Favorite snack?

NL: “There are a few that I probably shouldn’t be saying are my favorite snack [laugh]. I’ve got quite a sweet tooth – I like sweets.”

If you could only watch one movie for the rest of your life, what would it be?

NL: “Ah, that’s tough. I like a comedy. I love ‘The Hangover’ series. If ‘The Hangover’ comes on – One, Two or Three – I have to watch it, I can’t turn it over. I like ‘Wedding Crashers’ as well, but if I had to choose one, I’d probably choose the first Hangover in Vegas. Like I said, if it’s on, I can’t turn it over. I must’ve watched it 15-20 times now. It gets me every time. I can’t stop laughing.”

Favorite soccer team you support?

NL: “Oh, Manchester United. The first-ever game my dad took me to was United away at [Nottingham] Forest – I was only five or six-years-old. Yeah, they won 4-nil and that was it, I’ve been United ever since then. I’ve had some good times, but as you know we’ve had five or six tough years now supporting Man United. It’s getting a little bit better now.”

Favorite/most inspirational soccer player of all-time?

NL: “There are loads to choose from Man United for myself, personally, but my favorite was always Eric Cantona. He was kind of the ‘main man’ when I first started going to watch and support [Manchester United]. Just loved everything about him obviously as a player, but he had that aura about him off the field as well."

"I’ve always said my idol was Eric Cantona, but as a midfield player I also really like Paul Scholes and Roy Keane. I remember when I was at Sheffield United that my first start was against Man United. It was my debut and I played against Paul Scholes. One of the biggest things that I look back on in my career now is playing against him. I have to admit that I didn’t get too close to him that day.”

If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

NL: “Yeah, that’s tough. There are a few. I think an obvious one would be Eric Cantona, but a little bit more out there would be Tiger Woods. I love golf, I love American sport and he’s obviously right up there with everyone and anyone in the world. I’d imagine he has some stories to tell at the dinner table, if they’re PG enough [laughs]. I watched a great documentary recently about his comeback and everything he’s been through. I think that’d be a pretty cool meal.

What’s your favorite pre-game hype song (or playlist)?

NL: “I’m quite varied with the kind of music I like. I don’t know what it’s like over there, but over here there’s kind of a designated DJ who puts all the music on for everyone. It’s never been myself, really – I’ve always been one of the other lads."

"But for myself, I’m into R&B, hip-hop, things like that. I like Drake. I’m pretty versatile – I’ll listen to any genre, really. If I like the song I’ll listen to it before a game.”

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

NL: “I’ve always said flying. Or maybe…no, flying, really. To just go anywhere you want when you want. Do some stuff to some people I guess from high up if you don’t like them [laughs].”

If you could be a guest star on any TV show, what show would you be on?

NL: “My favorite TV show ever, they don’t really do anything now and I hope they do another in the future, is ‘Entourage’. Maybe integrate myself into that group. I love Johnny Drama and Ari Gold, they’re two of my favorite characters. If I could get a guest appearance on that show, that would be my favorite.”

What’s one thing about you that no one else knows?

NL: “I’m not sure. Maybe people at Indy Eleven don’t know this now, but everywhere I go people end up saying how laid back I am. I’m pretty chilled out. You wouldn’t know it at the moment, but I’m pretty chill and laid back, hopefully in a good way. My partner, Amy, doesn’t love it so much [laughs], but I hope most people grow to like it. I’m pretty easy going and I hope that’ll settle me in over there.”

Who is your celebrity lookalike?

NL: “When I was younger, I had a lot more hair than I have now. I used to have short, curly hair and people said I looked like Spencer Pratt from ‘The Hills’. One person since I shaved my hair off said to my mom that I looked like Jason Statham. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but someone did say that, and I think that’s about as far as it got with myself. I get a lot of bald jokes over here, but the Jason Statham one I was quite pleased with.”

What are you most excited about this season?

NL: “First, I’m really excited to just get over there. It’s a completely new thing for me. It’s something I’ve thought that the longer my career went on I maybe missed the boat on something; I didn’t think I was going to get the chance to go abroad and try something new. So definitely that culture change, and it’s a country I love. I’ve gone on holiday there nearly every year since I’ve been going away, really.

“I think I’m excited to see how far we can go this year. Speaking with Martin [Rennie] and other people, we’re looking to go all the way this year and the squad we’re putting together certainly resembles that target. For myself, just to come a play for the team and hopefully go all the way, to meet the fans and play in front of the crowd. I’ve heard so much about the atmosphere that the Indy Eleven fans bring. I can’t wait to get out there and get going.”

Indy Eleven today announced a transfer deal with Inter Miami CF that will see forward Josh Penn join the Major League Soccer side, effective immediately. Terms of the agreement that sent the promising 20-year-old striker to the South Floridian squad will not be released, per club policy. 

Penn followed forward Tyler Pasher (Houston Dynamo FC) and goalkeeper Evan Newton (Vancouver Whitecaps FC) as members of Indiana’s Team who have joined the ranks of Major League Soccer via transfers over the last month. Inter Miami secured the MLS player rights to Penn after selecting him in the first round (10th overall) of the 2021 MLS SuperDraft on January 21. 

“Josh has been a pleasure to work with in the time he has been with us,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “He is a player with a lot of talent and an excellent work ethic. We look forward to watching his progress and wish him well as his career develops.” 

After blazing a trail as Indy Eleven’s first USL Academy contract signing during the 2019 preseason, Penn also became the first Academy product to sign with Indiana’s Team as a professional when he re-joined the squad last August. While he did not suit up across the second half of the Eleven’s shortened 2020 season, Penn started two of his five appearances in 2019, the then-18-year-old taking a pair of shots across his 157 minutes of USL Championship regular season action. 

“Indy Eleven will always have a special place in my heart. The staff took a chance on me when I was a teenager and gave me a taste of the professional game at an early age. The players there were so welcoming and truly helped me develop throughout me time there,” stated Penn. “Lastly, the fans and supporters made me feel at home from the moment I got there. Indy Eleven truly is a special place and organization. I can’t thank everyone at the club enough for what they’ve given me.” 

In between stints with the Boys in Blue, Penn enjoyed a successful freshman season at Indiana University in fall 2019. His six goals and two assists helped the Hoosiers to the Big Ten regular season and postseason tournament titles, and earned the native of Naperville, Ill., selections to the All-Big Ten Second Team and the All-Big Ten Freshman Team.

The 2021 campaign will mark the third season of Edwards’ burgeoning professional career, which began in 2019 with Portadown FC in Northern Ireland’s NIFL Championship. Edwards was pivotal to The Ports’ title run, registering a 16W-3L-4D record and finishing with a sparkling 0.78 goals against average and 12 shutouts.

After serving as Portadown’s starting goalkeeper in the first 23 games of their 2019/20 promotion-winning campaign, the native of Parsippany, N.J., returned stateside in January 2020 to join Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati. Edwards made two appearances for the Ohio side last October, winning his debut start against eventual MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew SC at Nippert Stadium.

Prior to going pro, Edwards played four collegiate seasons for three different programs, beginning at St. Joseph’s University (2014-16) and continuing on to Monmouth University (2017) before finishing with a graduate senior season stint at Mount St. Mary’s University (2018). In all, Edwards totaled 62 appearances (60 starts), registering 262 saves and earning 11 shutouts during his collegiate career.

After beginning 2019 back with Atlanta United, Wild signed midseason with another MLS squad in D.C. United. A loan to Loudoun United FC paid huge dividends for both the USL Championship expansion side and Wild, who scored ten times in just 16 appearances across the final half of the season. When factoring in his 18 goals and six assists overall across 2018-19, Wild averaged a goal or assist every 150 minutes of play in his two seasons of USL Championship action.

That performance earned Wild a third MLS contract in 2020 with LA Galaxy, his standout moment for the Southern California side coming when he assisted Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez’s first MLS goal against Portland Timbers FC in their MLS is Back Tournament opener last July in Orlando.

Prior to turning professional, the youth product of German Bundesliga regular Mainz 05 spent two seasons at the University of Maryland, where he collected 22 goals and seven assists. Indy Eleven is ready to go “Back Home Again” for the 2021 season, as Indiana’s Team today confirmed it will return to IUPUI’s Michael A. Carroll Stadium for the squad’s fourth campaign in the USL Championship – and eighth year of play overall – beginning this spring.

Indy Eleven will utilize Carroll Stadium as a short-term venue solution until its future home of Eleven Park is completed in the coming years. Indy Eleven recently announced the location for the transformative Eleven Park stadium and neighborhood development project will be revealed by the end of March.

Additional ticketing options will be made available in the coming weeks upon the release of the squad’s 2021 schedule. USL Championship confirmed last week that its 31 squads would launch their seasons around May 1, with “floating start dates” slated to occur between April 24 and May 15.

Multiple current members of the “Boys in Blue” also familiarized themselves with “The Mike” during the fall of 2019, when Indy Eleven hosted a pair of games in the USL Championship Eastern Conference Playoffs, including the club’s first USL Conference Championship appearance.

In all, more than 620,000 fans and supporters filed into Carroll Stadium for a combined 70 regular season, postseason, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and exhibition contests between 2014-2019, adding a new and electric atmosphere to Indianapolis’ thriving sports scene along the way. Indy Eleven made history at the venue in 2014 when it became the first American professional American soccer team to sell out the entirety of its Inaugural Season. That year’s average attendance of 10,485 actually surpassed the team’s official venue capacity that season thanks to an overflow crowd of 11,048 at its Inaugural Match on April, 12, 2014 – a mark that also stands as the largest crowd for an Eleven game at “The Mike.”
