Forward Madison returns to winning ways with 1-0 victory over New England

Forward Madison found victory for the first time in six tries on Wednesday, earning a 1-0 win over New England Revolution II at Breese Stevens Field. Forward Jake Keegan secured the three points with a goal on a breakaway in the 20th minute, his team-leading fifth strike of the season.
The win earned the Flamingos a measure of revenge over the Revolution, who had previously beaten FMFC at home on June 19.
Head coach Carl Craig lauded his team’s mental fortitude to preserve the lead as the game wore on.
“I think it’s a massive shift to score the goal and then to be under pressure for so long, to show such character is outstanding,” Craig said. “That’s a shift in our mentality, because last week down in Greenville we we’re in a better position, in better control and we didn’t finish it off. Today shows great character.”
Despite a slow start for the hosts, it was Forward Madison which opened the scoring in the 20th minute. A probing ball from Christian Diaz made its way to Jake Keegan, and the Flamingos’ top scorer quickly found himself one on one with New England’s goalkeeper before smashing his fifth goal of the season into the back of the net.
According to Keegan, though, it was the Flamingos’ ability to persevere after his goal that revealed the team’s true character.
“This is the kind of game that, if you want to make the playoffs, if you want to win championships, it’s the kind of game you have to win,” Keegan said.
New England II came close from distance in the 36th minute on a shot from Damian Rivera, though their best chance of the first half was snuffed out by Phil Breno during a late rush towards Forward Madison’s goal in the final moments before halftime.
After the break, Forward Madison held a much better grip on the game, but set piece routines led by Aaron Molloy ultimately didn’t breach the defense. Molloy also scuffed a header wide in the 59th minute, while New England’s Noel Buck hit the crossbar in the 86th minute.
Goalkeeper Phil Breno, who kept his third clean sheet of the season, noted the importance of the fans and emphasized that more is to come from the Flamingos.
“I still believe that tonight was great, but we still have so much more horsepower behind us and it’s coming,” Breno said. “This is the best atmosphere you could play in lower league soccer, maybe in higher league soccer in the U.S. This is just wonderful across the board.”
Thanks to the win, Forward Madison climbed to fifth place on 16 points in USL League One, ahead of Toronto FC II on goal differential with two games in hand.
The Flamingos will now head out on a two-game road trip, starting with a stop against North Texas SC on July 10 before facing Union Omaha on July 16. The next home game FMFC is a friendly against Atletico Morelia of Mexico on July 20.

Forward Madison announced today that it will host several statewide youth camps this August as a part of its partnership with German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt.
The teams will host two week long camps in Madison for age groups 10-13 and 14-18. Single day camps across the state of Wisconsin will be launched later this week. Forward Madison FC is looking for revenge Wednesday night when it welcomes New England Revolution II to Breese Stevens Field for the second time in just 11 days. Gates open at 6 p.m. and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT.
FMFC will be looking to turn the tables on the Revolution, who walked out 2-0 winners largely against the run of play on June 19. According to midfielder Aaron Molloy, who played the full 90 minutes in that game, the ‘Mingos are ready to own up to their mistakes.
“This week we have a fire in our belly,” Molloy said. “Everyone’s up for this game. We’re really excited to put things right.”
Molloy played a significant role in earning Forward Madison a point at Greenville Triumph SC last week, scoring both goals for the Flamingos in a 2-2 road draw. The Irishman’s rocket from distance in the 15th minute earned a nomination for USL League One Goal of the Week.
“Coach has been on us about getting up the field with the ball,” Molloy said. “A lot of us went up for the counter-attack and Jake [Keegan] found me on the top of the box. I was happy to hit it clean and get it on target.”
The result means Forward Madison currently sit seventh in the USL League One standings, tied on points with the visiting Revolution II. Midfielder Justin Sukow is doubtful for Wednesday’s game, but midfielder Michael Vang and goalkeeper Aidan Hogan have returned from injury, while defender Josiah Trimmingham – who only recently arrived in the country – has officially cleared League One’s Covid-19 testing protocols.
For head coach Carl Craig, the Flamingos’ strong road performance – and in particular its interplay in the first half – is indicative of the team’s progress despite a recent dip in form.
“I think we’re in a really positive position,” Craig said. “We haven’t always had the results we desire, but we take the game to the opponent and we’re assertive. I think that’s what we should be doing and I think we’ve got the tools to be doing it. Now we just have to put that bloody thing in the net.”
On the other side, New England Revolution II comes into the game riding a fine spell of form. After beating the Flamingos on June 19, the Revolution powered past North Texas SC 3-0 on Saturday and have now won three of their last five matches.
Midfielder Noel Buck, who scored New England’s winner in Madison, may be the player to watch for the visitors. Buck leads the Revolution with three goals scored in nine appearances, while midfielder Jake Rozhansky paces the team in assists with three decisive passes.
According to Craig, the Flamingos would do well to feed off the energy from Breese Stevens Field in order to topple the Revolution on Wednesday.
“I’ll take a win, but I want us to have a certain style and caché where we’re not only winning, but we’re winning in a way that entertains the fans,” Craig said. “The vibrant atmosphere here encourages the style of football that we want to play. I think that’s when you get that flow state between the players on the field and the crowd.”
Following Saturday’s match, Forward Madison will take a week off before traveling south for a road game against North Texas SC on July 10. The Flamingos won’t return to Breese Stevens Field until July 20, when they host Mexican team Atlético Morelia in an exhibition game.
Jiro Barriga Toyama, Aaron Molloy named to League One Team of the Week

Forward Madison defender Jiro Barriga Toyama and midfielder Aaron Molloy have been named to the USL League One Team of the Week for Week 12, the league announced Monday.
Though Madison took home just one point from its trip to Greenville, Barriga Toyama put up a gaudy stat line for the Flamingos. His fantastic bit of skill earned Madison a penalty kick early in the match, and he put up big numbers in a variety of categories. His tallies of duels won (15), successful tackles (four), fouls drawn (three), and dribbles completed (three) were all game highs.
Molloy recorded both of Madison’s goals in its 2-2 draw with Greenville, the first from the penalty spot and the second with a thunderous first-time strike from the edge of the area. The Irishman also completed a game-high 57 passes at an 86 percent success rate.
