Loudoun United head south to play their sixth match of the 2021 United Soccer League (USL) against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Friday, June 11 with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The Red-and-White will look to bounce back from two close losses in a row as they face off with a Tampa Bay Rowdies team that has won five of their last six matches and currently has the most points in the entire league.
In their last match, Loudoun United FC lost 1-0 to the Charleston Battery despite keeping 62% of the possession in the match and outshooting Charleston 12-9. Loudoun kept constant pressure on their opponent’s goal in the first half and put together multiple good chances to score, including in the third minute when Jacob Greene’s shot from the left side of the box was narrowly saved by the goalkeeper. In the 40th minute, Robert Dambrot found space in the box after the ball fell to him from a corner kick, but his left-footed shot was saved as well. The two sides went into halftime with a scoreless draw.
The two teams remained scoreless for the better part of the second half before the 73rd minute when Burke Fahling converted from in close to give Charleston the lead. Keegan Meyer, in his debut match for the club, made a diving stop to prevent a breakaway goal in the 84th minute and keep Loudoun United at a one-goal deficit. The Red-and-White nearly found an equalizer in the 90thminute when Timmy Mehl’s header off a corner kick flew just over the crossbar.
This will be just the third all-time meeting between the two clubs. Their first meeting came on March 30, 2019 when the two teams played to a scoreless draw and their other match came on October 4, 2019 when Loudoun United won 2-0 at Segra Field. Both teams play in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division and will play each other a total of four times during the 2021 USL Championship Regular Season.
The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ with coverage starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.
