After every game in 2018, www.indyeleven.com’s Drew Kamaski will give his three takeaways from the performance of the “Boys in Blue.” This week's edition comes after "Indiana's Team" registered another three points on the road against North Carolina FC. 

Owain Saves Three Points

Wales native Owain Fon Williams recorded his second clean sheet with the “Boys in Blue” in a 1-0 victory on a rainy Saturday night in North Carolina. Fon Williams secured the three points after stretching to save North Carolina FC midfielder Kyle Bekker’s penalty in the 93rd minute. The Welshman recorded three saves including the penalty and also saw the crossbar come to his rescue twice helping “Indiana’s Team” to keep NCFC from finding the back of the net. The clutch save is certainly a candidate for USL’s Save of the Week in Week 4.

This is Fon Williams’ first season with Indy Eleven, who’s on loan from Scottish Championship club Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The successful oil painter brings a wealth of experience to the “Boys in Blue” after accumulating 71 appearances with Inverness including the team’s first Europa League fixture. Fon Williams also appeared on the squad for Wales’ International team in the 2016 UEFA Euros, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament. Look for Indy Eleven’s man between the posts to bring success on the pitch, along with on the canvas.

 

Pasher’s First Finish

A key piece to  Indy Eleven’s offense throughout the first three games has been Tyler Pasher’s influence on the left wing. His incredible pace and quick footwork make it difficult to contain the Newcastle United youth product. The Canadian International could be found making overlapping and darting runs down the wing against North Carolina FC, swinging in crosses and taking on defenders with his dangerous left foot.

Pasher’s speed down the wing freed him up in the 15th minute. Indy Eleven forward Justin Braun played a pass that led Pasher into to the box, who took one touch and slotted home a shot to the bottom right corner. Pasher’s first goal of the season secured three points on the road and saw “Indiana’s Team” jump to seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

Through his first three games, Pasher has influenced the game on both ends of the field netting one goal and completing three-quarters of passes played. Pasher is also yet to miss a tackle in the defensive third of the field, successfully completing all five defensive tackles.

 

Braun is Back

“Boys in Blue” veteran Justin Braun is back in the starting eleven for the first time in a long time. The Indy Eleven forward was sidelined after he sustained a season-ending injury in August of last year. The start against North Carolina FC marks his first since the injury. Braun made appearances in “Indiana’s Team’s” first two games as a substitute, but found himself on the starting team sheet due to the suspension of teammate Jack McInerney. 

Braun performed well in his first start assisting on the game’s only goal. The forward played a perfectly weighted, diagonal ball from the right side of North Carolina’s half that found the streaking Tyler Pasher on the left wing. Pasher’s first touch played him into the opposition’s box where he guided his shot past North Carolina FC keeper Alex Tambakis.

Braun was replaced in the 67th minute by Ben Speas after a strong first start. The assist is the 11th all-time with the “Boys in Blue” for Braun.

Indy Eleven collect three points on the road for the second time this season as they lead North Carolina to their third consecutive loss in a 1-0 victory. A lone goal from “New in Blue” midfielder Tyler Pasher in the first half and a massive save from veteran goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams from a penalty in second half stoppage time sees Indy Eleven register another win in their inaugural USL season on a cold, wet night in Cary, North Carolina.

The “Boys in Blue” get the first look in the opening moments of the match. In the 2nd minute, Eleven midfielder Nico Matern attempts to link up with forward Justin Braun in front of North Carolina’s goal from the left sideline. The pass to Braun looked clear before cutting between his legs during his fall from a tackle by NCFC’s Marcel Kandziora. The play ended when Carolina goalkeeper Alex Tambakis collected before charging XI forward Soony Saad could get another touch. Indy would continue asking questions before getting their next big chance minutes later.

In the 8th minute, Braun found himself in another goal scoring opportunity nearly 10 yards out from goal. A through pass towards the center of NCFC’s defending half from Eleven midfielder Nathan Lewis split almost most all of Carolina’s defense as Braun sprinted to track the ball down. As Braun got behind the ball, a slight touch from NCFC’s Aaron Guillen set the striker’s angle off kilter before winding back for the attempt. The ball flew from the right edge of the home side’s 18-yard box towards goal, but Tambakis flung his right foot out to nip the ball out and around the post. The attack died once again, but Indy’s time to shine was coming.

North Carolina began to ask questions of their own as Indy racked up their chances. In the 9th minute, NCFC’s captain Austin da Luz and midfielder Kyle Bekker found themselves around 10 yards from Indy’s goal while in possession of the ball. Da Luz cut a quick pass left to Bekker, but the NCFC newcomer took a heavy first touch and sent the ball out of play for a goal kick. It was this close call that pressured Indy to spring into the lead.

“Indiana’s Team’s” found their lead in the 15th minute. Braun carried possession towards the right side of NCFC’s keeper’s box before sliding the ball to the left across the wet turf to Pasher. Unopposed, Pasher registered his first Indy Eleven goal from just outside the top-left of Carolina’s box into the lower right goal post. The early lead would be contested several times throughout the night, but Pasher’s goal would eventually see Indy collect all three points.

North Carolina continued to look for an equalizer in the first half. NCFC forward Daniel Rios got his first of several chances in the 30th minute, after a quick turn and run away from Matern resulted in a shot from the top left of Indy’s box. The ball curved towards the center of the goal before smashing the crossbar and flying towards the stands for an Eleven goal kick. Rios got his second chance in the early moments of first half stoppage time. From the left corner, Bekker beamed the ball straight into the center of Indy’s box where Rios collected and fired his second attempt. And just like his first, Rios’ shot hammered into the crossbar once again, this time deflecting out and away from the goal.

The home team would find their next close call in the 70th minute following a series of quick passes. NCFC forward Donovan Ewolo invaded Indy’s 18-yard line followed by a back heel pass to defender Steven Miller. From there, Miller sent another quick pass to da Luz outside the left corner of Indy’s 6-yard box. Da Luz hit his shot at angle, but the only net the ball found was the side netting out of bounds. It was less than 10 minutes before Indy attempted to close out the match.

“Boys in Blue” midfielder Ben Speas found his first and only attempt at goal in the 78th minute. Eleven captain Matt Watson dribbled between NCFC defenders along the right goal post, sending a short pass to Speas in the 6-yard box. The Stow, Ohio native launched his shot at close-range, but Tambakis forced the ball back up the field. Indy looked as though they would coast to victory as the time ran down, but NCFC would get one final chance in the dying minutes of stoppage time.

NCFC was awarded a penalty kick in the 93rd minute after Rios was brought down just barely over the top line of Indy’s box by “Boys in Blue” defender Brad Rusin. Bekker stepped up to the spot and shot left, hoping to collect the equalizer and Carolina’s first USL point. However, Bekker’s hopes were dashed when Fon Williams read the midfielder’s kick and dove to keep the ball from finding the back of the net. Fon Williams quickly recovered and followed the loose ball out of play. It was just seconds later that the fourth official blew his whistle, signaling a win for the Circle City team.

It was a stellar night for the “Boys in Blue’s” defensive efforts. Defender Carlyle Mitchell’s ability to clear the ball reigned supreme after notching 10 clearances; defender Karl Ouimette “stole” the show with six interceptions; and defender Ayoze Garcia brought down the attack with four tackles to his name. In terms of moving the ball, no one surpassed Matern, who completed over four-fifths of his passes in during his 90 minute outing.

On the Road Again

 

Indy Eleven find themselves on a road trip back to the East coast for the second time in as many weeks after a 0-1 defeat at the hands of rivals FC Cincinnati in the home opener. The “Boys in Blue” will be attempting to upset Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie’s former club, North Carolina FC.  

Despite the record setting crowd and the dominance Indy Eleven showed on the pitch in Week Three, it was one of those games that just wasn’t meant to be. Forward Jack MnInerney struck the woodwork in the 17th minute with a header when he connected with defender Tyler Pasher’s cross. A quick counter by FC Cincinnati in the 26th minute resulted in a header that snuck past Eleven keeper Owain Fon William’s sinking Indy Eleven’s hopes of a victory in their first game at Lucas Oil Stadium. McInerney also earned a penalty in the 38th minute and stepped up to the spot to try and tuck it away. FC Cincinnati keeper Evan Newton guessed the right way and denied McInerney’s equalizer moments later.

North Carolina FC is also coming off a loss in Week Three play after falling 2-1 against Richmond Kickers, who Indy Eleven defeated 1-0 in Week Two action. North Carolina FC forward Daniel Rios opened the scoring in the 43rd minute providing a 1-0 cushion. North Carolina did everything possible to hold the lead, even making a goal-line clearance in the 64th minute, but a penalty call in the 77th minute was finished by Richmond’s Yudai Imura that leveled the game at one. Then in the 83rd minute, Kickers substitute Raul Gonzalez finished from six yards out which sealed the game at 2-1.

Indy Eleven will have to find a way to break North Carolina’s backline, which boasted an 83 percent tackle success rate and combined for 22 clearances. North Carolina also dominated the 50-50 duels winning 60 percent on the ground and 58 percent in the air.

“I feel like most time teams when you’re building – this is only our eighth week together – you have to make sure the structure of the team is solid and the possession is good, and I think we’ve already done that.” Rennie said. “But then you have to be a lot more dangerous in front of goal; you have to create more chances. I think you have to remember that they [FC Cincinnati] had two chances the entire game, and last game we hit the post, had a penalty and had chances around the box. We need to create better chances and I think we’ll do that.”

 

Indy Eleven Player to Watch: MF Zach Steinberger

 

Indy Eleven midfielder Zach Steinberger was one of several players who had a stellar game against FC Cincinnati last week. The attack-minded midfielder moved the ball around the pitch with ease. Steinberger completed 91 percent of his passes during the course of the match. Even more impressive is the fact the Butler graduate completed 90 percent of his passes in the attacking half of the field. Despite not hitting the target on any of his four shots, Steinberger was able to create two chances for his teammates.

This is Steinberger’s second stint with Indy Eleven. The first came in 2015 when he was loaned to “Indiana’s Team” from Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo, who drafted him 8th overall in the 2015 MLS Super Draft. The Long Beach, California native went on to spend two seasons with Jacksonville Armada of the NASL in 2016 and 2017, scoring 12 goals in 52 appearances. Look for the dynamic, attacking midfielder to create chances for both teammates and himself against North Carolina FC.

 

North Carolina FC Player to Watch: MF Kyle Bekker

 

Steinberger wasn’t the only midfielder who moved the ball with ease in Week Three play. Kyle Bekker of North Carolina FC moved the ball around just as impressively as Steinberger during NCFC’s outing at Richmond Kickers last Saturday. The midfield maestro finished the game with 92 percent passing accuracy on 38 passes. Bekker guided several passes to teammates in Richmond’s half of the field as well, finishing the game with 77 percent passing in the opposition half. Bekker’s ability to find an open teammate is uncanny.

His passing ability should come as no shock. Bekker was drafted third overall in the 2013 MLS Super Draft by Toronto FC after playing three years with Boston College, where he made 80 appearances and found the back of the net 17 times. Bekker went on to play in the MLS for three years totaling 58 appearances, but only scoring twice. In 2017, the Canadian International signed with San Francisco Deltas and won the 2017 NASL Soccer Bowl. On February 6, 2018, North Carolina FC signed Bekker.

 

Matchup to Mark: MF Matt Watson vs. MF Austin da Luz

 

The role of a box-to-box midfield is one of the most taxing positions in the game. Indy Eleven captain Matt Watson and North Carolina FC captain Austin da Luz are two talented, veteran box-to-box midfielders who will feature this Saturday in North Carolina. The two holding midfielders finished Week Three with similar stat lines.

Watson did exactly what a leader is expected do in Week Three for the “Boys in Blue”. He contributed to the offensive flow of the team completing 90 percent of the 38 passes he played, with a 93 percent completion rate in the offensive half. He also created two chances in the process. Not only did Watson contribute in the front third, he commanded the field in the middle third, and kept FC Cincinnati from countering and catching the Indy Eleven down numbers. Watson won half of his aerial 50-50 plays and accumulated two tackles, two interceptions, and two clearances in the defensive third.

Watson signed with Indy Eleven on February 8, during the offseason. The Englishman brings twelve years of professional experience to the team, including two years in the MLS with Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The veteran midfielder previously played under Coach Rennie with Carolina RailHawks, now North Carolina FC, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Look for Watson’s leadership to come through as he tries to lead the “Boys in Blue” to a second USL victory and another three points.

Da Luz is an integral part of  North Carolina FC’s midfield. The midfielder finished the game with 83 percent passing accuracy overall and 74 percent in Richmond’s half. He was also able to test Richmond’s keeper twice, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The former Wake Forest Demon Deacon also showcased his defensive abilities winning six-of-eight 50-50 challenges along with both aerial duels he partook in. Da Luz also shares MLS experience with Watson in his 10 year professional career. The California native spent time with New York Red Bulls and D.C. United. This is Da Luz’s seventh season total with North Carolina FC, making 128 appearances for the club totaling over 9,000 minutes. He’s also contributed 14 goals and eight assists during his time in the Tar Heel state. He will be attempting to lead North Carolina FC to their first victory in USL this year.

On the Road Again

 

Indy Eleven find themselves on a road trip back to the East coast for the second time in as many weeks after a 0-1 defeat at the hands of rivals FC Cincinnati in the home opener. The “Boys in Blue” will be attempting to upset Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie’s former club, North Carolina FC.  

Despite the record setting crowd and the dominance Indy Eleven showed on the pitch in Week Three, it was one of those games that just wasn’t meant to be. Forward Jack MnInerney struck the woodwork in the 17th minute with a header when he connected with defender Tyler Pasher’s cross. A quick counter by FC Cincinnati in the 26th minute resulted in a header that snuck past Eleven keeper Owain Fon William’s sinking Indy Eleven’s hopes of a victory in their first game at Lucas Oil Stadium. McInerney also earned a penalty in the 38th minute and stepped up to the spot to try and tuck it away. FC Cincinnati keeper Evan Newton guessed the right way and denied McInerney’s equalizer moments later.

North Carolina FC is also coming off a loss in Week Three play after falling 2-1 against Richmond Kickers, who Indy Eleven defeated 1-0 in Week Two action. North Carolina FC forward Daniel Rios opened the scoring in the 43rd minute providing a 1-0 cushion. North Carolina did everything possible to hold the lead, even making a goal-line clearance in the 64th minute, but a penalty call in the 77th minute was finished by Richmond’s Yudai Imura that leveled the game at one. Then in the 83rd minute, Kickers substitute Raul Gonzalez finished from six yards out which sealed the game at 2-1.

Indy Eleven will have to find a way to break North Carolina’s backline, which boasted an 83 percent tackle success rate and combined for 22 clearances. North Carolina also dominated the 50-50 duels winning 60 percent on the ground and 58 percent in the air.

“I feel like most time teams when you’re building – this is only our eighth week together – you have to make sure the structure of the team is solid and the possession is good, and I think we’ve already done that.” Rennie said. “But then you have to be a lot more dangerous in front of goal; you have to create more chances. I think you have to remember that they [FC Cincinnati] had two chances the entire game, and last game we hit the post, had a penalty and had chances around the box. We need to create better chances and I think we’ll do that.”

 

Indy Eleven Player to Watch: MF Zach Steinberger

 

Indy Eleven midfielder Zach Steinberger was one of several players who had a stellar game against FC Cincinnati last week. The attack-minded midfielder moved the ball around the pitch with ease. Steinberger completed 91 percent of his passes during the course of the match. Even more impressive is the fact the Butler graduate completed 90 percent of his passes in the attacking half of the field. Despite not hitting the target on any of his four shots, Steinberger was able to create two chances for his teammates.

This is Steinberger’s second stint with Indy Eleven. The first came in 2015 when he was loaned to “Indiana’s Team” from Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo, who drafted him 8th overall in the 2015 MLS Super Draft. The Long Beach, California native went on to spend two seasons with Jacksonville Armada of the NASL in 2016 and 2017, scoring 12 goals in 52 appearances. Look for the dynamic, attacking midfielder to create chances for both teammates and himself against North Carolina FC.

 

North Carolina FC Player to Watch: MF Kyle Bekker

 

Steinberger wasn’t the only midfielder who moved the ball with ease in Week Three play. Kyle Bekker of North Carolina FC moved the ball around just as impressively as Steinberger during NCFC’s outing at Richmond Kickers last Saturday. The midfield maestro finished the game with 92 percent passing accuracy on 38 passes. Bekker guided several passes to teammates in Richmond’s half of the field as well, finishing the game with 77 percent passing in the opposition half. Bekker’s ability to find an open teammate is uncanny.

His passing ability should come as no shock. Bekker was drafted third overall in the 2013 MLS Super Draft by Toronto FC after playing three years with Boston College, where he made 80 appearances and found the back of the net 17 times. Bekker went on to play in the MLS for three years totaling 58 appearances, but only scoring twice. In 2017, the Canadian International signed with San Francisco Deltas and won the 2017 NASL Soccer Bowl. On February 6, 2018, North Carolina FC signed Bekker.

 

Matchup to Mark: MF Matt Watson vs. MF Austin da Luz

 

The role of a box-to-box midfield is one of the most taxing positions in the game. Indy Eleven captain Matt Watson and North Carolina FC captain Austin da Luz are two talented, veteran box-to-box midfielders who will feature this Saturday in North Carolina. The two holding midfielders finished Week Three with similar stat lines.

Watson did exactly what a leader is expected do in Week Three for the “Boys in Blue”. He contributed to the offensive flow of the team completing 90 percent of the 38 passes he played, with a 93 percent completion rate in the offensive half. He also created two chances in the process. Not only did Watson contribute in the front third, he commanded the field in the middle third, and kept FC Cincinnati from countering and catching the Indy Eleven down numbers. Watson won half of his aerial 50-50 plays and accumulated two tackles, two interceptions, and two clearances in the defensive third.

Watson signed with Indy Eleven on February 8, during the offseason. The Englishman brings twelve years of professional experience to the team, including two years in the MLS with Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The veteran midfielder previously played under Coach Rennie with Carolina RailHawks, now North Carolina FC, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Look for Watson’s leadership to come through as he tries to lead the “Boys in Blue” to a second USL victory and another three points.

Da Luz is an integral part of  North Carolina FC’s midfield. The midfielder finished the game with 83 percent passing accuracy overall and 74 percent in Richmond’s half. He was also able to test Richmond’s keeper twice, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The former Wake Forest Demon Deacon also showcased his defensive abilities winning six-of-eight 50-50 challenges along with both aerial duels he partook in. The veteran also accounted for four tackles and three clearances in the defensive third.

Scorching Wing Play

Indy Eleven fell 0-1 against FC Cincinnati in their home opener. That didn’t stop Indy Eleven defender Tyler Pasher from having a game. Pasher terrorized FC Cincinnati’s outside back with tricky runs that left the defense feeling stranded alone on an island.

The speedy left-back’s most noticeable run of play came in the 17th minute after Pasher left three Cincinnati defenders behind him and played a back post, lofted cross that found the head of “Boy in Blue” Jack McInerney. In that instant, McInerney’s header struck off the right side of the woodwork nearly creating the first goal of the game. Pasher continued his runs throughout the entire game creating four chances, but was unable to create the goal that would bring the game level.

This is the Canadian International’s first season with Indy Eleven. Pasher spent time in Newcastle United’s youth academy, training and playing seven years in the Toon’s youth side. The young defender then found his way into the United States, spending time with United Soccer League sides Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Swope Park Rangers. Pasher signed with Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City in 2017, but was loaned to Swope Park Rangers for majority of the season. Last season, Pasher started 25 of 32 matches and helped SPR to a top four finish. Watch out for his mesmerizing wing play against North Carolina FC on Saturday.

“Indiana’s Team’s” first ever USL Era game in Lucas Oil stadium drew a franchise record-breaking crowd of 17,535 people against FC Cincinnati. Indy Eleven shattered the previous attendance record of 11,048 set against the North Carolina Railhawks, who are now North Carolina FC, on April 12, 2014. The attendance for this matchup outsold MLS sides Houston, Chicago, Colorado, and Columbus. Indy Eleven are now chasing the all-time attendance record held by cross-state rivals FC Cincinnati at 21,199, a goal that seems not so far away after Saturday’s home opener. 

Despite the loss, the noise of the Brickyard Battalion echoed throughout the stadium for a full 90 minutes, making sure the traveling team and fans felt their presence. Just after kickoff, the Brickyard Battalion raised an intimidating tifo featuring “Stranger Things” star, Millie Bobby Brown, dawning the phrase, “You better run”. The young actor caught notice of the Brickyard Battalion’s efforts and showed her appreciation on twitter.

““It was fantastic,” Rennie said. “The crowd, the stadium, the atmosphere; it was absolutely perfect. I thought it was one of those games, honestly, another night we would’ve won that game. We had chances, we hit the post, and we had a penalty. Really, I think Cincinnati only had two chances and they took one of them.”

 The “Boys in Blue” tried to run the show in the opening minutes of the match. Indy Eleven midfielder Matthew Watson hammered a shot from outside Cincinnati’s box in the 4th minute. The shot had power, but the attempt fell wide of the post for a goal kick.

FC Cincinnati began asking questions moments later from the restarted play. In the 6th minute, Ledesma came up with his first of many challenges for Indy Eleven goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams. Though the chance looked clear from the newly signed forward, his attempt found its way over the crossbar for Indy to restart play. Ledesma would get another attempt in the 9th minute from a free kick outside of Indy’s 18-yard box. The shot headed towards the center of the home side’s goal, but Fon Williams forced the ball from play once again.

Indy’s second chance, and second best chance, of the evening came in the 17th minute. Indy Eleven defender Tyler Pasher ran the ball to the corner flag left of Cincinnati’s goal. Pasher lofted the ball towards the top-center of the visitor’s 6-yard box where Eleven forward Jack McInerney headed the ball off the right goal post. The free ball bounced off “Boys in Blue” midfielder Zach Steinberger as he charged in the 6-yard box, but the play died after FCC swept the ball out of bounds.

FC Cincinnati found their game winning goal in the 26th minute after a series of deflections. Ledesma fired a shot from the center of Indy’s 18-yard box after receiving a right-in cross, but Fon Williams made the save at extension. The ball fell out to the left of Fon Williams following his save when Ledesma collected and crossed in to striking partner Emery Welshman. With a hard hit, Welshman sent the ball past Fon Williams and wheeled away in celebration. “Boys in Blue” Watson looked to level two minutes later with an unassisted run into Cincinnati’s box, but FCC goaltender Evan Newton saved the shot with a dive to the left.

Indy Eleven saw the needle tip in its favor once again after being awarded a penalty kick in the 38th minute following McInerney being brought down in ‘Cincy’s’ box. McInerney stepped up to the spot and sent the ball to the upper left, but Newton was prepared and forced the attempted to the right. Still looking to register a goal, Eleven midfielder Ben Speas brought down Newton’s deflection, only for it to be sent back out by the traveling goalkeeper.

Indy continued to look for an equalizer in the early minutes of the second half. In the 51st minute, McInerney laid a cross to the top of Cincinnati’s box to Eleven forward Eugene Starikov. The “New in Blue” hard-hitter attempted his shot, but the ball ended high and out of bounds.

The “Boys in Blue” nearly found a goal to level the score in the final minutes of regular time. Indy forward Soony Saad took a shot nearly 15-yards out from Cincinnati’s posts in the 82nd minute. The shot looked promising for on-looking fans before Cincinnati’s Newton barely tipped the shot over the crossbar.

Tonight’s loss goes on record as the first in Indy Eleven’s USL account, bringing them to 1W-1L-0D. Looking past dropped points at home, Indy Eleven’s defense performance illuminated the stats sheet with the backline winning over 55 percent of their duels. Additionally, Pasher impact was felt throughout the 90 minutes, creating four chances and completing almost 82 percent of his passes.

Indy Eleven hit the road next week to take on former NASL rivals North Carolina FC and return home on April 14th to take on fellow league newcomers, Nashville SC.

Indy Eleven saw the needle tip in its favor once again after being awarded a penalty kick in the 38th minute following McInerney being brought down in ‘Cincy’s’ box. McInerney stepped up to the spot and sent the ball to the upper left, but Newton was prepared and forced the attempted to the right. Still looking to register a goal, Eleven midfielder Ben Speas brought down Newton’s deflection, only for it to be sent back out by the traveling goalkeeper.

Indy continued to look for an equalizer in the early minutes of the second half. In the 51st minute, McInerney laid a cross to the top of Cincinnati’s box to Eleven forward Eugene Starikov. The “New in Blue” hard-hitter attempted his shot, but the ball ended high and out of bounds.

The “Boys in Blue” nearly found a goal to level the score in the final minutes of regular time. Indy forward Soony Saad took a shot nearly 15-yards out from Cincinnati’s posts in the 82nd minute. The shot looked promising for on-looking fans before Cincinnati’s Newton barely tipped the shot over the crossbar.

Tonight’s loss goes on record as the first in Indy Eleven’s USL account, bringing them to 1W-1L-0D. Looking past dropped points at home, Indy Eleven’s defense performance illuminated the stats sheet with the backline winning over 55 percent of their duels. Additionally, Pasher impact was felt throughout the 90 minutes, creating four chances and completing almost 82 percent of his passes.

Indy Eleven hit the road next week to take on former NASL rivals North Carolina FC and return home on April 14th to take on fellow league newcomers, Nashville SC.

That’s because WISH-TV, the CW affiliate, announced that Indy Eleven fans can once again watch the “Boys in Blue” on WISH-TV and MyINDY-TV 23 (WNDY) in 2018. “Indiana’s Team” and Central Indiana’s CW and My Network affiliates have finalized their partnership for the fifth straight season.

“The Indy Eleven faithful have grown used to the consistent, high-quality coverage that WISH-TV and MyINDY-TV 23 has provided for the last four seasons” said Larry Linde, Indy Eleven’s Director of Corporate Partnerships & Broadcasting. “This partnership has produced some of the best broadcasts in U.S. Soccer, as well as quality exposure for our partners. We are looking forward to another season of all-star coverage from the WISH-TV and MyINDY-TV 23 team.”

MyINDY-TV 23 will air 17 of the games, starting Saturday, March 31, when the Indy Eleven host the 2018 home opener against FC Cincinnati at 7:00 p.m. in Lucas Oil Stadium. WISH-TV will broadcast three match-ups, beginning July 7, when the Indy Eleven battle the Charlotte Independence.

Indy Eleven Professional Soccer announces the signing of University of Indianapolis superstar Braden Tamosaitis to a one-day contract.

6,758 minutes. That’s how many regular season minutes Brad Ring has appeared on the pitch donning Indy Eleven’s crest over his heart. Ring, affectionately nicknamed “Legend” by the Brickyard Battalion (BYB), first joined Indy Eleven’s roster back in January 2014. Although joining Indy Eleven was new territory for him, the move was Ring’s return to the Hoosier state after his successful stint with Indiana University Men’s Soccer team from 2005-2008.

Back in 2014, “Indiana’s Team” was still growing—Indy Eleven had officially come into existence a year prior under the moniker “Indy Pro Soccer”; only a handful of players had been signed and most glaringly, the club hadn’t played a game. It was truly a fresh start for Ring, a seasoned veteran who had played for Major League Soccer giants Portland Timbers and San Jose Earthquakes in seasons prior. Some of the more dedicated fans would’ve known the Rockford, Illinois native from his MLS and college career, but for the rest, his name didn’t “ring” a bell.

Over the last five seasons, Ring has seen the Circle City club evolve: numerous teammates come and go; three head coaches, two assistant coaches; collecting the club’s first silverware in 2016 and suffering championship-falling heartbreak later that season. Through all the ebbs and flows, Ring remained the one constant. This consistency manifested itself in Ring’s role with the club slowly molding him into the leader that he is today.  

“I have been fortunate to have so many amazing teammates over the last 4 years here in Indy,” said Ring. “Although it’s a bit sad that so many guys have gone different directions with their careers, it’s an honor to be the last remaining original member of the 2014 squad. My role has changed each year. Some years I have been more vocal and other years I have lead quietly by example. I have worn the armband a few times which is always an honor so it was special to be named vice captain this year to Matt Watson as team captain.”

A “leader” can be defined as “the person who leads or commands a group or organization”. Leadership is synonymous with experience, and experience is something Ring has a wealth of given the amount of times he’s dressed in his club’s colors. After coming on as a substitute in last Saturday’s 1-0 win against the Richmond Kickers, the midfielder inched closer to making his 100th appearance for Indy. Sitting at 95 caps [appearances] for his club, Ring is just games away from becoming the second player to register 100 appearances in Indy Eleven’s history, the first being former teammate and Indy original Don Smart.

According to Ring, there isn’t any magic to being selected. However, Ring leads by example by demonstrating proper fitness and personal upkeep to make himself eligible for play time each week.

“As you get older all the little things add up,” Ring explained. “I try to take care of my body as best as I can. Eating healthy with the help from King Cal meals, recovering properly, staying hydrated, etc., so that I can train and play to the best of my ability every time I step on the field.” 

Off the pitch, Ring reprises his leadership role by becoming a role model in his community.  In 2016, he founded “Ring’s Reading Program”, a reading program geared towards helping elementary students improve their literary skills. The program initially debuted in schools within the Carmel, Indiana area, but quickly spread to education systems throughout the city. Inspired by numerous figures in his youth, Ring strives to grow his reading program as a way to give back to the community that has welcomed him with open arms.

“I’m very proud to have started ‘Ring’s Reading Program’ aimed at helping elementary school kids improve their reading, nutrition and living an active lifestyle,” Ring stated. “The idea transpired due to my desire to give back to the community. A lot of people inspired me when I was young so I feel the calling to do the same for today’s youth. We have received a lot of positive feedback from schools so the plan is to continue to visit schools to expand the impact of my program.”

It’s the ever-growing acts of selflessness in his community and the dedication to his teammates on the pitch that has drawn the eyes of so many supporters. As the saying goes, “Your small support could accomplish a big dream.” In the case for Brad Ring, the support he’s received from the BYB over the years has been anything but small. From 2014 to today, Ring has been a mainstay in both Indy’s lineup and the in the hearts of the club’s fans. Ring has found himself the subject of several fan-favorite moments, from innumerable stellar performances to the famous celebratory “beer chug” after clinching the 2016 Spring North American Soccer League Championship.

Indianapolis’ obsession with Ring became apparent earlier this year when the hashtag #BringBradBack made its round on social media just days before the championed midfielder re-signed with Indy Eleven. It’s these moments that have cemented Ring into the fabric of supporter culture, and the focus of their cheers and chants game after game.

“I have an enormous amount of respect for our fan base and specifically the BYB,” Ring said. “They welcomed me and my family from day one helping to make Indy feel quickly like home. They give everything they have for 90+ mins always pushing us to fight ‘til the end. I appreciate the love and support they have given me over the years. I hope they know how much it means to me, my family and the entire organization.”

While the club’s fan base has remained a constant, Indy Eleven has seen some wholesales changes in the last four years. It’s not every day a player finds themselves playing for a new head coach in a brand new league, but still playing for the same team they’ve been with for years. “The coaching staff has really developed a positive and supporting culture in their short time with the club,” Ring said. “I have no personal goals but just to enjoy the season and be the best teammate possible. Every team has a goal to make the playoffs and we are no exception. We have high hopes for the year even greater than that. We know the road won’t be easy but if we work hard and stick together, we have the talent and resources to do big things.” 

Time wears on. Buildings rise and fall. Players come and go. Eventually, there will be a time in which Ring will say “farewell” to Indy Eleven and his supporters.
