
PHOENIX (February 10, 2018) — Phoenix Rising FC announced today it has acquired defender Mike da Fonte on loan from the Major League Soccer club Colorado Rapids. The 26-year old spent the 2017 season with the Rapids appearing in 17 matches, starting 14 of those. da Fonte has previously played in the United Soccer League, suiting up with Sacramento Republic FC in 2016 and New York Red Bulls II in 2015. Including da Fonte, Phoenix Rising now has 22 players under contract for the 2018 season.
da Fonte began his professional career in 2012 in Portugal with second-division club Espinho. He appeared in 23 matches and scored a goal. He remained in Portugal the following season with Pedras Salgadas, appearing in 23 matches. da Fonte returned to the United States in 2015, playing with New York Red Bulls II, then Sacramento Republic FC, before landing with the Colorado Rapids in 2017.
The club also announced today that is has released defender Yaw Frimpong after Frimpong failed his entrance physical. In addition, John Berner is out indefinitely with an injury sustained in training.
