SACRAMENTO, Calif. (June 1, 2019) — Sam Werner’s beautifully struck effort from distance was enough for Republic FC to secure all three points in a 2-1 win over San Antonio FC on Saturday night.
The home side, debuting the newly released City Kits, dominated the bulk of opportunities in the first half, but was unable to get past a dodgy Matt Cardone who came up big on multiple occasions to preserve the goalless scoreline.
Cameron Iwasa appeared to have put Republic FC ahead in the 35th minute after tapping home a lofted ball into the box from Villyan Bijev, but the play was called offside.
Republic FC finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute after Werner whipped in a low, driven cross into the box that San Antonio’s Joshua Yaro deflected into the goal.
Werner was again involved five minutes later, receiving a ball at the top of the box, cut inside before unleashing a powerful, left-footed strike that hit the upper corner of the net. The goal was Werner’s third of the USL Championship season and his fourth across all competitions.
San Antonio pulled one back after Michael Lahoud received a corner kick at the edge of the box and fired a long-range effort that filtered through home defense and past a diving Josh Cohen.
Sacramento overcame the late San Antonio surge to secure all three points and cut a two-game winless streak. Up next for the Indomitable Club is a visit to expansion side and Western Conference leaders New Mexico United FC on Saturday, June 8.
