MEMPHIS (Saturday, March 7, 2020) – For Indy Eleven, it wasn’t how it started its 2020 USL Championship opener, it was how it finished it, as the Boys in Blue put four unanswered on the board after spotting Memphis an early lead to post a 4-2 victory at AutoZone Park.

Indy Eleven’s 2019 leading scorer, forward Tyler Pasher, picked up where he left off with equalizing and game-winning goals midway through the second half that were assisted by new strike mate Nick Moon. The wing back tandem of Ayoze and Carl Haworth opened and finished the scoring, respectively, to give Indy Eleven an emphatic road win to start a promising campaign on the right foot after some early adversity.

“I’ve always thought the best team-building event you can ever do is to go and win a game, especially on the road, and that’s what we did tonight. Everybody enjoys winning, and especially a comeback win like that,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “Scoring four goals on the road – I don’t think we’ve done that since I’ve been coaching here. There were a lot of things there tonight that can help bring the team together and obviously we’re just getting started and have a lot to look forward to.”

It was Newton coming up big again just minutes before the half when he used both hands to parry away Memphis striker Duane Muckette’s breakaway attempt from near the penalty spot. That stop would prove big as Indy clawed one back just before the three minutes of added time elapsed via Ayoze, who ran onto Haworth’s square ball at the top of the area and lashed a low, first-time blast to the right post that gave recently unretired Memphis goalkeeper Tim Howard no chance and halved the Indy deficit.

“First of all, full credit to Memphis because they started the game and with a lot of energy, and I think they caught us cold a little bit. They were 2-nil up very early on and showed us things we definitely could improve upon,” Rennie said. “But even at 2-nil down I still felt confident that we would come back and do well in the game, and it was really important to get the goal just before halftime because that gave us a bit of momentum going into the break.

A very active second half began with Indy getting the better chances, first Pasher seeing a low shot flash just past the left post in the 51st minute and Yeferson Contreras having a header saved by a diving Howard a few minutes later. Minutes after coming on for Contreras in the 63rd minute, Moon would rue missing contact on a through ball that put him in alone on Howard, but the Eleven debutant would soon make amends by assisting on a pair of vital goals by Pasher.

The Canadian forward did the heavy lifting himself in the 69th minute, accepting Moon’s through ball at the midfield stripe and racing inside the area before beating Howard low to even things at 2-2. Just three minutes later it was Moon taking advantage of a defensive miscue at the edge of the final third and carrying into the area before playing an early cross to the six, where Pasher easily swept past a stranded Howard to put Indy in the lead at 3-2. In the 83rd minute it was Pasher playing provider, his cross from the left going through the area and meeting the late run of Haworth, who smashed first time from near the corner of the six to give Indiana’s Team a vital insurance tally. Rennie was indeed correct, as tonight’s opening game of Indy Eleven’s seventh season marked the first time the club had scored four times away from home.

“As we came out in the second half thought we improved a lot, had better possession and obviously finished better with three scores, and we could have had even more," Rennie said. "Hopefully this will help us brighten up and start the next game better, and overall we can still take a lot from this game in how we finished it off.”

Indy Eleven will continue its month-long road trip to begin the 2020 USL Championship regular season next Saturday, March 14, when the Boys in Blue travel west to face Sporting Kansas City II. Kickoff from Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan., is set for 5:00 p.m. for a match that fans can watch live on ESPN+.

At long last, the Boys in Blue return to regular season action. Indy Eleven will make its 2020 USL Championship debut on the road at Memphis 901 FC this Saturday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. Fans can stream the season opener via ESPN+ or follow along on the @IndyElevenLive Twitter feed, presented by Honda

I’m very pleased with how preseason went. We’re at an advantage with the number of players we have returning from last year, they already had a head start on what we were doing, which made it easier to incorporate the new players,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “Now, we’re just looking forward to the season. There’s a lot of determination in the group, a lot of competition, so the guys are sharp.”

Indy Eleven finished third on the USL Championship’s Eastern Conference table (19W-9L-6D) last season, a significant jump from its eighth-place finish during the club’s inaugural USL Championship season in 2018. Coming off the heels of the most successful season six-year history – which included breaking club records in regular season wins (19), standings points (63) away wins (6), home wins (13) and its first two victories in USL Championship play – Indy will look to pick up where it left off in the season opener at Memphis’ AutoZone Park.

While Indy will be looking for another shot at the USL Championship Final in 2020, Memphis will be looking for a shot at redemption after ending its inaugural 2019 season 9W-18L-7D (34 pts; 15th place) and on a four-game losing streak.

Memphis kept busy in the offseason as Head Coach Tim Mulqueen and Sporting Director Tim Howard teamed up to rework the team’s active roster. Of the club’s 20-man roster, only nine are returnees from the previous year. Eleven new faces have joined 901 FC ahead of the 2020 season, including the surprise announcement Wednesday that Howard will come out of retirement and add goalkeeper to his Co-owner and Sporting Director titles.

 

SERIES HISTORY

The two-game series against Memphis 901 FC last season ended wholly in Indy’s favor, the Boys in Blue going 2W-0L-0D with a pair of shutouts (6 GF; 0 GA) against the first-year team.

The first ever meeting against Memphis came in enemy territory on June 8, 2019. A late goal in the first half by former Boys in Blue forward Thomas Enevoldsen edged the Eleven into the lead before two unanswered strikes by Kim Do-Heon and Tyler Pasher in the second half secured the win.

Indy welcomed 901 FC to Lucas Oil Stadium for the second 2019 fixture on October 5. Indy found the goal of the evening in the 13th minute by Cristian Novoa before Karl Ouimette doubled the lead nine minutes later. Like many games last season, it was Pasher who had the last laugh, tallying the game’s third and final goal in the 77th minute.

Midfielder Cam Lindley was a staple in the Memphis 901 FC back line while on loan from Orlando City SC (MLS) last season, but the Carmel, Ind. native has brought his talents to the Circle City for 2020.

There wasn’t a teammate the 25-year-old couldn’t get the ball to last season, completing nearly 93% of his 1,436 passes through the midfield, more than anyone else on the squad. Lindley’s selflessness was a crucial piece in Coach Mulqueen’s offensive setup, also leading the team in assists (7) and chances created (56), in addition to notching a goal for himself.

After announcing his retirement from professional soccer nearly five months ago, Memphis 901 FC announced Wednesday afternoon that the USMNT legend Howard will indeed join the roster for the 2020 USL Championship season.

Howard spent what he thought was his last year playing professionally in goal for Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids. Howard made 25 appearances in the Rapids’ Starting XI in 2019, registering 73 saves, five shutouts and a 1.84 goals against average.

Howard has become one of the most recognizable names in the international soccer landscape and is arguably the best goalkeeper the United States has ever produced. The 40-year-old has amassed 584 club appearances (185 MLS, 399 English Premier League); 1,764 saves (772 MLS, 992 EPL) and 170 clean sheets (38 MLS, 132 EPL) over his 22-year career. Howard’s national team career is just as impressive, his 121 caps and 42 clean sheets from 2002-2017 including appearances for the U.S. during the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

GAME #2 HALFTIME UPDATE

Similar to this morning's game against UIndy, Indy Eleven would go up early in the nightcap against the Hoosiers, this time via an Ayoze conversion from the penalty spot in the 7th minute. After forward Andrew Carleton went down under contact inside the area, the veteran Spaniard pinged his spot kick off the left post and in to put Indy up 1-0. 

Carleton nearly doubled the advantage with a smash off the crossbar in the 17th minute. The best chance of the remainder of the half came via a pair of defenders near the half hour mark when Karl Ouimette nearly deflected in Paddy Barrett's short cross. IU's last defenders did well to recover and nullify a handful of other rushes towards the Hoosiers area.

 

FULL TIME/SECOND HALF RECAP

The second half saw the chances that went wanting in the first half converted by both sides early on, the squads both scoring twice within an active eight minute span around the hour mark. Indy’s Cam Lindley started the barrage with a rebound on the doorstep in the 58th minute, but a pair of goals by IU in the 60th and 62nd minutes, the first coming off an own goal and the second off a sliding finish near the six that evened things suddenly at 2-2. However, Nick Moon would draw Indy’s second PK of the match in the 64th minute, and Ayoze would convert once again from the spot a minute later to retake the lead for the Eleven.

Indy midfielder Tyler Gibson would double the advantage in the 75th minute with a touch on of Carl Haworth’s solid cross into the area from the right sideline. Similar to this morning’s game against UIndy, Indy Eleven would go up early in the nightcap against the Hoosiers, this time via an Ayoze conversion from the penalty spot in the 7th minute. After forward Andrew Carleton went down under contact inside the area, the veteran Spaniard pinged his spot kick off the left post and in to put Indy up 1-0. 

Carleton nearly doubled the advantage with a smash off the crossbar in the 17th minute. The best chance of the remainder of the half came via a pair of defenders near the half hour mark when Karl Ouimette nearly deflected in Paddy Barrett’s short cross. IU’s last defenders did well to recover and nullify a handful of other rushes towards the Hoosiers area.

The second half saw the chances that went wanting in the first half converted by both sides early on, the squads both scoring twice within an active eight minute span around the hour mark. Indy’s Cam Lindley started the barrage with a rebound on the doorstep in the 58th minute, but a pair of goals by IU in the 60th and 62nd minutes, the first coming off an own goal and the second off a sliding finish near the six that evened things suddenly at 2-2. However, Nick Moon would draw Indy’s second PK of the match in the 64th minute, and Ayoze would convert once again from the spot a minute later to retake the lead for the Eleven.

Indy midfielder Tyler Gibson would double the advantage in the 75th minute with a touch on of Carl Haworth’s solid cross into the area from the right sideline. Falling one game short of the USL Championship Final, a shot at redemption in 2020 has been on the mind of Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie since the final whistle last November. With 16 members of Indiana’s Team returning from last season and only eight new faces joining the mix, the Boys in Blue have spent the offseason putting in the paces to prepare for their 2020 campaign.

“I think we are looking really good, thanks in large part to everybody taking care of themselves in the offseason,” said Rennie “We want to continue to improve in some areas, especially in the final third and in our pressing and counter-pressing, but overall, I feel like we are right on track.”

While the focus has been on returning to match fitness ahead of the season, existing team chemistry has played a major role in Indy’s preseason run. The Boys in Blue are currently undefeated with a spotless 3W-0D-0L record during their preseason schedule, giving Coach Rennie a peek at his team’s potential.

“It makes a big difference because everybody is familiar with each other – how we play, train and what we expect – so it means we can take things to a higher level and focus on areas that we normally need to improve upon because we know we already have a solid foundation,” Rennie said. “It also allows us more time to spend with individual players to develop their game and help them improve.”

For returning midfielder and captain Matt Watson, consistency on the roster allows the team to improve at a quicker rate.

“Having the core come back should give us an earlier advantage throughout the season,” said Watson. “Adding extra pieces where we need them is easy because we can bring those new players into the culture and show them how we do things here a lot easier.”

Although results in preseason carry no weight in regular season contests, Watson believes that strong performances early on set the team up for long-term success.

“The preseason is really important on the mental side of things, helping us get ready for the first games,” Watson said. “We have a stretch of away games to start the season, which we know the other teams are going to be fired up, so we need to into those games with the same energy, and I believe the preseason is going to set us up for that.”

The season, which begins Saturday, March 7, at Memphis 901 FC, will be forward Carl Haworth’s first with Indy Eleven after spending the last six seasons with former rival Ottawa Fury FC. Despite being new to the club, the Canadian international brings a wealth of experience to what many consider to already be the deepest squad in the team’s seven-year history.

“It’s a great experience [joining Indy Eleven], maybe not being a guy who’s been in the organization for a while, but with knowing the league so well and being around for the number of seasons that I have,” said Haworth. “I have a lot of experience that I can bring, a lot of leadership qualities that I can bring and hopefully help elevate them to the next level along with the other new guys we brought in.”

Indy Eleven will finish its preseason campaign this Saturday in a doubleheader at the team’s training home of the Grand Park Events Center and Sports Complex in Westfield. The Circle City Men’s College Showcase will see Indiana’s Team face off against the University of Indianapolis (10:00 a.m.) and Indiana University (8:00 p.m.). Per club policy, terms of both players’ agreements will not be released.

It’s not every day that you get to coach the talent that these guys have and we’re looking forward to helping them develop in their career,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “Fans are going to be excited for what these players can bring to the table.”

Contreras, a native of Cucuta, Colombia, came up as a top prospect through América de Cali’s Under-17 system in 2017, ending the season as their league’s goal leader. The following season, Contreras graduated to América’s Under-20 squad, where he had another impressive showing in regular season and national tournament play. Contreras’ stellar performances earned him a call-up to América’s first team at the start of the 2018-19 season, making two Colombian top flight (Caregoría Primera A) appearances before going on loan to Orsomarso SC (Categoría Primera B) in August 2019. Now, 20-year-old Contreras arrives to the Circle City on loan for the 2020 USL Championship season.

“I'm very happy to have signed with such an important club like Indy Eleven. I want to do everything I can for the club to be successful and reach the USL Championship Final,” Contreras said. “Like every forward, my aspiration is to be the leading goal scorer, but my ultimate goal is to help the team anywhere I can so that we can lift a trophy at the end of the season.”

A native of Delran Township, New Jersey, Rafanello returns stateside after catching Coach Rennie’s attention in recent weeks during Indy Eleven’s 2020 Open Tryouts and preseason run. The 19-year-old is a product of Philadelphia Union’s youth academy, which saw the newcomer make two appearances for Philadelphia Union II (USL Championship) in 2018. Rafanello played for the Penn State Nittany Lions in 2018, scoring three goals in 18 appearances, before signing with Danish 2nd Division side FC Helsingør in July 2019.

Indy Eleven tallied its second win in three days following a 2-1 victory against Detroit City FC Friday afternoon at Grand Park in Westfield. The preseason victory over Detroit City was Indy’s third in as many tries after Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Saint Louis FC and last week’s 3-2 win against Bridges FC.

“It was a good dominating performance. I think overall, we played well,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “We created lots of chances and scored a couple of good goals, and probably had another really good goal that should have stood that would have added to the score line. We can be pretty happy with where we are at this moment in the preseason.”

The first half saw Indy Eleven control the ball efficiently, continuing to create plays in the attacking third. The chances were rewarded in the 12th minute when Indy trialist Michael Scott was fouled in DCFC's penalty area, leading the official to award a penalty kick to the home side. Forward Ilija Ilic stepped up to the spot, striking the ball low and past Detroit's goaltender to push the Boys in Blue out front. Detroit had a chance to equalize, but a shot that bounced off the post was blown dead in the 34th minute after the offside flag went up.

Indiana’s Team extend their lead off a low finish from defender Conner Antley seven minutes into the second half, set up by a beautiful cutback inside DCFC’s box to shake the opposing defender. A line change led to a beautiful goal by forward Andrew Carleton off a pass from striking partner Tyler Pasher in the 65th minute, only to see it negated by the offside flag. Detroit City cut the lead to one in the 77th minute after a screamer from 30 yards out found the left side netting, just out of reach for Eleven goalkeeper Evan Newton to handle. However, solid defensive play down the stretch helped the Boys in Blue continue their preseason undefeated (3W-0L-0D).

“[Detroit] scored a really good goal, but it was a bit out of the blue as they didn’t have many chances on the day,” said Rennie. “There are definitely areas where we are still trying to improve and do much more in, but that’s what the preseason is for. The guys are looking better and sharper every day, and it’s all about improving so that we are ready to go once the results begin to count.”

The Boys in Blue will enjoy a nice break before resuming their preseason slate with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 29 at Grand Park. The Circle City Men’s College Showcase will see the squad face off against the University of Indianapolis (10:00 a.m.) and Indiana University (8:00 p.m.). The chances were rewarded in the 12th minute when Indy trialist Michael Scott was fouled in DCFC’s penalty area, leading the official to award a penalty kick to the home side. Forward Ilija Ilic stepped up to the spot, striking the ball low and past Detroit’s goaltender to push the Boys in Blue out front. Detroit had a chance to equalize, but a shot that bounced off the post was blown dead in the 34th minute after the offside flag went up.

Indiana’s Team extend their lead off a low finish from defender Conner Antley seven minutes into the second half, set up by a beautiful cutback inside DCFC’s box to shake the opposing defender. A line change led to a beautiful goal by forward Andrew Carleton off a pass from striking partner Tyler Pasher in the 65th minute, only to see it negated by the offside flag. Detroit City cut the lead to one in the 77th minute after a screamer from 30 yards out found the left side netting, just out of reach for Eleven goalkeeper Evan Newton to handle. However, solid defensive play down the stretch helped the Boys in Blue continue their preseason undefeated (3W-0L-0D).

“[Detroit] scored a really good goal, but it was a bit out of the blue as they didn’t have many chances on the day,” said Rennie. “There are definitely areas where we are still trying to improve and do much more in, but that’s what the preseason is for. The guys are looking better and sharper every day, and it’s all about improving so that we are ready to go once the results begin to count.”

The Boys in Blue will enjoy a nice break before resuming their preseason slate with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 29 at Grand Park. The Circle City Men’s College Showcase will see the squad face off against the University of Indianapolis (10:00 a.m.) and Indiana University (8:00 p.m.). Indy Eleven used an early second-half goal by forward Andrew Carleton to post a 1-0 win over Saint Louis FC in a preseason exhibition contested Wednesday afternoon at Grand Park in Westfield. The victory over Saint Louis – the lone fellow USL Championship foe on Indy Eleven’s preseason calendar this year – gave the Boys in Blue their second exhibition win in as many tries after last Saturday’s 3-2 triumph over Bridges FC.

“We saw a lot of the things we were looking in training and saw some improvement from the game we played on Saturday, especially defensively. We had a lot of the ball and created a lot of chances, especially in the second half, so overall it was a good performance,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “It’s preseason, so there’s always room for improvement, and I thought that maybe we could have taken some more of our chances better and made the game a little more straightforward. It was a good win and it gives us a good gauge against a team from our league that we think is going to be a solid competitor in the Eastern Conference.”

The early going saw Indy Eleven with the bulk of the possession and the best chance off the foot of midfielder Carl Haworth, whose 19th minute shot was snagged by Saint Louis ‘keeper Kyle Morton. Haworth was in the spotlight again in the 24th minute when his contact on Russell Cicerone inside the Eleven penalty area didn’t earn a point to the spot, that coming just seconds after Eleven forward Nick Moon felt he had a PK claim of his own after a joint challenge from STL defenders Sam Fink and Paris Gee.

The active Cicerone took aim in the latter part of the stanza, first missing just wide right from distance in the 34th minute before lashing a 41st minute shot near post at Indy goalkeeper Evan Newton, who did well to parry over the bar with both hands. Indy Eleven didn’t have to look far for the latest addition to its roster, as Indiana’s Team today acquired midfielder and Carmel native Cam Lindley.  Pending league and federation approval, the Orlando City SC product will become the 22nd player signed by the Boys in Blue ahead of their 2020 season. Per club policy, financial terms of the contract that brings Lindley to the Circle City will not be released.

“Cam Lindley is one of the most talented players to come out of Central Indiana in recent years, so it’s very nice to be able to bring him home," said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “Cam brings great technical ability and creativity to an already talented and very deep corps of midfielders. I'm sure our fans will join me in welcoming Cam to Indy Eleven.”

Lindley, 22, was a standout for Guerin Catholic High School (2016 graduate) and numerous Indiana Fire Juniors squads before playing two years collegiately at the University of North Carolina from 2016-17. Following a 2017 sophomore season that saw him rack up seven goals and 13 assists, the ACC Midfielder of the Year award, and a First-Team All-ACC Team honor, Lindley turned professional and was signed by Major League Soccer’s Orlando City SC ahead of the 2018 season.

“I am super excited to be coming home and playing for my hometown team in front of my friends and family,” said Lindley. “I know playing for Indy Eleven will help me grow as a player, and I am looking forward to being a part of one of the top clubs in the USL Championship.”

Farias’ signing with Indy Eleven last February from Brazilian second division side Esporte Clube Sao Bento marked the first stop in his professional career outside of his native country. After making his Indy debut off the bench on March 15 at Charlotte Independence, Farias started 11 of his remaining 12 appearances and tallied three assists, tied for fifth most on the squad in regular season play. A knee injury suffered on September 4 against New York forced the 25-year-old right back to miss the last two months of the regular season and Indy’s three-game run in the USL Championship Playoffs.

The departure of Farias gives Indy Eleven 21 players currently under contract during the team’s ongoing preseason training camp, which began Monday at its training headquarters at Grand Park in Westfield. Indiana’s Team will officially begin its seventh season of play – and its third in USL Championship action – on Saturday, March 7, at Memphis 901 FC.

Seats for Indy Eleven’s 17-game home schedule at Lucas Oil Stadium are currently available via four ticketing options – Full Season Memberships, Half Season Packages, 5-Game Partial Season Plans and Group Tickets – all of which include a ticket for the home opener on Saturday, April 4, against arch-rival Louisville City FC (7:00 p.m. kickoff).
