The Orange County Soccer Club (OCSC) and the Anaheim Family YMCA announced a new one-year partnership making an impact in the Anaheim & regional communities of North Orange County through health equity and youth programming. 

As part of the collaboration, OCSC will serve as the “Official Youth Soccer Technical Partner” for the Anaheim Family YMCA’s youth soccer league, which will feature OCSC-branded YMCA youth soccer league jerseys. 

“We are thrilled to join together with the YMCA of Anaheim in this official partnership to support the Anaheim community,” OCSC President of Business Relations Jeff Garner said. “With six YMCA soccer arenas in the heart of Anaheim, this partnership will serve as an opportunity to unite and celebrate the local soccer community and recognize the unique neighborhoods that make this region the best in the country.”

The partnership also includes integrated content and branding opportunities within YMCA soccer facilities. Throughout the upcoming year, the two organizations will also work together to identify and offer a range of experiences and opportunities to grow the game of soccer while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for Anaheim’s youth.

The next two home OCSC matches of the 2022 USL Championship season are Saturday, July 9 and July 16. The first match against USL newcomers Monterey Bay FC will be held during Gnarly’s Carnival Summer Camp, an interactive carnival made for kids inside Championship Soccer Stadium. Orange County SC announced the re-signing of 2021 USL Championship title winner and midfielder Dillon Powers to a multi-year contract, pending league and federation approval. Powers, 31, returns to Orange County after a brief spell with Northern Irish side Glentoran FC in the NIFL Premiership. 

“I’m thrilled to be back in Orange County and looking forward to picking up where I left off with the squad last year,” Powers said. “I’m excited to get integrated with the group and make an impact right away.“

Having initially signed with Orange County last season from Scottish side Dundee United, Powers joined the club in mid-August and quickly became an important figure in the OCSC midfield making 18 total appearances. Much of Powers’s impact came in supporting the strongest defense in the league and his distribution of the ball to a high powered offense.

“Dillon’s signing changed our season last year and he was a fundamental asset in our run to winning the Championship trophy,” President of Soccer Operations Oliver Wyss said. “Dillon’s exceptional quality will improve our team immediately and I am sure our fans are beyond excited to have him back in Orange County.”

Known for being a workhorse on the field, Powers played every minute of OCSC’s 2021 USL Championship Playoff run which included two matches being decided by a penalty shootout. On both occasions, Powers converted his chances from the spot to propel the club to its first Western Conference trophy. In the USL Championship Final against the Tampa Bay Rowdies, Powers commanded the midfield for the full 90 minutes enroute to OCSC lifting their first USL Cup.

Powers makes his way back to the defending champions to provide stability, experience and leadership to head coach Richard Chaplow’s midfield setup for the rest of the 2022 season. Powers will rejoin the squad before OCSC’s match against Monterey Bay FC on Saturday, July 9 at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine.

The Plano, TX native was drafted 11th overall in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids out of the University of Notre Dame and made 146 appearances in five seasons. He won the 2013 MLS Rookie of the Year Award in his first professional season. He also played for Orlando City SC before heading to Scotland with Dundee United. He was a member of the USMNT U20 squad at the 2009 FIFA U20 World Cup in Egypt.

Orange County SC dropped an intense 2-1 derby decision to the San Diego Loyal SC at Torero Stadium in San Diego, CA on Wednesday, June 29. It marks OCSC’s fourth loss in their last five matches.

As expected, tensions ran high in the opening period of this Southern California derby. Colin Shutler, the reigning USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Week, was called upon early in the 11th minute and answered the bell with a strong save off an effort from Kyle Vassell.

However, it was in the 20th minute that Shutler could not stop all of a left-footed shot from Tumi Moshobane and Alejandro Guido was there to see the ball over the line, and San Diego led 1-0.

For the second straight match, an opponent’s lead lasted just two minutes. After forcing a turnover in their attacking half, OCSC pushed into the left wing and Alex Villanueva whipped in a cross that found the other OCSC member of the USL Championship Team of the Week, Milan Iloski. 

His header into the side netting in the 22nd minute left Koke Vegas no chance, and OCSC was level 1-1 on Iloski’s team leading 10th goal of the season.

Later on in the 35th minute, tensions began to boil over. Vassell and OCSC defender Ahmed Longmire exchanged pleasantries on the far sideline that led to both men wrestling on the ground and needing to be separated.

Head referee Ricardo Fierro gave them plenty of space as he sent the pair off, each with straight red cards and both sides were down to 10 men.

Shortly thereafter in the 42nd minute, Ian Hoffmann was whistled for a foul on Nick Moon in the box and the Loyal were awarded a penalty. Shutler correctly guessed to his left side, but Guido placed his penalty kick perfectly and San Diego went back in front 2-1.

The second half proved fruitless for OCSC as they tried to find an equalizer. A couple of chances went just yards too wide and the score remained the same.

OCSC heads to the desert to face Phoenix Rising FC in Arizona on Saturday, July 2 at 7:30 PM PDT. They will return home on Saturday, July 9 against Monterey Bay FC for the third Gnarly’s Carnival. Tickets can be purchased here.

Orange County SC goalkeeper Colin Shutler and forward Milan Iloski were both selected to the USL Championship Team of the Week for their performances in OCSC’s 3-1 victory over Loudoun United FC in Week 16.

For Shutler, 23, his first USL Championship start led to his first appearance in the USL Championship Team of the Week. The former University of Virginia goalkeeper recorded three saves against his former club, including a penalty save in the 52nd minute that kept OCSC level and swung momentum back in favor of the home side.

Orange County SC snapped their four game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Loudoun United FC backed by a sturdy performance by goalkeeper Colin Shutler in his first USL Championship start on Saturday, June 25 at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, CA.

While he went home with his first USL Championship win, Shutler’s night did not get off to an ideal start. Loudoun United opened the scoring in the second minute of play on a goal from Skage Simonsen that just squeaked through Shutler’s legs and over the line for a 1-0 lead.

That lead lasted two minutes. OCSC responded with a goal from Milan Iloski in the fourth minute. He connected on a pass from Korede Osundina in the middle of a box, before unleashing a powerful right-footed effort past Joe Rice to level the match one a piece.

After the fast start, each side began to settle in defensively. OCSC enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half.

Ian Hoffmann, who was signed on loan from Houston Dynamo FC this week, was a bright spot in defense. The midfielder by trade slotted in at right-back and was involved in the attack.

“I thought he [was] excellent on the ball in the first half,” OCSC assistant coach Paul Hardyman said. “Also defensively, he was pretty sound as well. A good debut from the young man.”

The opening of the second half was marked with an opportunity for Shutler to keep OCSC in the game. After appearing offside, Abdellatif Abouhara moved clean on goal and was taken down by defender Michael Orozco. The 36-year-old captain saw yellow, and Loudoun was awarded a penalty.

Sami Guediri lined up to take the penalty and Shutler felt like he got a good read on the Loudoun man.

“I can’t give away my secrets, but I will say I had an inclination that he was going to go [to my right],” Schutler said. “I made the decision early and I went for it.”

Shutler guessed correctly low and to his right, and kept OCSC level. His save shifted the momentum back in favor of the orange and black. 

After being subbed on in the 56th minute, Southern California native Ivan Gutierrez made an instant impact on offense. He sent in a cross from the left side that found the head of Erick “Cubo” Torres just outside the six-yard box to put OCSC ahead 2-1. Cubo increased his goal count to eight this season.

With a lead and 4,119 OCSC supporters behind them, the home team looked poised to earn a much needed three points when on cue they were given another obstacle to face. Daniel A. Pedersen was shown his second yellow card of the match and sent off in the 69th minute, bringing OCSC down to 10 men.

The defense was tasked with keeping a speedy Loudoun United off the board for the next twenty minutes while down a man. OCSC went from 10 men to nine men in the 83rd minute when Hoffmann went down with a lower-body injury and had to require attention on the sideline. 

“He cramped up a bit at the end, but in this heat that’s understandable,” Hardyman said. “He’ll learn from that. You know out here it is a little bit different because of the heat and the way that we want to play and our intensity.” 

Hoffman returned in the 88th minute providing the extra support in Loudoun’s desperate attacks that did not get past the OCSC backline and Shutler. Iloski sealed all three points for OCSC in the 94th minute with a rocket from outside the 18-yard box for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

OCSC looks to build on a positive result  ahead of another two-game road swing. A SoCal derby without a name against San Diego Loyal SC headlines the trip on Wednesday, June 29 while a visit to Phoenix Rising FC follows on Saturday, July 2. Orange County SC announced that midfielder Ian Hoffmann will join the club on loan from MLS side Houston Dynamo FC for the remainder of the season, pending league and federation approval. Hoffmann, 20, appeared in six matches for Houston during the 2021 MLS season. The Wilton, CT native spent the 2022 season competing for Houston Dynamo 2 in MLS Next Pro. His professional debut came with Houston’s former USL Championship affiliate Rio Grande Valley FC Toros in the shortened 2020 season.

Hoffmann joined Houston Dynamo’s setup after spending his pre-professional days in Germany within 2. Bundesliga side Karlsruher SC’s academy system. He previously competed for Bundesliga side 1. FC Köln and MLS side New York Red Bulls. In international competition, Hoffmann was called up to the US Men’s National Team U16, U18 and U20 squads. He also represented Germany at the U17 and U18 levels.

Orange County SC dropped their fourth consecutive decision to Eastern Conference leaders Louisville City by a final score of 3-1 at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, KY on Saturday, June 18.

The match kicked off at a rather slow pace, as both LouCity and OCSC spent the first fifteen minutes of the match feeling each other out.

LouCity had the first chance of the match in the 16th minute, as Enoch Mushagalusa found himself in a dangerous position on goal. The newest OCSC addition defender Ahmed Longmire, on loan from Nashville SC, recovered quickly to clear the danger.

In the 26th minute, forward Milan Iloski registered OCSC’s first shot on goal in nearly 120 minutes of play. 

Defender Albi Skendi was shown a yellow card in the 39th minute for a challenge on Brian Ownby. On the ensuing free kick, Skendi cleared the initial ball in, but the clearance fell to Mushagalusa who fired a half volley into the side netting from a tough angle, and the hosts led 1-0.

OCSC was now in need of a response, after finding themselves down in a match once again. They found that response from forward Erick “Cubo” Torres just before halftime. 

Iloski sent in a cross that fell to Torres just outside the six-yard box, Torres’ initial shot was stopped by former OCSC third string goalkeeper Danny Faundez, but Torres followed his own rebound and had a shot destined for the top corner. It was cleared off the line by Amadou Dia, but he used his hand in doing so, and OCSC were awarded their tying goal.

Goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky kept things level for OCSC in the second half with a save in close on Jorge Gonzalez in the 69th minute. 

Captain Michael Orozco was whistled for a penalty after bringing down Ownby in the box in the 73rd. Rakovsky guessed correctly, but Sean Totsch snuck his penalty by him in the lower right corner to restore LouCity’s lead at 2-1.

Just ten minutes later, a penalty was called against Longmire for a foul on Wilson Harris in the box. Harris sent Rakovsky the wrong way and LouCity extended their lead to 3-1, which is how the match ended.
