Going into its second-ever match, Forward Madison FC has plenty at stake. For starters, the Flamingos are still looking for their first goal, having been shut out by Chattanooga Red Wolves SC last week despite recording 11 shots. More importantly, though, the team needs to achieve its first positive result, already trailing league-leaders South Georgia Tormenta by seven points (albeit with two games in hand).

Coming up against North Texas SC this Saturday (9:20 p.m. on ESPN+), FMFC has a chance to turn it around. According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, the team has been working on improving its attacking play in training this week.

“We weren’t good enough with our final product, so we’ve concentrated a lot this week and now we know going into the game we need to be better with the ball and we have to be better in the attacking part of the field,” Shore said. “We’re going to go down there and go after some points.”

Forward Madison could get a boost during the match from goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre, who has returned to training following a hand injury that kept him out of the season opener, and will be available for selection Saturday. Midfielder Danny Tenorio, who tore his left meniscus in preseason, is out for the match.

In North Texas SC, the Flamingos are set to take on a team whose playstyle could not be more different from the Red Wolves last week. In North Texas’ season opener on March 30, the team looked to spread the field wide, play a possession-based game and create attacks from the wings. It worked, as North Texas’ 16-year-old striker Ricard Pepi scored a hat-trick en route to a 3-2 victory. Saturday’s match will take place late at night as the second half of a double-header with North Texas’ Major League Soccer parent club, FC Dallas.

Shore said he expects both teams to come out on the attack.

“It’s going to be a game of two teams that like to possess the ball and get forward as quickly as possible and create as many chances as possible,” Shore said. “They’re a hard-working team, they’re going to press; they’re at home, they’re young, they’re athletic, so it’s going to be a tough challenge for us, but at the same time we feel like we’ve got guys on the field who can handle those kinds of situations.”

Following its game against North Texas SC, Forward Madison will return home to open up Breese Stevens Field for an exhibition match against UW-Madison on April 16. General admission tickets are 15 dollars, or 10 dollars with a student ID and free with a season ticket. FMFC are on the road again next Friday to take on Orlando City B.

Going into its second-ever match, Forward Madison FC has plenty at stake. The average position map from North Texas' season opener shows us that, very roughly speaking, they (the blue dots) will line up with three players up top, three in the middle, and four on the "defensive line," although obviously both fullbacks push up quite a lot. We'll get to that in a moment, but for now, let's focus on the midfield trio, which looks like it's extremely tight together. This is very misleading, though, because in this case it meant the players were splitting time equally between the right, center, and left sides of the field. On Saturday, you should look for those three midfielders to spread out across the pitch during the match and fill gaps when space opens up.

North Texas SC head coach Eric Quill resembles FMFC manager Daryl Shore quite a bit in the fact that they both try to push their outside backs into the attack. This pass distribution chart shows that Quill takes it to a near-extreme: his left and right backs are far more important going forward than they are defensively, and spend much more time near the opposition goal.

So what happens when North Texas' fullbacks are always going forward? They leave space behind them. To compensate, the team's central defenders shift out wider to cover those areas. That, in turn, means they need help covering the middle…

When the center backs shift wider to cover for the advancing fullbacks, it falls on the shoulders of the defensive midfielder to defend the middle. Last game, Brandon Servania attempted three tackles (losing two) right at the edge of his own area, where central defenders would usually be. If Forward Madison can counter-attack quickly, they might be able to force one-on-one situations with Servania before the center backs have time to recover.

It's unclear if Jimmy Maurer will play this weekend since he's also a member of the FC Dallas senior roster, but regardless, it looks like North Texas' goalkeeper will not try to play a lot of long balls. Distribution is short and safe, intended to keep possession and build from defense.

One of Forward Madison's more pressing tasks this weekend will be to slow down 16-year-old phenom Ricardo Pepi, who scored all three goals for North Texas in its opening match. Forward Madison FC has been drawn to play against Milwaukee Bavarian SC in the first round of the 2019 U.S. Open Cup, the club learned Wednesday. The match will take place at 7:30 p.m. on May 7 at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, with the Bavarians having won hosting rights via a coin flip.

Now in its 106th year, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – U.S. Soccer's national championship, so to speak – is the oldest continuously running soccer tournament in the country, and one of the oldest in the world. What makes it unique in the landscape of American sports is that the Open Cup, like the name suggests, is completely open. Any team, pro or amateur, from the heights of Major League Soccer down to a local pub team, can try to qualify for the tournament and become champions.

Bavarian SC, founded in 1929, is an amateur team, and is by far the oldest club in this year’s tournament.  They qualified for this year’s Open Cup by winning the U.S. Adult Soccer Association’s Amateur Cup in August 2018. Over the years, some of the most important figures in Wisconsin soccer history have played for the Bavarians, including Bob Gansler, head coach of the United States men’s national team in the 1990 World Cup.

According to Forward Madison Managing Director Peter Wilt who has won four US Open Cup Championships, a battle for Wisconsin could be one of the highlights of FMFC’s inaugural season.

“We are delighted to be able to contest an all-Wisconsin matchup against Bavarian SC in this year’s Open Cup,” Wilt said. “The Bavarians represent a critical piece of Wisconsin soccer history, and the foundation they laid over many years has allowed Forward Madison to exist. The match also gives our fans a great opportunity to travel to an away game, and we expect they will contribute to an electric atmosphere.”

If Forward Madison win, it will move on to play a second-round match against a team that will probably be from the USL Championship on May 14th or 15th. If FMFC can make it to the fourth round, it would have the chance to play against a Major League Soccer team.

Mandela Barnes and the Wisconsin Community Action Program Association (WISCAP) to “Show Poverty the Red Card” at the Flamingos' inaugural home opener on Saturday, April 27th at Breese Stevens Field. Lt. Gov. Barnes will be on hand for the ceremonial first kick at the start of the game, while FMFC will distribute educational materials on poverty in Wisconsin and feature in video and PA announcements throughout the night.

WISCAP, Wisconsin’s Poverty Fighting Network, is comprised of 16 local community action agencies and two single purpose agencies working across the state to address the realities of poverty and economic dislocation. According to Barnes, the partnership gives an opportunity for the Madison community to come together for a common goal – in two senses of the word.

“I’m excited to join Forward Madison FC for their first-ever match at home and I’m just as excited to stand with WISCAP against poverty," Barnes said. "Everyone in our state deserves the opportunity to thrive—regardless of their ZIP code. I’m happy to see Forward Madison and WISCAP bring awareness to an issue that affects so many families and communities in our state.”

Several dozen fans made the trip down to Tennessee to watch FMFC live, while more gathered back home for watch parties in Madison.

The Flamingos held the vast majority of possession (67 percent) throughout the match and created more chances (11 shots to 6), but were ultimately undone by a neat goal from Red Wolves striker Éamon Zayed in the 67th minute. According to Head Coach Daryl Shore, his team played well, even as the end result didn’t show it.

“Overall I thought the effort of our group was very good, I don’t think we came out and played too nervous for it being our first game,” Shore said. “They were tough to break down, and it’s their home opener. So for us we’re obviously disappointed with the result, but I don’t think we’re too disappointed with the way we played.”

Shore had to contend with his first challenge before the opening whistle, as left back Christian Diaz’s international player clearance failed to come through in time for kickoff. Shore was forced to shuffle his deck, moving midfielder Don Smart back into the defense.

“Our hands were tied because Christian’s ITC (International Transfer Certificate) didn’t come in, so we waited to the last minute with that,” Shore said. “We felt the best chance was to move Don back to right back because he’s comfortable playing there, [and] Carter [Manley]’s comfortable playing on the left.”

FMFC came out strong from the opening whistle. Chattanooga goalkeeper Alex Mengels had to leap to catch striker Mason Toye’s attempted chip shot in the 10th minute, then shortly thereafter midfielder Josiel Núñez came close with a free kick that sailed over the bar. Núñez put on an impressive debut performance, completing 68 passes and showing off creative ways to set up teammates, including a highlight-reel backheel flick in the 20th minute

“Overall I thought the effort of our group was very good, I don’t think we came out and played too nervous for it being our first game,” Shore said. “They were tough to break down, and it’s their home opener. So for us we’re obviously disappointed with the result, but I don’t think we’re too disappointed with the way we played.”

Shore had to contend with his first challenge before the opening whistle, as left back Christian Diaz’s international player clearance failed to come through in time for kickoff. Shore was forced to shuffle his deck, moving midfielder Don Smart back into the defense.

“Our hands were tied because Christian’s ITC (International Transfer Certificate) didn’t come in, so we waited to the last minute with that,” Shore said. “We felt the best chance was to move Don back to right back because he’s comfortable playing there, [and] Carter [Manley]’s comfortable playing on the left.”

FMFC came out strong from the opening whistle. Chattanooga goalkeeper Alex Mengels had to leap to catch striker Mason Toye’s attempted chip shot in the 10th minute, then shortly thereafter midfielder Josiel Núñez came close with a free kick that sailed over the bar. Núñez put on an impressive debut performance, completing 68 passes and showing off creative ways to set up teammates, including a highlight-reel backheel flick in the 20th minute

Forward Madison’s players, coaches and fans have waited a long, long time for this moment. On Saturday night, the club will kick off its first-ever competitive match on the road against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, marking a historic moment in Flamingo history.

Head Coach Daryl Shore, who has been building the FMFC roster since he was hired over six months ago, said he can't wait to finally get his team out on the field.

“There’s some excitement, there’s some anxiousness and I think everybody’s just ready to finally get the season underway,” Shore said. “It’s been a long, seven-week preseason and the guys have put a lot of hard work in. They’ve really concentrated on the things we’ve talked about, what we want to be as a team. Now it’s a chance for us to finally go out and start.”

According to Shore, much of his starting lineup has already been decided by this point. Forward Madison will be without two players for its inaugural match: Midfielder Danny Tenorio is still recovering from knee surgery following a meniscus tear in preseason, and is expected to be back in team practices soon; Goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre is out with a hand injury, but has already returned to training, albeit wearing a splint.

The Flamingos will be aided in Tennessee by a healthy contingent of traveling support from Madison. Around 40-50 fans are expected to make the trip, and will sit together in a section behind the FMFC bench.

“From day one our fanbase has been awesome,” Shore said. “The Flock and all the other fans followed us through preseason, and now having them come down to Chattanooga, it’s going to be a great feeling for our guys to know there are some fans traveling from Madison.”

Forward Madison’s opponent, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, began its season last week with a 2-3 loss away to North Texas SC. The team is coached by Tim Hankinson, a longtime manager at every level of professional soccer in the U.S. The Red Wolves squad contains a healthy veteran presence, with Shore picking out 35-year-old striker Éamon Zayed as a potential threat.

“They’ve got a really good attacking group,” Shore said. “We’re well aware that, even though they lost their first game, they’re a talented team, they’re a veteran team and they’re going to be looking to get off on the right foot in their home opener.”

For many fans, though, the result is ultimately secondary; No matter what the score, Saturday night represents the dawn of a new era. It's the start of professional soccer in Madison.

Being a backup goalkeeper can be a lonely job. Unlike with other positions on the field, goalkeepers don’t often need a game off to rest their legs, so if you aren’t the starter, you might not get to play at all; instead, you have to wait.

Brandon Barnes, Forward Madison’s latest signing, knows a thing or two about waiting. More often than not, his patience has paid off. In sixth grade, he wrote in a school assignment that he wanted to be a professional soccer player. He’d have to wait until he was 23 years old, but he’d finally get that chance.

After earning his spot at the start of the season, he not only held onto it, but posted statistics that placed him among the best goalkeepers in NCAA Division I: 8th in save percentage, 15th in saves per game and 17th in shutouts, to name a few.

After waiting four years for a starting job, Barnes had not only managed to accomplish one goal, but also set the foundation for another: the professional career he had always dreamed of.

“I probably had the best performance I’ve ever had,” he said. “Bradley really let me reach my potential and let me see that I could go further.”

Barnes eventually found an opportunity with the Laredo Heat, a semi-professional team that plays a summer schedule in the National Premier Soccer League. Once again, Barnes shined; the Heat won every game in its regular season, and Barnes was the main starter.

Following the summer season, Barnes’ patience paid off again. Clewlow, now in need of a goalkeeper for the Kickers, came back and offered him a spot. He signed at the beginning of August as the third-stringer, and settled into a familiar waiting game.

At some point, the Kickers’ on-loan starter Travis Worra got called back up to D.C. United, meaning Barnes became the direct backup. On Sept. 26, he finally got a chance to start his first professional game.

“It was definitely nerve wracking,” Barnes said. “I think at least for the first 15-20 minutes I was nervous in a good way. If you don’t have those butterflies, [if] you don’t have that excitement, then you’re not going to be up to the game. You need that excitement and adrenaline to get you going. But after that I settled in and it just felt like another day at the office, something I love to do, so for me it was fun to be out there, fun to compete.”
