Sacramento Republic FC traveled to Fresno, Calif. to take on the Fresno Fuego (PDL) in the second annual Highway 99 Derby. The clubs tied 2-2 in last season’s inaugural Derby.
Fresno midfielder Milton Blanco gave the Fuego the lead in the 27th minute with a shot that found the bottom left corner of the goal off a corner kick. The home club would take a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Republic FC came out strong in the second half and appeared to have tied it on a Harry Williamsheader in the 69th minute, but the goal was immediately disallowed for offside.
It would not take long for Republic FC to atone for the mistake. In the 86th minute forward Mackenzie Pridham buried the equalizer from close range, sending the game to penalty kicks following three minutes of stoppage time.
Republic FC shot first in the shootout converting their first four PKs. The Fuego converted their first three chances before Elijah Martin’s penalty was saved by Republic FC goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek. Republic FC defender Derek Foran then stepped up and converted on his penalty to seal the 5-3 PK victory.
Republic FC continue their preseason road trip when they travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to take on the UC Santa Barbara Men’s Soccer Team on Saturday, March 5. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m. at Harder Stadium. The match is free and open to the public.
