas midfielder David Rodriguez found space in the center of Forward’s penalty area, then rifled a shot that bounced off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

It was Flamingo forward Don Smart, however, who nearly turned the tide of the game when he put FMFC within one with a goal in the 15th minute. Forward Jiro Barriga Toyama had gone past his defender, and his low cross cut out the entire defensive line to set Smart up for an open finish. Smart now has two goals on the season, tying him for the team lead.

Forward Madison, currently sitting seventh in the USL League One table, will have some time off before its next league game – at home on June 1 against Lansing Ignite FC. Meanwhile, the Flamingos will return to Breese Stevens Field to host Hertha Berlin in a major international exhibition Friday night before heading off to Missouri for a third-round U.S. Open Cup clash with Saint Louis FC. If FMFC wins the latter game, it will advance to play a Major League Soccer team in round four.

According to Forward Madison Managing Director Peter Wilt, Madison’s soccer fans will be in for a treat as a world-class soccer team prepares to come to town.

“This is a major international club and we’re thrilled to bring Hertha BSC to Madison,” Wilt said. “We’re thrilled that we have been able to include tickets to see first division clubs from Mexico (Queretaro FC), the United States (Minnesota United) and now Germany (Hertha BSC) in our season ticket packages.”

Forward Madison FC will look for revenge Wednesday night, travelling south to take on North Texas SC. The Flamingos lost their first matchup with North Texas in April, conceding a last-second penalty kick after staving off monsoon weather for 90 minutes in Frisco.

With both teams now well into the USL League One season, the stakes are higher. Forward Madison currently sits in 7th place, just three points out of playoff contention. North Texas, meanwhile, is the only undefeated team remaining in League One, good for 2nd place. If FMFC can pull off the road victory, they’ll not only climb the ladder toward the playoffs, but they’ll also take points off a close competitor.

Forward Madison come into the game with a relatively small injury list, with Minnesota United loanees Carter Manley and Wyatt Omsberg both sidelined. Midfielder Danny Tenorio has returned to regular training following surgery for a meniscus tear he sustained this offseason.

North Texas, meanwhile, will count on the services of League One’s leading goalscorer, 16-year-old Ricardo Pepi. Pepi scored a free kick last weekend in North Texas’ 2-2 draw with Lansing Ignite FC.

Following FMFC’s game in Texas, the team will return home to host German Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin in a major exhibition match on Friday, May 24. The match will feature a weiner dog race at halftime, German currywurst and schnitzel in the concession stands and the Budweiser Clydesdales at Gate One. Forward Madison wasn't able to capitalize on its chances Saturday night, falling 1-0 to South Georgia Tormenta FC in front of 3,762 boisterous fans at Breese Stevens Field. The loss ends FMFC's record six-game undefeated streak, which had seen the team win two U.S. Open Cup games and rise into playoff position in the USL League One standings.

According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, his team played well, but will rue its missed opportunities.

"I’m not disappointed in the way we played, I’m just disappointed we didn’t get the result or score any goals," Shore said. "I’m proud of my guys. They battled to the end, fought hard and we've just got to move on."

Shore's starting lineup featured several changes from the Flamingos' mid-week U.S. Open Cup win in El Paso, including a first start for winger Zaire Bartley. Shore said that he has had to reach into his squad depth as FMFC works its way through a congested period of its calendar.

“We’ve played a lot of games in a short amount of days, so you can’t keep running your guys ragged," he said.

The Flamingos came close to being the first team on the board soon after kickoff, sending in a shot from a Josiel Núñez free kick that Tormenta goalkeepeer Pablo Jara tipped over the bar. Jara was the USLLeagueOne.com Man of the Match, making five saves to deny FMFC.

Midfielder J.C. Banks created another opportunity in the 19th minute, testing Jaye with a swerving shot from long distance that forced a fingertip save from the goalkeeper. According to Banks, the Flamingos were unlucky to not score.

“It’s frustrating, "Banks said. "We Just didn’t finish our chances. I thought we played well for the most part."

Coming out of halftime, Tormenta FC's resilience paid off with the only goal of the game. In the 50th minute, a corner kick found the head of Tormenta defender Josh Phelps, whose shot was deflected onto the crossbar by FMFC goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre. Unfortunately for the Flamingos, though, Tormenta defender William Conner Antley came up with the rebound and put it in.

For the remaining 40 minutes of the game, FMFC pushed forward, looking to find an equalizer against a sat-back Tormenta defense. Sylvestre kept the Flamingos in the game with a huge one-on-one save in the 80th minute, reaching down to somehow take the ball off Charlie Dennis, who had gotten free on a counter-attack.

Banks again came close to the back of the net in stoppage time, putting his header just wide of the post. In the end, FMFC had to succumb to defeat. According to Banks, the Forward fans, which lead the league in average attendance, deserved more than a loss.

"This is definitely the best place to play in the league and it’s frustrating for us that we didn’t get a win for the fans," he said.

FMFC's next chance to move back into playoff position comes Wednesday, as the team flies to Frisco to take on second-place North Texas SC. The Flamingos are home again on Friday for a special exhibition match with German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin.

Forward Madison wasn’t able to capitalize on its chances Saturday night, falling 1-0 to South Georgia Tormenta FC in front of 3,762 boisterous fans at Breese Stevens Field. The loss ends FMFC’s record six-game undefeated streak, which had seen the team win two U.S. Open Cup games and rise into playoff position in the USL League One standings.

According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, his team played well, but will rue its missed opportunities.

“I’m not disappointed in the way we played, I’m just disappointed we didn’t get the result or score any goals,” Shore said. “I’m proud of my guys. They battled to the end, fought hard and we’ve just got to move on.”

Shore’s starting lineup featured several changes from the Flamingos’ mid-week U.S. Open Cup win in El Paso, including a first start for winger Zaire Bartley. Shore said that he has had to reach into his squad depth as FMFC works its way through a congested period of its calendar.

“We’ve played a lot of games in a short amount of days, so you can’t keep running your guys ragged,” he said.

The Flamingos came close to being the first team on the board soon after kickoff, sending in a shot from a Josiel Núñez free kick that Tormenta goalkeepeer Pablo Jara tipped over the bar. Jara was the USLLeagueOne.com Man of the Match, making five saves to deny FMFC.

Midfielder J.C. Banks created another opportunity in the 19th minute, testing Jaye with a swerving shot from long distance that forced a fingertip save from the goalkeeper. According to Banks, the Flamingos were unlucky to not score.

“It’s frustrating, “Banks said. “We Just didn’t finish our chances. I thought we played well for the most part.”

Coming out of halftime, Tormenta FC’s resilience paid off with the only goal of the game. In the 50th minute, a corner kick found the head of Tormenta defender Josh Phelps, whose shot was deflected onto the crossbar by FMFC goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre. Unfortunately for the Flamingos, though, Tormenta defender William Conner Antley came up with the rebound and put it in.

For the remaining 40 minutes of the game, FMFC pushed forward, looking to find an equalizer against a sat-back Tormenta defense. Sylvestre kept the Flamingos in the game with a huge one-on-one save in the 80th minute, reaching down to somehow take the ball off Charlie Dennis, who had gotten free on a counter-attack.

Banks again came close to the back of the net in stoppage time, putting his header just wide of the post. In the end, FMFC had to succumb to defeat. According to Banks, the Forward fans, which lead the league in average attendance, deserved more than a loss.

“This is definitely the best place to play in the league and it’s frustrating for us that we didn’t get a win for the fans,” he said.

FMFC’s next chance to move back into playoff position comes Wednesday, as the team flies to Frisco to take on second-place North Texas SC. The Flamingos are home again on Friday for a special exhibition match with German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin.

Forward Madison FC upset El Paso Locomotive Wednesday night at Southwest University Park in El Paso, dealing a crushing 3-0 blow to the USL Championship side. The win sets up a Round Three match with Saint Louis FC on May 29, and also earns FMFC $25,000 in prize money as the last USL League One team remaining in the tournament. 

The visiting Flamingos started well, finishing the game's first chance to give themselves an early advantage. Paulo Júnior showed good strength, holding off his defender to get to the endline before clipping a ball towards the six-yard box. Jiro Bariga Toyama floated off his defender's back shoulder and knocked the ball home to make it 1-0.

FMFC doubled its lead seven minutes later after a great piece of skill by Jeff Michaud on a counter-attack. Michaud broke loose on the counter, skipping past a defender before clipping a ball in behind to Toyama. Toyama played a teasing pass in behind the retreating El Paso defenders, leaving Christian Diaz with a tap in to double the advantage.

Michaud would put the game on ice in the 76th minute after a brilliant exchange at the top of the El Paso penalty box. Josiel Núñez started the move, playing into Paulo, who had his back to goal. Paulo played a perfect layoff into the path of Michaud's run, giving him time and space to finish. Brian Sylvestre earned the shutout in goal, but was helped by his defense, which allowed just one shot on target all night.
