
CARY, N.C. – Tonight the NCAA Men’s College Cup will kick off in Hoover, AL and the Carolina RailHawks U-23’s will be well represented. UNC’s Billy Schuler, Enzo Martinez, Glen Long, and Drew McKinney and UNC-Charlotte’s TJ Beaulieu were all members of the RailHawks U-23’s that won the USASA U-23 National Cup this past summer. The College Cup will open with UNC-Charlotte (16-4-3) facing off against No. 2 seed Creighton University (21-2-0) at 6:00 p.m. Following the match the No. 1 seed UNC Tar Heels (20-2-2) will take on No. 13 seed UCLA (18-4-1). The winners of the Semifinal matches will compete for the NCAA Division I National Championship on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. All matches will be broadcast on ESPNU.
RailHawks U-23’s Schuler and Martinez have led a high powered UNC offense that returns to its fourth consecutive College Cup appearance. Along the way the Tar Heels defeated Coastal Carolina 3-2, No. 16 Indiana University 1-0, and St. Mary’s 2-0. Schuler and Martinez both displayed clutch play in the tournament with Martinez scoring the game winner against Coastal Carolina and Schuler registering the only goal in the Tar Heels defeat over Indiana. Schuler and Martinez led the 2011 Tar Heels in goals and assist, respectively, with 15 goals and 10 assist.
UNC-Charlotte has played the role of spoiler throughout this year’s tournament advancing to the school’s second NCAA College Cup. The biggest upset of the run came in the Quarterfinal round when the 49er’s knocked off No. 3 UCONN in a 4-2 penalty kick shootout. UNC-Charlotte also defeated Furman, No. 11 UAB, and 2010 National Champions Akron to advance to the 2011 College Cup. RailHawks U-23’s TJ Beaulieu has registered two goals in this years tournament, tallying the game winner in the first round against Furman and opening the scoring with a goal in the 49er’s upset over No. 11 UAB.
