
Loudoun United FC took advantage of an early red card to secure a 2-1 road win against New York Red Bulls II. It was the Red-and-White’s first win of the 2020 USL Championship season.
Loudoun United FC started the match positively, as they claimed a bulk of the early possession and created a couple of goalscoring opportunities in the opening minutes. In the 15th minute, Red Bulls II goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley was sent off after being forced into handling the ball outside of the box to prevent a breakaway goal. The red card proved to be a pivotal point in the match with LUFC playing a man-up for the remaining 80 minutes.
Loudoun United capitalized on the man advantage in stoppage time of the first half when Kairou Amoustapha, recording his first assist for the club, found Ted Ku-Dipietro who created a yard for himself inside the box and his well-placed shot found the bottom left corner to give LUFC the 1-0 lead. Amoustapha, in his second game since arriving at the club, was a bright spot throughout the match and was dangerous in the final third.
Loudoun United doubled their lead 20 minutes later when Elvis Amoh converted a penalty kick in the 65th minute after a Red Bulls II handball in the box. It was Amoh’s third goal in three consecutive games.
Despite playing a man down, Red Bulls II continued to push forward and scored a 78th minute goal courtesy of Preston Kilwien. Head Coach Ryan Martin's second-half substitutes, Josh Fawole, Jeremy Garay, Brandon Williamson, Massimo Ferrin and Peabo Doue provided crucial energy to help LUFC hold on to the lead and earn their first win in 2020.
