The Somos Unidos Foundation and the players of New Mexico United are pleased to announce the creation of the “Shirts Off Our Backs” Player Project. Every 2020 New Mexico United player has made the decision to sacrifice their 2020 match shirt. These jerseys will be placed up for raffle, with all proceeds benefiting the Community Desk Project, which provides kid-sized desks for New Mexican children who are learning at home, and the Somos Unidos Foundation, which fights inequity in New Mexico through the game of soccer.

New Mexico United Family,
Throughout this strange 2020 season, we have prided ourselves on the ability to provide a weekly refuge for thousands of New Mexicans that we call family. For 90 minutes we play the game that has united our great state in ways never experienced before. Unfortunately, we know that 90 minutes of mental escape is not enough. We also see the struggle, the daily realities, and the pain that has affected everyone in our community. We must do more. We, the players of New Mexico United, are committed to making New Mexico better every single day.
We see businesses, nonprofits, and individuals stepping up to help one another this year, and we want to join forces to enhance that impact. Each member on our roster is contributing one of the most prized memories from this season, a game worn jersey. As much as we treasure the shirt that represents the memories and battles of a season, that pales in comparison to the impact they will have as they help us provide support to those impacted most: The children of New Mexico.
This month, the very jerseys that we have bled and sweat in, that we go to war in, that we represent New Mexico in – will find new life and greater purpose. With your support, our kits become fuel for New Mexico’s future, as we raffle them off to raise funds for The Community Desk Project and the Somos Unidos Foundation’s work supporting kids in our community.
Inequity – as much as we may hate it – is often part of being a child in New Mexico. The Community Desk Project and the Somos Unidos Foundation aim to fight that inequity by providing every child with a workspace to call their own. Giving a child their very own desk gives them a place to learn, to do homework, and a way to know that they have a community supporting them, along with their dreams and aspirations. As desks are practically sold out in stores nationwide – and few are specifically designed for children – David Gunter and an amazing team of volunteers with the Community Desk Project are churning out desks and working through a long waiting list of kids who are in need.
We are writing to you today to ask for your support in advancing the impact of this project and our work for New Mexico children and families. This summer Our Somos Unidos Foundation worked with partners to provide distance learning supplies, PPE and solar lanterns to the Navajo Nation — and even after our desk project, there will be more to do in sharing the spirit of Art, Sport and Unity statewide.
