2020 USL Championship Regular Season Records
Indy Eleven: 4W-1L-0D, 12 pts. (+5 GD), 1st in Group E
Hartford Athletic: 3W-0L-0D, 9 pts. (+4 GD), 1st in Group F

Indy Eleven returns home on Wednesday after a two-match road trip that included a pair of 1-0 results – last Wednesday’s dramatic win at Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and its first defeat of 2020 Sunday in Saint Louis. Despite outshooting STLFC 19-2 on the day, a 24th minute goal from forward Tyler Blackwood brought Indy’s perfect start to an end. However, Indiana’s Team remains on top of the USL Championship with 12 points, making it one of only two clubs sitting on double-digit points heading into Week 6 alongside Landon Donovan’s San Diego Loyal side.

Indy will be put to the test again on Wednesday against a hard-nosed Hartford Athletic team that has taken maximum points from their matches this season (3W-0L-0D). Series History

Indy Eleven and Hartford Athletic began their series history in 2019 by defending their respective home turfs. Indy got the upper hand in front of a record crowd of 20,251 during its 2019 home opener last March 30, using Nikolaj Lyngo’s own goal to post a 1-0 victory. Hartford returned the favor in Connecticut on July 13 with a 2-1 win that saw ex-Eleven striker Wojciech Wojcik score the eventual game-winner.

Indy Eleven Player to Watch | DF Paddy Barrett

Indy Eleven defender and captain Paddy Barrett has had an impressive start to his 2020 USL Championship season, playing all but six minutes possible through five matches. He currently leads the team in clearances (21) and in a four-way tie for most interceptions (7). Barrett is also second on the team in passes with a league-wide tally of 269 (third in USLC), trailing only fellow defender Neveal Hackshaw (339), with an accuracy of 77.7%.

The Irishman was a key figure in keeping Saint Louis’ chances to a minimum Sunday evening, registering three clearances and a blocked shot – one of only two total allowed on the day. While primarily tasked with marshaling the defending third, Barrett is no stranger to sparking Indy’s attacking efforts, having created a chance on goal and tested STLFC ‘keeper Kyle Morton with two curling shots near the end of the second stanza on Sunday. In fact, his seven shots are tied for third most on the Eleven and for 25th across the league.  
 

Hartford Athletic Player to Watch | MF Mads Jorgensen

Though with only one goal to his name so far in 2020, midfielder Mads Jorgensen has been one of the liveliest players for Hartford Athletic, leading the team in shots (9) and shots on target (6) through three games. Jorgensen is fourth on the team in total passes (92), completing 66.3% of those attempts.

Jorgensen’s lone goal came in Hartford’s dramatic win on Saturday over Philadelphia, with his shot being the equalizer in the eventual 3-2 victory. He has yet to record an assist, but his shooting ability is something to keep an eye on for Wednesday.

Coming off the heels of a game four days prior, Indy Eleven’s perfect start to 2020 came to an end at the feet of Saint Louis FC forward Tyler Blackwood at West Community Stadium, 1-0. The first defeat of the Eleven’s campaign did not come without a fight, as Indiana’s Team posted advantages of 19-2 in shots and 7-1 in shots on goal over the home side on the day.

With the loss, Indy Eleven (4W-1L-0D. 12 pts.), still remains on top of the Group E standings, a position it will look to hold as the team enters another two-game stretch in Week 6.

“Overall, the performance was strong, we had quite a few chances early in the first half," said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. "The goal that we lost, we’re disappointed in that because there’s a lot of things there that we could’ve done better, so we can learn and improve from that. Sometimes you come up a little short, but usually if you learn from those couple things that you can do better, you come back stronger. That’s the way we’re looking at it.”

Under the beating sun in the Gateway City, the first action of the evening came three minutes in. Eleven midfielder Cam Lindley fed an in-swinging dead ball to the top of the six-yard box that Karl Ouimette managed to get a foot on, but lacked enough force to push past STL ‘keeper Kyle Morton. Indy forward Nick Moon returned to the right of the attacking third, firing a low shot to the near post that Morton quickly came down on.

Indiana’s Team continued to test the Saint Louis (3W-1L-0D, 9 pts.) backline in the 13th minute when defender Neveal Hackshaw picked out his defending counterpart Conner Antley along the left edge of STL’s box. Antley fed another quick pass to Andrew Carleton at the top of the box for a shot, but the 20-year-old’s effort was chipped up by a defender for Morton to save once more. Another four minutes passed before the active Carleton returned atop of the left STL box with another shot on frame, a bouncing effort from distance that made for an easy save by Morton.

Despite Indy’s numerous attacking opportunities, it was Blackwood that opened the scoring in the 24th minute. A quick Saint Louis free kick near the center circle saw midfielder Wal Fall play a quick pass forward through a gap in Indy’s backline. Rounding to the left, the ball found the stride of Blackwood, who caught up with it inside the 18’ for a shot placed to the far side netting.

Indy came up big with one last big chance two minutes into first-half stoppage time, when Carleton dribbled through a group of opposing players for a shot near the top-left of STL’s penalty area, but Morton held his ground just off the line as the ball dipped to his gloves. The whistle blew shortly after, seeing Indiana’s Team down a goal at the break.

It wasn’t long after the second-half restart until Indy moved in for another attacking opportunity, Hackshaw again with another chance-creating pass from the center to forward Jeremy Rafanello. From wide right of goal, Rafanello danced between defenders for a shot from distance, but a deflection sent the ball skipping into Morton once more.

The action remained contained until the clock ticked just over the hour mark as Blackwood sent a pass skipping across Indy’s goal, unable to find teammate Russell Cicerone near the 6’ to double the lead.

Indy nearly closed the deficit in the 63rd minute when a Saint Louis giveaway gifted midfielder Cam Lindley possession in the attacking third. Lindley made a quick forward dribble before laying off to Rafanello for a heavy shot near post that Morton palmed down and quickly recovered before the ball spun over the line.

Both teams continued to put in physical performances, keeping the ball limited to the center circle until a challenge saw Indy awarded a free kick opportunity almost 25 yards out in the 85th minute. Lindley stepped up and blasted the dead ball into the STL wall, the deflection opening another opportunity this time for captain Paddy Barrett to send a shot curling just wide of the far post.

Indiana’s Team mustered one more chance three minutes into the final five minutes of stoppage time. A chain of passes from late-game substitutes Tyler Pasher and Felicien Dumas found Barrett near the top of the box for another curling shot which ended wide right of the post. The final few moments eclipsed and Indy’s perfect start to the 2020 USL Championship season came to a close at the hands of second-place Saint Louis FC, which slashed Indy’s Group E lead in half to three points.

Thanks to a screamer at the death from forward Tyler Pasher Wednesday evening, Indy Eleven snapped Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ home unbeaten streak (dating back to July 2018), winning 1-0 in a gritty back-and-forth match at Highmark Stadium. On Sunday, Indy travels again for the second time this week, this time to Saint Louis as it looks to continue its perfect run (4W-0L-0D) in the second of four 2020 meetings between the two clubs.

Indy emerged victorious in its return-to-play debut against Saint Louis, a 2-0 win at home in which Indiana’s Team dominated the proceedings for 90 minutes. Though the first half remained scoreless – not without its fair share of chances – Indy managed to break the deadlock in the 52nd minute, Pasher beating a STLFC defender 1-v-1 before slotting in the leading goal, a play preceded by a cross near the center circle by Andrew Carleton. Indy padded the lead in the 79th minute, an in-swinging dead ball from Ayoze was nodded into the net by Neveal Hackshaw at the far post for the win.

Saint Louis will enter this match off the back of a 1-0 win over Louisville City FC last weekend, with forward Tyler Blackwood grabbing the lone goal for his side in the 52nd minute. Heading in to the Week 5 weekend, Blackwood and midfielder Russell Cicerone lead the STLFC scoring charge with two goals apiece in the last three contests.
 

Series History
Thanks to its victory just two weekends ago at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indy Eleven now holds a 2W-1L-0D advantage in its all-time series with Saint Louis FC. Indiana’s Team won that first of four 2020 meetings 2-0 back on July 11, looking the better of the two sides throughout and using second half goals by Tyler Pasher (52’) and Neveal Hackshaw (79’) to secure the full three points.

After a pair of early meetings, the Group E foes will not renew acquaintances until the final weeks of the season, with Indy set to host on Sept. 23 before traveling west to end the regular season at West Community Stadium on Oct. 3.

The two-game series last season ended in a split decision with both sides holding court at home via 2-1 results. Saint Louis won both sides’ 2019 season opener on March 9 before Indiana’s Team returned the favor at Lucas Oil Stadium on Aug. 18.

Indy Eleven Player to Watch: DF Neveal Hackshaw
With Ayoze out of Wednesday’s game and newcomer Conner Antley stepping in the fill the gap, it was Neveal Hackshaw who has provided a constant presence along the left. Being one of three players on Indy’s roster to put in 90-minute shifts in each game this season, Head Coach Martin Rennie will likely look to the 2019 USL Championship Defender of the Year nominee to hold down the back line heading in to the weekend.

Hackshaw has continued to be a key player in Indy’s defensive build so far in 2020, and Wednesday’s 1-0 win at Pittsburgh was no exception. The Trinidad and Tobago international was well acquainted with the ball, claiming a team-high 82 touches throughout the evening, making him a central hub for distribution along the left flank with 56 passes to his name. Against a close-knit Riverhounds attack, Hackshaw’s situational awareness played a major role in Indy walking away with a clean sheet, having gained possession nine times, made three interceptions and a single block that eventually led to snapping the host’s home undefeated streak.

Thanks to a screamer at the death from forward Tyler Pasher Wednesday evening, Indy Eleven snapped Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ home unbeaten streak (dating back to July 2018), winning 1-0 in a gritty back-and-forth match at Highmark Stadium. On Sunday, Indy travels again for the second time this week, this time to Saint Louis as it looks to continue its perfect run (4W-0L-0D) in the second of four 2020 meetings between the two clubs.

Indy emerged victorious in its return-to-play debut against Saint Louis, a 2-0 win at home in which Indiana’s Team dominated the proceedings for 90 minutes. Though the first half remained scoreless – not without its fair share of chances – Indy managed to break the deadlock in the 52nd minute, Pasher beating a STLFC defender 1-v-1 before slotting in the leading goal, a play preceded by a cross near the center circle by Andrew Carleton. Indy padded the lead in the 79th minute, an in-swinging dead ball from Ayoze was nodded into the net by Neveal Hackshaw at the far post for the win.

Saint Louis will enter this match off the back of a 1-0 win over Louisville City FC last weekend, with forward Tyler Blackwood grabbing the lone goal for his side in the 52nd minute. Heading in to the Week 5 weekend, Blackwood and midfielder Russell Cicerone lead the STLFC scoring charge with two goals apiece in the last three contests.
 

Series History
Thanks to its victory just two weekends ago at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indy Eleven now holds a 2W-1L-0D advantage in its all-time series with Saint Louis FC. Indiana’s Team won that first of four 2020 meetings 2-0 back on July 11, looking the better of the two sides throughout and using second half goals by Tyler Pasher (52’) and Neveal Hackshaw (79’) to secure the full three points.

After a pair of early meetings, the Group E foes will not renew acquaintances until the final weeks of the season, with Indy set to host on Sept. 23 before traveling west to end the regular season at West Community Stadium on Oct. 3.

The two-game series last season ended in a split decision with both sides holding court at home via 2-1 results. Saint Louis won both sides’ 2019 season opener on March 9 before Indiana’s Team returned the favor at Lucas Oil Stadium on Aug. 18.

With Ayoze out of Wednesday’s game and newcomer Conner Antley stepping in the fill the gap, it was Neveal Hackshaw who has provided a constant presence along the left. Being one of three players on Indy’s roster to put in 90-minute shifts in each game this season, Head Coach Martin Rennie will likely look to the 2019 USL Championship Defender of the Year nominee to hold down the back line heading in to the weekend.

Hackshaw has continued to be a key player in Indy’s defensive build so far in 2020, and Wednesday’s 1-0 win at Pittsburgh was no exception. The Trinidad and Tobago international was well acquainted with the ball, claiming a team-high 82 touches throughout the evening, making him a central hub for distribution along the left flank with 56 passes to his name. Against a close-knit Riverhounds attack, Hackshaw’s situational awareness played a major role in Indy walking away with a clean sheet, having gained possession nine times, made three interceptions and a single block that eventually led to snapping the host’s home undefeated streak.

“I think it was a great performance for us tonight. “Those are the moments that are just really, really fun to be a part of,” Rennie continued. “When you are on a team or part of a staff and you see a goal that, in that minute, against obviously a very good team, it’s probably a highlight moment for Indy Eleven as a franchise. Tyler’s got the ability to do that, so it’s great to see him come through.”

In what could be classified as a tight contest throughout, the first danger presented itself after 10 minutes when Pittsburgh forward Ropapa Mensah saw two crosses from the right flank go wanting, the first a foot too heavy for Kenardo Forbes’ far-post run and the second forcing a lunging stab by Ryan James that missed left of frame.

On the 15th minute, Pittsburgh defender Skylar Thomas continued the home team’s offensive flurry, his header from 10 yards out off a corner flashing just wide left as well. Looking to stem the tide, Indy center back Paddy Barrett tried to carry over his attacking flair from recent games with an audacious look from the opposite side of the midfield stripe, the attempt to catch Riverhounds goalkeeper Tomas Gomez off his line drifting just high.

The 27th minute saw plenty of drama inside the Indy penalty area, starting when Eleven ‘keeper Evan Newton went low to come up big on Robbie Mertz’s blast set up by a give-and-go with Mark Forrest. Controversy reigned on the ensuing corner kick, which saw Kenardo Forbes’ redirect from the corner of the six ring off the underside of the crossbar, off the goaline and again off the crossbar before landing in the grateful arms of Newton. Despite pleas for a goal, center referee Eric Tattersall listened to his assistant who vigorously waved off any confirmation of a score, the two sides playing on from their scoreless stalemate as the half hour approached.

The meaningful chances dried up as the half waned until deep into six minutes of stoppage time, when Indy Eleven defender Karl Ouimette had an open header at the six off of Tyler Pasher’s set piece service, only to see the chance sent right to Gomez on his line.

The second half was a largely disjointed affair, spent mostly in the middle third and in search of a badly needed spark outside of five yellow cards – and even those were devoid of much venom, apart from Mensah’s unneeded challenge against Newton on an aerial ball in the 82nd minute.

Neither team had a moment of true attacking danger in the half until the allotted six minutes of stoppage had expired. Indy’s last-gasp counter started with Neveal Hackshaw’s clearance from the Eleven penalty spot and continued when Drew Conner played a ball into midfield towards substitute striker Jeremy Rafanello, whose challenge led to Pasher collecting the ball. A 50-yard run, one cut centrally from the right flank and three dusted defenders later, Pasher set himself up on his preferred left foot for a 25-yard lash into the upper left corner that beat Gomez’s full extension, making Indy the first team to reach double-digit points in the 2020 USL Championship season.

Indy Eleven will stay on the road for its next match this Sunday, July 26, when Indiana’s Team heads to the Gateway of the West to meet fellow Group E foe Saint Louis FC (2W-1L-0D, 6 pts.). The contest features two of the three highest scoring offenses in the 35-team USL Championship through four weeks of action, Pittsburgh’s nine goals placing second, followed by Indy with eight. Eleven forward Tyler Pasher paces the league with four goals, while Riverhounds SC attacker Kenardo Forbes paces the USLC in assists with four helpers of his own.

“Pivotal” might be too heightened a term this early in a season for a game featuring two teams sitting atop their respective groups with spotless records. However, their form out of the gates have Indy and Pittsburgh as the East’s teams to beat in 2020 (don’t take our word … USLChampionship.com’s Nicholas Murray have Indy #1 and PIT #3 in the latest Power Rankings), which makes their first of two meetings during the shortened 16-game campaign one likely to be circled for end-of-the-season reviews come October.

Of the 17 Championship squads with at least three games under their belts, Indy Eleven is the only one to start off with three victories. A win Wednesday would not only make Indiana’s Team the first in the USLC to reach double-digit points, but it would also end Pittsburgh’s 25-game home undefeated streak in regular season play – a figure Indy might be in awe of were it not for the fact it’s similar run does the Riverhounds two better at 27.

 

Series History

Indy Eleven will look to even its all-time regular season series with Riverhounds SC, its record currently standing at 1W-2L-2D (6 GF/9 GA) after meetings across the 2018 & ’19 USL Championship campaigns.

Pittsburgh also had the leg up in their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup meeting last season, a Third Round affair the Riverhounds took via a 1-0 score at Highmark Stadium on May 29. Indy Eleven exacted a bit of revenge just three days later with a dramatic 2-1 win at Lucas Oil Stadium, while Pittsburgh took the return leg in regular season play via a 3-0 scoreline back in the Steel City in September.

Despite not being grouped together, the close proximity of the two growing rivals has them playing twice during the shortened 2020 season, with Indy Eleven set to host Riverhounds SC in the Circle City on August 15.

 

Indy Eleven Player to Watch | DF Paddy Barrett

We’ve noted the voracity of the Riverhounds attack, which means the Eleven back three – anchored by the Irish captain Paddy Barrett in the middle – will likely be under sustained pressure. Expect Barrett and the Indy defense to be up for the challenge, as the squad has conceded just once in the last 254 minutes of play after a two-goal hiccup in the first 16 minutes of the season opener at Memphis 901 FC. Pittsburgh will also have to account for Barrett in the opposite final third as well, as his deft finish in last Saturday’s 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City II was preceded by eye-opening long-distance efforts in each of the last two outings.

 

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC Player to Watch | MF Kenardo Forbes

The 2019 USL Championship MVP finalist and All-League First Team performer was a thorn in the side of Indy last year, as he notched a late game-winner in their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fixture in May and tallied twice in a 3-0 win late in the regular season. The veteran Jamaican playmaker is continuing his assault on opposing goals in 2020, already notching four assists – including a trio in last Saturday’s 6-0 drubbing of Philadelphia Union II. With five chances created and three successful crosses in just two matches, Forbes has entered the restart in midseason form and will once again need to be the focal point for Indiana’s Team all over the field.

A win Wednesday would not only make Indiana’s Team the first in the USLC to reach double-digit points, but it would also end Pittsburgh’s 25-game home undefeated streak in regular season play – a figure Indy might be in awe of were it not for the fact it’s similar run does the Riverhounds two better at 27.

 

Series History

Indy Eleven will look to even its all-time regular season series with Riverhounds SC, its record currently standing at 1W-2L-2D (6 GF/9 GA) after meetings across the 2018 & ’19 USL Championship campaigns.

Pittsburgh also had the leg up in their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup meeting last season, a Third Round affair the Riverhounds took via a 1-0 score at Highmark Stadium on May 29. Indy Eleven exacted a bit of revenge just three days later with a dramatic 2-1 win at Lucas Oil Stadium, while Pittsburgh took the return leg in regular season play via a 3-0 scoreline back in the Steel City in September.

Despite not being grouped together, the close proximity of the two growing rivals has them playing twice during the shortened 2020 season, with Indy Eleven set to host Riverhounds SC in the Circle City on August 15.

 

Indy Eleven Player to Watch | DF Paddy Barrett

We’ve noted the voracity of the Riverhounds attack, which means the Eleven back three – anchored by the Irish captain Paddy Barrett in the middle – will likely be under sustained pressure. Expect Barrett and the Indy defense to be up for the challenge, as the squad has conceded just once in the last 254 minutes of play after a two-goal hiccup in the first 16 minutes of the season opener at Memphis 901 FC. Pittsburgh will also have to account for Barrett in the opposite final third as well, as his deft finish in last Saturday’s 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City II was preceded by eye-opening long-distance efforts in each of the last two outings.

 

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC Player to Watch | MF Kenardo Forbes

The 2019 USL Championship MVP finalist and All-League First Team performer was a thorn in the side of Indy last year, as he notched a late game-winner in their Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fixture in May and tallied twice in a 3-0 win late in the regular season. The veteran Jamaican playmaker is continuing his assault on opposing goals in 2020, already notching four assists – including a trio in last Saturday’s 6-0 drubbing of Philadelphia Union II. With five chances created and three successful crosses in just two matches, Forbes has entered the restart in midseason form and will once again need to be the focal point for Indiana’s Team all over the field.

Indy Eleven continued its stellar return to play in 2020, using goals by in-form striker Tyler Pasher and captain Paddy Barrett to post a 2-1 win over fellow Group E foe Sporting Kansas City II. The game-winner for Barrett marked the center back’s first goal of the season, while Pasher claimed sole possession of the top spot on the USL Championship’s goal-scoring chart with his fourth goal of the young campaign.

The win for Indy Eleven (3W-0L-0D, 9 pts.) was its tenth consecutive home victory in regular season action at Lucas Oil Stadium, a stretch that began last July 20. The three-point result also extended the third longest home undefeated streak in USL Championship history to 27 games (20W-0L-7D), a run that exceeded the two-year mark back on July 7.

From the onset of the match it was Indiana’s Team applying most of the pressure, its first chance coming in the opening minute when Pasher’s shot was blocked after he sprinted onto Andrew Carleton’s ball down the left. Sporting wasn’t totally bereft of chances early on, but saw a pair of efforts go over frame in the 4th and 8th minutes.

Indy Eleven were forced into an early change, as Ayoze had to be subbed off after picking up an 11th minute injury. He was replaced by 2019 USL League One Defender of the Year Conner Antley, who marked his official Indy Eleven debut by slotting into the departing Spaniard’s position at left wing back.

The front trio of Carleton, Pasher and Nick Moon linked up smartly in the 17th minute, playing three quick passes between them before Pasher forced a save out of SKC ‘keeper Brooks Thompson, the 18-year-old native of Floyds Knobs, Ind., who was making his second pro start. Carleton’s continued activity in the final third eventually drew a foul and a dangerous free kick opportunity tin the 35th minute, but defender Carl Haworth curled the ensuing dead ball just high. 

Indy Eleven finally broke the deadlock on the stroke of 39 minutes. Moon used some fancy footwork to break forward into the box before letting a strike rip that Thompson could only parry. The ball fell into the path of Pasher, who coolly slotted home for his league-leading fourth goal of the current USL Championship campaign. It marked the fifth straight game in which the Canadian striker hit the back of the net, dating back to last year’s Eastern Conference Playoffs Semifinal at Nashville SC.

The second 45 minutes was a tenser affair and started when SKC forward Wilson Harris dragged his 46th minute shot just wide of Indy goalkeeper Evan Newton’s left post. Indy responded three minutes later through Pasher’s venomous shot at Thompson that was well-saved. Carleton had himself a great chance in the 52nd minute, hitting a winding shot off the half-volley that was also saved.  

Sporting KC II would answer right back, this time with the equalizing goal in the 53rd minute. The often dangerous Fredinho Mompremier squeezed a perfectly weighted through ball between Barrett and Newton that allowed Harris to round the Indy netminder and finish on an open frame, leveling the score at 1-1.

Sporting’s counter-punch immediately gave the Eleven attack some added urgency. Moon came inches away from his first Indy goal in the 57th minute, sending a header crashing off Thompson from just three yards out. While the SKC ‘keeper didn’t know much about it, his reaction prevented a sure goal, pushing it up into the bar before seeing the danger cleared by a defender on the goalline.

Carmel native Cam Lindley came on for Indy Eleven at 63 minutes, the former Guerin Catholic H.S. standout becoming the second debutant for the home club on Saturday night.

The deadlock was broken by Indy once again through a sublime effort from the captain Barrett in the 67th minute. The defender received a neat layoff from sub Ilija Ilic in the box, which the Irishman curled first time past Thompson for a 2-1 advantage.

With 20 minutes to go, Indy looked to increase the tempo of the match. Successive shots from Pasher and Lindley sprang Thompson into action to keep the score at 2-1. Pasher even lent a hand on the defensive front, chasing down the striding Duval Wapiwo and clearing a dangerous chance out for a corner, which SKC wasted.  

Kansas City had an extremely dangerous opportunity in the 84th minute, but Newton made himself big to block Wapiwo’s effort as he tried to round the goalkeeper. Mompremier followed the save with a cracking strike from the rebound that found itself careening into the stands.  

At the end of the 90, the ref introduced eight more minutes of stoppage time, but some stout group defending inside and around the Eleven penalty area allowed the home side to stave off the SKC comeback and grab the full three points.

Next up for Indy Eleven comes its first two road games of the USL Championship’s restart phase, beginning with a massive Wednesday evening affair against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. The 7:00 p.m. kickoff will air exclusively nationwide on ESPN2. INDIANAPOLIS (Friday, July 17, 2020) – Indy Eleven continued its focus on the development of Hoosier homegrown talent with today’s signing of Crown Point-native Alex Svetanoff.

Per club policy, terms of the USL Academy contract that brings the 17-year-old goalkeeper south from “The Region” to the Circle City will not be disclosed. In joining the club as a USL Academy signing – Indy Eleven’s sixth such prospect since the start of the 2019 season – Svetanoff retains his future NCAA eligibility.

Svetanoff has been training with Indiana’s Team in recent weeks and will be available for selection starting with tomorrow night’s 7:00 p.m. contest against Sporting Kansas City II. Svetanoff began his youth soccer career with Indiana Elite in his hometown of Crown Point before jumping south to Westfield to go between the sticks for Indiana Fire Academy in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) system, appearing in 11 matches during their 2019-20 campaign, including nine starts. Svetanoff has represented Indiana Fire at every level beginning with their U15’s back in 2017-18, appearing in 30 total matches for their various sides. Before joining the Indiana Fire Academy, Svetanoff also enjoyed a standout freshman year at Crown Point H.S., conceding only two goals during his 13 starts.

“Alex is a talented player with great athleticism and a great personality – he seems to already be a really good fit with our group,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “This will be a great situation for him to serve as our third goalkeeper and get some valuable minutes in during training while pushing our top two ‘keepers.”

Each has enjoyed positive starts to the 2020 USL Championship season and have the stats to prove it – both players have grabbed one goal and one assist from 180 minutes of play thus far, with Haworth assisting Ayoze’s opener against Memphis back in March. Haworth got himself on the scoresheet in the same match, scoring Indy Eleven’s fourth goal in the 4-2 comeback victory.

Ayoze got his first assist of the season in last Saturday’s home opener against Saint Louis, a left-footed in-swinging dead ball from the right flank that met Neveal Hackshaw’s head at the far post. Together, the pair have also contributed nine key passes in the two matches so far and place in the league’s top 20 in the category in the early going. Ayoze also leads the team in total passes (129) and has completed a tick over 81% of them.

The freedom Ayoze and Haworth have in getting forward has been a focal point in Indy’s game plan. By overlapping the inside runs of forwards Pasher and Nick Moon, the fullbacks are getting into dangerous areas to whip in crosses.

 

Sporting Kansas City II Player to Watch | FW Fredinho Monpremier

Although SKC failed to score against Charlotte (Sporting’s notch on the scoreboard in the 2-1 loss came via an Indepedence own goal), it was not toothless in the attacking third. Forward Fredinho Monpremier got himself involved as much as possible, creating three chances and taking two shots (one on target).

The Haitian striker also brought his teammates into the match, completing 82% of his 39 passes, including 11/15 going forward with the ball. Monpremier will have to carry much of the attack as his striking counterpart Ze Pedro was released from the club on July 2.

Carleton Given the Keys

Eleven forward Andrew Carleton gave fans a glimpse at his promise against Saint Louis last Saturday, operating as a true number 10 through the match, a position that been constant variable in previous seasons. It was Carleton’s 40-yard pass that led to the team’s first goal, an immaculate banana-curve through ball that striking partner Tyler Pasher latched onto and buried in the back of the net for the game’s first goal on the stroke of 51st minute. Carleton set up another good chance in the 69’ by again playing in Pasher down the left, whose square ball into the box was teed up over the bar by Nick Moon. 

Having struggled in his debut back in March, Saturday was a good benchmark of the talent Carleton, who is currently on loan from Atlanta United FC (MLS), possesses. Carded early (13’) against Memphis, he was eventually subbed off before the team’s historic comeback began. The 20-year-old completed almost 80% of his 18 passes against Memphis. On Saturday, while his accuracy dropped nearly 10 percent, he was much more involved with 26 total passes and two chances created, which included his aforementioned jaw-dropping assist.

Carleton was lively all match, popping up anywhere on the pitch to receive the ball. In a high-octane offense such as Indy’s, it’s an essential role to fill. His ability to positively link-up defense and attack from the middle of the park allowed Pasher and Moon to focus solely on goal-scoring, which paid off clearly. When Carleton got the ball, he looked to quickly move it forward, rarely playing a sideways pass. His influence will be key for an Indy team looking to provide a more consistent attack than last year’s respectable but middle-of-the-conference output of 48 goals.

By the time of his substitution at 70’, Carleton had run himself ragged, putting in a shift on both ends of the pitch. There’s some real energy and chirpiness in his style of play, which endeared him to the home crowd. He went off to the applause of his newfound supporters, who will be hoping his intensity remains throughout the rest of the 2020 campaign.

 

Pasher Setting Pace in USL Championship

It goes without saying, but Tyler Pasher remains the focal point of the Indy attack, collecting his third league goal of the season Saturday night. Combining speed, footwork and a great shot, Pasher unloaded on the Saint Louis defense, scoring his goal and putting another FIVE shots on target, one of which beamed off the far post. He also created three other chances for his teammates, ultimately earning him one of Indy’s three spots on the league’s Team of the Week in Week 3.

His rapport with Carleton will also be something to keep an eye on the. The two attackers shared some banter on Twitter after the match, so clearly there is confidence in that relationship out on the pitch. It’s a camaraderie that will need to continue flourishing as the season progresses.

Since arriving in the Circle City in 2018, Pasher has become one of the top players in the USL Championship. He scored 13 goals last season (35 appearances) along with completing 80% of his passes and his form looks to have carried over to 2020. With Moon and Carleton on the pitch, Pasher will have a lot more freedom to make runs into the box along the left flank, something he did all match versus Saint Louis.

 

It's a Team Effort

While Pasher made the biggest splash going forward on Saturday, the whole team was quite involved in attacking play. Based on average positioning, Indy had only three players – Paddy Barrett, Karl Ouimette and Tyler Gibson – that weren’t across the midfield line, and even they weren’t strangers to the final third. On one of Barrett’s few ventures forward, he came close to scoring with a supreme 40-yard strike that stung the palms of STL ‘keeper Kyle Morton, while Gibson found himself with space 15 yards from goal just minutes later.

Head Coach Martin Rennie’s 3-5-2 stresses involvement in the final third from the wingbacks, which was prevalent the entire match.
