Head Coach
At the helm of the San Jose Earthquakes is Head Coach Dominic Kinnear. One of the most successful coaches in MLS history, Kinnear is one of only two coaches in league history to win back-to-back championships, alongside current LA Galaxy coach Bruce Arena. He accomplished this feat in 2006 and 2007 as the head coach of the Houston Dynamo.
Before his coaching career, Kinnear spent 12 years as a professional soccer player and played in the inaugural MLS season in 1996 as a member of the Colorado Rapids. Prior to his arrival in MLS, Kinnear was part of Mexican First Division side Necaxa and won the Mexican Championship with the club in 1995.
Affiliations
Earlier this month, the Earthquakes and Republic FC renewed their affiliation for the 2016 USL and MLS seasons. The two teams have been affiliates since Republic FC’s inaugural season in the USL in 2014.
Throughout the last two seasons, several Earthquakes players have made their way to Republic FC on loan. During the 2014 season, four Earthquake players made appearances for Republic FC, including Sacramento-area natives Adam Jahn and Tommy Thompson. Last season, Republic FC received Thompson, Mark Sherrod and JJ Koval on loan during the last third of the season to help Republic FC secure a spot in the USL Western Conference playoffs.
The Earthquakes are also an affiliate of PDL side Burlingame Dragons FC.
Recent Transactions
During the offseason, the Earthquakes signed forward Chad Barrett, midfielder Simon Dawkins and defender Andres Imperiale. Dawkins spent the last three years playing in both the English Premier League and Championship and was signed as a Designated Player. The Jamaican international previously played for the Earthquakes for two seasons from 2011-2012 while on loan from EPL side Tottenham Hotspur.
The Quakes also acquired goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell with the eighth overall pick in the 2016 MLS Super Draft. Tarbell played four seasons of collegiate soccer at Clemson University before being drafted by the Earthquakes, making 56 appearances (55 starts) throughout his time at Clemson.
Last Match
The Earthquakes come into the match following 3-1 victory over NPSL side Sonoma County Sol in a closed-door scrimmage on Wednesday, Feb. 17. New signings Simon Dawkins and Chad Barrett helped the Earthquakes cruise to a win, with Dawkins recording two assists and Barrett slotting home the first goal. Former Republic FC loan player Jahn scored the final goal in the match, giving the Quakes a comfortable win.
2015 Season Recap
Only four points separated San Jose from playoffs after a late push towards the end of the season. The Quakes finished in seventh place in the MLS Western Conference with 47 points, missing out on the final playoff spot, which was claimed by Sporting Kansas City with 51 points.
