Indy Eleven’s fitness and style of play have begun to take shape as the team enters into its third preseason friendly this Saturday. Coming up, the Eleven will take on Notre Dame Men’s Soccer at Butler University for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.

Last time out, the “Boys in Blue” walked away victorious in a 2-0 shutout against 2x-USL Playoff contenders Swope Park Rangers. Indy Eleven forward Eugene Starikov nabbed the only two goals of the match in the opening and closing minutes of the first half. In the second half, Indy managed to hold the Rangers primarily in the midfield following wholesale changes to the home side’s lineup in the 60th minute. The Eleven now hold a 1W-0D-1L preseason record after winning their last match and falling 1-2 in the club’s first preseason friendly against FC Cincinnati.

This Saturday marks the first time Indy Eleven has faced off against Notre Dame’s “Fighting Irish” in the club’s five year history. In another series of firsts, Saturday also marks the first time Notre Dame’s squad has taken to the pitch after finishing its 2017 in a 0-1 loss to the University of Wisconsin’s Men’s Soccer team in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2017, the six-time Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Champions held a 11W-2D-7L record and scored 30 goals across all competitions, scoring an average of 1.5 goals per game. The collegiate team also made it to the ACC Semifinal before bowing out in a 1-2 loss to the University of Virginia.

Who to Watch, Indy Eleven edition: FW Eugene Starikov

“New in Blue” forward Eugene Starikov shone up front during the last preseason outing after scoring both goals in the 2-0 win over Swope Park Rangers. In the 5th minute, Indy XI was awarded a penalty after Indy striker Soony Saad was brought down deep in SPR’s box. After the match official pointed to the spot, Starikov stepped up with a slow, staggered approach, sending the Rangers’ keeper to the right and the ball into the lower left corner of the net. Starikov’s game-winning goal came in the dying minutes of the first half after several close calls from his teammates. In the 44th minute, Starikov netted his second goal when he headed down a free kick from Eleven defender Kevin Venegas.

In 2017, Starikov played over 1,300 minutes in 25 regular season appearances for his former club, New York Cosmos. In that time, Starikov scored 4 goals and a single assist for the NASL giants. Additionally, the Ukrainian forward tallied two goals and two assist in three matches during the Cosmos’ Dominican Republic preseason tour.

Match-up to Mark: DF Brad Rusin vs. DF Felicien Dumas 

It’ll be a battle of defenders on Saturday when Indy Eleven newcomer Brad Rusin goes head-to-head with Notre Dame defender Felicien Dumas.

Brad Rusin has been a key component in Indy’s backline in the last two friendlies. In both outings, Rusin has demonstrated his ability to take on attacking players one-on-one, as well as quickly moving the ball up the pitch on the counter. Before the move to Indy, Rusin showed his strong defensive abilities early in NASL’s Miami FC’s 2016 campaign. In seven appearances, Rusin tallied 15 clearances, 2 blocks, 12 interceptions, won 12 duels and tallied a single goal before his season ended early due to injury. Rusin didn’t participate in Miami’s 2017 season due to the injury he sustained in 2016.

2017 ACC All-Academic Team defender Felicien Dumas will take to the pitch this Saturday in his first appearance as a senior for the “Fighting Irish”. During his last campaign, Dumas tallied the team’s third most goals with three to his name. Additionally, Dumas collect a team-high 8 assist in 20 appearances. Prior to joining Notre Dame’s roster, Dumas enjoyed a successful youth career during his time at the United World College of South East Asia, which included: trialed with Premier League’s Newcastle United; offered professional contracts by Singapore S-League teams; and won several team and personal titles in the South East Asia Student Activity Conference (SEASAC) and the Athletic Conference of Singapore International Schools (ACSIS).

Indy Eleven forward Eugene Starikov nets two goals to seal Indy’s first preseason victory in a 2-0 shutout over Western Conference powerhouse Swope Park Rangers.

The “Boys in Blue” took charge of the match in the opening minutes after Starikov netted a penalty in the 5th minute of the match. Indy Eleven forward Soony Saad charged into the Rangers’ box mostly uncontested until being brought down moments before firing off a shot, leading the official to point to the spot. Thereafter, Starikov came up to the ball with a slow, staggered approach, to slot the ball into the lower left corner of the goal and bring the lead to 1-nil.

Swope Park Rangers attempted to respond nearly six minutes later. In the 11th minute, SPR went on the offensive, charging into the top of Indy’s box. The attack was short lived as Indy Eleven defender Brad Rusin was quick to deflect and neutralize SPR’s offensive efforts.

Moments later, a shot from McInerney came close to widening Indy’s gap. In the 14th minute, McInerney found himself feet in front of SPR’s goal. Sadly, SPR’s goaltender quickly scrambled to deflect McInerney’s strike out of play, keeping the “Boys in Blue” up by a single goal.  Another attempt came in the 30th minute when Indy Eleven Kevin Venegas found himself alone in the top-right of SPR’s 18-yard box. Venegas attempted to send the ball to the back of the net, but the lack of power allowed the Rangers’ keeper to calmly collect and restart play.

After creating several chances, Indy finally tallied their second goal in the dying moments of the first half. In the 44th minute, Starikov was on the receiving end of a cross directly in front of SPR’s box. The headed ball ultimately found its way to the top left corner of the goal, securing Starikov’s brace and the winning goal for the evening.

Onto the 60th minute, Indy Eleven made wholesale changes to its lineup in fielding 11 pairs of fresh legs. After the change, the game became contained to the midfield as the new players worked to find their pace.

The highlight in the second half for the “Boys in Blue” came in the 75th minute when forward Justin Braun returned to the pitch for the first time since his season ending injury late in 2017.  Though he was only fielded for 15 minutes, Braun’s return was an important milestone in his rehabilitation efforts.

In the final moments of the match, “Boys in Blue” defender Reiner Ferreira picked up the one and only yellow card of the match after a hard challenge on an SPR defender in the visitor’s half. 

90 minutes came to pass and Indy claimed their first win and clean sheet of the 2018 preseason. The performance was a solid training exercise according to Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie. “We played well,” Rennie said. “We created a lot of chances and defended in a solid way. I was happy that we looked organized and dominated a lot of the game.”

Next up, Indy Eleven returns to action as they take on Notre Dame Men’s Soccer team at Butler University this Saturday, March 3rd, at 2:30 p.m.

Back at it again

After 13 days of practice and a preseason match under their belt, the “Boys in Blue” will take to the pitch for the second time in the offseason to welcome back Western Conference visitors Swope Park Rangers. Indy Eleven faced the Rangers during last year’s preseason in a contest that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Last time out, Indy Eleven fell 1-2 to the Clubs newest regional rivals FC Cincinnati. Despite several chances from both sides, the match remained even until the 50th minute when forward Emmanuel Ledesma opened the scoring for FC Cincinnati with a penalty. Quick to answer, Indy won a penalty of its own in the 64th minute. “New in Blue” forward Soony Saad slotted the ball in the back of the net, leveling the score 1-1. Unfortunately, Cincinnati was quick to respond just three minutes later. In the 67th minute, FCC’s Daniel Haber headed home the winning goal from a cross into Indy’s box from teammate Russell Cicerone.

Despite the loss, Indy Eleven’s head coach Martine Rennie saw the “L” in a positive light. “I think this is a game that everyone can be happy with,” Rennie said. “I was very pleased that we got the fitness and got the work. The players responded well to the messages we’ve been giving them. I’m very happy with the effort and the work we put in.”

Swope Park Rangers arrive in Indy with three preseason matches to their names; 2-0 victory over Rockhurst University, 2-2 draw against Western Conference frenemies Tulsa Roughnecks FC and a 1-1 draw to Creighton University. In 2017, SPR finished the season with a Top Four finish in the Western Conference with an overall record of 17W-7D-8L and scoring the USL’s 5th most goals with 57. Moreover, the Rangers showcased strong defensive prowess after they secured the USL’s fourth most clean sheets with 13 matches.

Looking ahead to Wednesday’s preseason feature, Coach Rennie seeks to continue improving fitness and finding minutes, opposed to winning results. “At this point, we’re still focused on getting our players fit, getting stronger and getting them to understand the way we want them to play,” Rennie said. “Obviously we want to play well and enjoy the game, but most importantly we want to get fit and ready for the season.”

 

Who to Watch, Indy Eleven edition: DF Tyler Pasher

 All eyes fall on one of Indy’s newest additions to the squad, defender Tyler Pasher. The Canadian national joins Indy Eleven after spending the last two seasons with Wednesday’s visiting side. In 2017, Pasher signed for Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City, SPR’s Division I affiliate, after rising through the ranks in 2016 with the Rangers and in 2015 with USL’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

Last season, Pasher flaunted his defensive and offensive abilities, accumulating 39 clearances, 41 interceptions and tallying three assists in 27 appearances.

 

Match-up to Mark: GK Owain Fon Williams vs. SPR attack

Wales National Team goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams recently joined Indy Eleven on loan for the 2018 season in the recent string of wholesale roster changes. Prior to joining the “Boys in Blue” Williams spent the majority of his career with a number clubs across the United Kingdom, with the most recent being Scottish side Inverness Caledonia Thistle FC. Over the course of his career, Williams has found himself to be the number one choice between the posts, with well more than a handful of outstanding performances that saw him linked up with several Premier League sides over the years. In addition to game-winning performances, Williams’ move stateside also brings along a wealth of leadership and experience. 

Although much of Swope Park Rangers’ roster is filled with new faces, the Western Conference side will look to keep the same aggression they displayed last season. In 2017, Swope Park Rangers ended their season in 4th place in USL Western Conference with a 17W-7D-8L regular season record. Moreover, SPR scored the USL’s 5th most goals with 57, scoring a goal almost every 58 minutes during regular season play. While some of SPR’s key players in those goals haven’t returned to the lineup, the Sporting Kansas City affiliates have managed the same high-press style of play in preseason thus. As of now, SPR has a 1W-2D-0L record in preseason, tallying five goals in 3 matches.

In 2017, Pasher signed for Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City, SPR’s Division I affiliate, after rising through the ranks in 2016 with the Rangers and in 2015 with USL’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

Last season, Pasher flaunted his defensive and offensive abilities, accumulating 39 clearances, 41 interceptions and tallying three assists in 27 appearances.

 

Match-up to Mark: GK Owain Fon Williams vs. SPR attack

Wales National Team goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams recently joined Indy Eleven on loan for the 2018 season in the recent string of wholesale roster changes. Prior to joining the “Boys in Blue” Williams spent the majority of his career with a number clubs across the United Kingdom, with the most recent being Scottish side Inverness Caledonia Thistle FC. Over the course of his career, Williams has found himself to be the number one choice between the posts, with well more than a handful of outstanding performances that saw him linked up with several Premier League sides over the years. In addition to game-winning performances, Williams’ move stateside also brings along a wealth of leadership and experience. 

Although much of Swope Park Rangers’ roster is filled with new faces, the Western Conference side will look to keep the same aggression they displayed last season. In 2017, Swope Park Rangers ended their season in 4th place in USL Western Conference with a 17W-7D-8L regular season record. Moreover, SPR scored the USL’s 5th most goals with 57, scoring a goal almost every 58 minutes during regular season play. While some of SPR’s key players in those goals haven’t returned to the lineup, the Sporting Kansas City affiliates have managed the same high-press style of play in preseason thus. As of now, SPR has a 1W-2D-0L record in preseason, tallying five goals in 3 matches.

Just four minutes later, defender Tyler Pasher broke away up the left side of the pitch and crossed towards the center of Cincinnati’s box. The cross was met by an Indy trialist who nearly put the XI in an early lead, but was deflected by Cincinnati’s keeper.

After battling for possession for much of the first period, Indy began to find its legs in its attack. In the 20th minute, Indy Eleven forward Eugene Starikov fought and retained possession as he stormed through the midfield. Once in the box, Starikov attempted to send one to the back of the next, but ultimately ended wide. Shortly after in the 26th minute, Indy Eleven defender Kevin Venegas made an end-to-end break up the right side of the pitch. With a quick through pass, Venegas’ ball found the feet of a trialist who nearly sent the ball to the back of the net once again, but Cincinnati’s keeper was quick to catch the attempt.

Both sides continued to fight for possession late into the second period before FC Cincinnati found the first goal of the match. In the 49th minute, Cincinnati was awarded a penalty after an Indy Eleven trialist clipped the heel of FCC’s Forrest Lasso within the home side’s box. FCC newcomer Emmanuel Ledesma slotted the penalty home, giving the visitors the lead.

The visitor’s lead was short lived when the “Boys in Blue” earned a penalty of their own in the 64th minute. Former Indy Eleven midfielder and one of FCC’s newest signings Blake Smith brought down Indy Eleven's newest signing Soony Saad in their penalty area, leading the match official to point to the spot. Saad stepped up to answer the call and sent the ball behind FCC’s Spencer Richey to level the score, 1-1.

FC Cincinnati found the lead once more moments later. In the 65th minute, FCC’s Daniel Haber headed in the leading goal after meeting a cross from teammate Matthew Bahner.

Despite the continued effort to create chances, Indy Eleven ultimately fell short and ended the day with an “L”. Although the home side didn’t come out on top, Indy Eleven head coach Martine Rennie found plenty of positive takeaways. “I think this is a game that everyone can be happy with,” Rennie said. “I was very pleased that we got the fitness and got the work. The players responded well to the messages we’ve been giving them. I’m very happy with the effort and the work we put in.”

Indy entered the match just 10 days after they began preseason training. While most might take a loss hard, this was largely a learning opportunity for Coach Rennie and his squad. “I was happy with the chances we created and the saves we made,” Rennie said. “At this point, we’re just getting started.”

The “Boys in Blue” will take to the pitch again next Wednesday, February 28th, as they welcome USL side Swope Park Rangers to the next preseason home match.

Indy Eleven Professional Soccer announces the signing of forward Soony Saad from Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City to its 2018 roster pending league and federation approval.

“Soony is a dynamic attacking player who has a wealth of experience in MLS play as well as with the Lebanese National Team,” Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie said. “He’s a significant, high-caliber signing for our club that brings top tier success on the pitch, but is still young and has a bright career ahead of him.”

In 2011, Saad signed his first professional contract with MLS’ Sporting Kansas City after a successful collegiate career at University of Michigan. During his first four years with SKC, Saad scored eight goals in 58 appearances. Additionally, Saad collected a MLS Cup in 2013, as well as Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup honors in 2012.

In 2016, Saad signed for Thai League 1 side Police Tero FC, where he scored nine goals in 28 appearances. Saad made his return to SKC last season, making a total of 12 appearances and tallying a single assist.

Outside of club play, Saad has represented the United States Under-17, Under-20 Men’s National Team and well as the Lebanese Senior Men’s National Team on several occasions.

“Jack is a prominent goal scorer who has scored many goals in his career so far,” Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie said. “He’s very hungry to keep scoring and we’re very lucky to have him join our team.”

McInerney signed his first professional contract after being drafted seventh overall in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft by Philadelphia Union from the U.S. Men’s National Team Under-17 Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida. Other notable members that shared residency with McInerney in the U.S. Soccer program include Indianapolis-native Perry Kitchen and former Indy Eleven player Victor Pineda.

Since 2010, McInerney has scored 43 goals in 175 appearances during stints with MLS clubs Philadelphia Union, Montreal Impact, Columbus Crew SC, Portland Timbers and LA Galaxy.  By late 2015, McInerney ranked second in MLS history in scoring the most goals by the age of 23 with 36 goals to his name. “I’m very excited to work with Carlyle, again,” Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie said. “He was the second best in the K-League when I coached him in Korea. He’ll be an excellent defender that will bring a great goal threat on offensive set plays.”

“Nathan Lewis is a fast, dangerous winger, who is rated as one of the most exciting prospects in Trinidad & Tobago at the moment,” Coach Rennie said. “We're very happy that he has chosen to join Indy Eleven.”

30-year-old Mitchell returns to a Coach Rennie’s squad after previously lining up under the Scotsman during stints with Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps and Korean second division side Seoul E-Land. Additionally, Mitchell has played for former North American Soccer League’s FC Edmonton on loan. Mitchell started his senior career playing for Trinidad & Tobago Pro League team Joe Public FC. Prior to joining the “Boys in Blue”, Mitchell spent a short spell with Trinidad & Tobago club Central FC. Furthermore, Mitchell has made 35 appearances for the Trinidad & Tobago National Team, scoring three goals in all featured competitions.

Lewis has made several call-ups to the senior Trinidad & Tobago National Team, including roster appearances in 2018 World Cup qualifying matches against Panama, Grenada, United States and Costa Rica. “Amass is an exciting, very talented attacking midfielder,” Indy Eleven head coach Martin Rennie said. “He brings with him creativity and the ability to score goals.”

Amankona collected several collegiate honors at the University of Dayton which include being named the 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference MVP and Midfielder and a MAC Hermann National Player of the Year semifinalist the same year. From there, Amankona went on to make 14 appearances for USL PDL side Charlotte Eagles, where he scored three goals and three assists. In 2016, Amankona was the 46th overall pick in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft by Real Salt Lake, but played for the club’s USL affiliate squad, Real Monarchs, scoring one goal in 26 appearances. Last season, Amankona returned to the USL PDL in the Dayton Dutch Lions lineup.
