Republic FC enter the match after a 2-0 loss to Real Monarchs SLC on Wednesday, Sept. 27. The match was back and forth with neither team dominating the match, but the Monarchs were able to catch Republic FC off guard twice in a two-minute span early in the second half, allowing for the 2-0 victory.
Forward Trevin Caesar scored Republic FC’s lone goal against Phoenix on Aug. 26. Caesar followed an Agustin Cazarez shot perfectly, tapping in the rebound to net his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Caesar still leads the club in scoring and has also recorded three assists on the season, proving to be a difference maker at the top .
Defender James Kiffe started his 35th consecutive USL match for Republic FC against the Monarchs, tying him with Danny Barrera for the longest such streak in Republic FC history. Kiffe has been one of Republic FC’s most consistent players and as such has been the only Republic FC player to start every USL match this season. He can match his career high for most appearances in a season with an appearance against Phoenix.
Phoenix Rising FC come as the hottest team in the USL, having won their last five consecutive matches. Phoenix have outscored their opponents 11-1 during the streak and currently hold a 367 minute shutout streak dating back to their 2-1 victory over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Sept. 9.
Jason Johnson has been on a roll lately, scoring three goals in his last four appearances and now leading the club with 10 goals on the season. Johnson has also been a distributer, recording three assists, tied for third on the club. The forward joined Phoenix after scoring three goals in 27 appearances for San Antonio FC last season.
