
Loudoun United FC are set to play against Rio Grande Valley FC for their 20thmatch of the 2021 United Soccer League (USL) Championship regular season on Saturday, September 4 with kickoff scheduled for 8:30 PM ET. Loudoun will look to pick up three points on the road when they face the RGV Toros for the first time in club history.
In their last match, Loudoun United lost 2-0 to the Tampa Bay Rowdies on August 23. Loudoun outshot Tampa Bay 16-13 but were unable to find the back of the net and lost to a tough Rowdies team at home. Jacob Greene had the first close chance of the match in 18thminute, but his attempt from the right side of the box was saved at the near post. Tampa Bay scored in the 23rdminute when Lewis Hilton finished into the bottom left corner from the middle of the penalty area. Tampa Bay doubled its lead in the third minute of added time to make the score 2-0 going into halftime.
Timmy Mehl nearly cut the lead in half in the 53rdminute when he got a good look at a shot, but his effort was saved. Darluis Paz took a good strike from outside the box in the 63rdminute but the goalkeeper was once again there to make an acrobatic save. Loudoun United pushed forward all second half and were able to keep 57% of the possession thanks to strong play in the midfield. In the end, the Red-and-White were unable to find a goal to get them back into the match and lost 2-0.
Rio Grande Valley FC play in the Western Conference Mountain Division in the USL Championship and currently sit in third place in that division with 29 points accumulated on the season so far. This will be the only time that the two teams play this year.
