Triumph SC to play its first-ever Open Cup road match this spring
Greenville, SC (February 16, 2022) – The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup announced the second round pairings of the 110th national tournament today. The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club will travel west to play Phoenix Rising FC in the 2023 USOC. The match’s date and time will be announced in the coming days. Greenville is one of nine League One clubs to draw an opponent from the Championship division in the second round of the tournament. Both leagues enter the bracket-style tournament after the first round, which is solely comprised of amateur and semi-professional clubs.
The match will begin Greenville’s third campaign in the tournament after multi-match runs in 2019 and 2022. The club hosted fellow League One side South Georgia Tormenta FC in the second round of 2019’s tournament, with Anderson native Cole Seiler scoring a late goal to seal a 1-0 win. GTSC welcomed the USL Championship’s Charleston Battery in the third round, leading 1-0 before allowing two late goals to the Battery in a loss. In 2022, Greenville hosted the Oakland Roots during their first matchup, knocking off the west coast club 2-0. In the third round, Greenville gave MLS side, Charlotte FC, all they could handle before falling in extra time 2-1.
